Hi there I think the battery's you have are under power for the c5 most of us use leisure battery's of about 85 Ah
And will give you a lot more distance ....

The original standard Sinclair leaisure batteries were about 36ah , so 12ah might be too low as Chas says.

To me 12Ah sounds a little low. The original batteries as Karl said were 36Ah and the motors were rated at 33Ah. So with 12Ah you would trudle along very slowly.

Hello,

Sorry I have forgotten to say that I have 2 batteries in parallel to get 12 and 24Ah.

I think I do not need so much capacity for my 4km, so I thought about this possibility to take 12V-12Ah batteries.

My today ride was with the "original" 44Ah battery but they seams to be bad, old or... the voltage goes under load down from 13V to10-9V.

I will try this 12V-24Ah with bigger cables while today in a test without load (my weight) the 2,5mm2 was a little bit warm.

I will keep you informant how it will work.

Best regaras.

I still don't think that 24Ah will be enough. But let us know how you get on.

I think they should be OK as your not going very far and you have 2 in parallel. Good datasheet on the battery here but its in english

Looks like they are designed to withstand some abuse.

These batteries are used in burgular and fire alarm panels. They don't have the Current drain capacity.

Yep they are standby batteries designed for constant trickle charging.  The Ah rating does not govern power output, only storage capacity incidentally

Hello to All,

Yes it seems that the “original” Car – Battery form Varta isn’t good!
In my last trip I haven’t had motor after a going up in a underbridge.
Witch type and model of Battery you are using and you would suggest?
In this moment the goal for the battery is 4 times a day 4km in flat terrain.

I can charge the battery about 12 in the night, and I am thinking to put a 10W-Solarpanel (about 0.6A) on the C5 to charge a little while parking here in the sun
Is there anyone how have made Solar-charging systems on the C5?.

Best regards.

These are similar deep discharge batteries that Sinclair used on the Zeta bike motors, they were the 7Ah sized ones and  only gave about 2 miles range, so going on that these might only give you about 6 or so miles range, (about 10 km).

But the C5 is much heavier than a bike, so your range may be less.

I use an 85 Ah leisure battery and get about 17 miles range on a full charge (27 km).

Charging the battery with a 10W Solar panel should be possible if you connect up directly to the battery using a 1A blocking diode to stop any surges from the circuit when switching on the motor damaging the Solar cell. It'll take a while to charge up the battery though, 24Ah would take 40 hours in full sunlight for a full charge with your 10W cell.

Cheers John

I'm currently running the original keyswitch assembly with a Yuasa 038 battery. It is very similar to the original Sinclair ones and I get about 13 miles out of one battery on a full charge. Thoroughly recommended!

Hello all.

So here Today I have my “first” real ride to the work(4km) with this batterys.
I put you’re the Power, Voltage and Ampere measurements graphic.

Like you can see from the begging of the 13,5V they are gonging down to about 12V while working and the amperes going by start up to 40-60A(PEAK) to normal consumption off about 20A.
The data was logged with a Data logger system for RC-model (can measure up to 60V with 100A).

If all will fit I will do more measurements and also include a temperature and revolution sensor.

Best regards.

Hi,

Sorry I'm a little late to this (and all posts lol) but just to add I have 2x 65AH YUASA Sealed Gell batteries, one I convertet to posts for the Quick Release Kit, the other I converted to the Sinclair Ignition Block.  Both batteries are ACE, very heavy and only just fit.  I'm not sure how big or heavy a 85AH YUASA would be.

I get a good 20 miles with one but they take 2 days to trickle charge - lol

Umpa - are they staring to "fade" now ? The ones fitted to "challenger" seem to be struggling a little now...but then they are getting on a bit age wise !
