Title: April 19th 2009 LONDON CALLING ! Sightseeing run
Post by: Karl on 03, January, 2009 - 20:54:53
Remember Blablublablablububs suggestion about photographing C5's in front of landmark buildings ?
http://c5alive.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=64.0

This meeting should help provide some scenic photo opportunities  ;)

Starting at Clapham Common (Windmill Drive) we will use the bike paths to take us through the common, then use the local roads to Chelsea Bridge. We can stop by the bridge for a tea break before heading up to Sloane Square, and the posh retail area of Sloane Street etc. We can also include the famous Harrods, Victoria & Albert Museum, National History Museum, Science Museum and Royal Albert Hall in our sightseeing tour.

The idea is to finish the run at the Royal Albert Hall to change batteries etc, then go for a look around Hyde Park.

More details to follow nearer the time, but this should be a really good run - nice and flat apart from a big downhill bit at the beginning.

(Re :  our phone last week about filming London calling 19th april 2009)
Hi Karl
I would just like to confirm with you that we would like to film a few parts of your journey in London with the c5 club. We will be filming our 4 c5s round London for the whole weekend and possibly the weekend after if we don’t capture enough of the right shots.

We are aiming to make a small video about Sir Clive and his Sinclair c5 story but in the way as if it was a huge success, showing how green it was, how original it was and how it would have looked if c5s were around everywhere in London.

We plan to use computer graphics and effects to clone c5s in as if they were everywhere but need real ones for the main shots. We are making a computer model of the c5 at this stage. It would be so much better and effective if we could capture a group real c5s in one go as an added bonus.

We will be doing Piccadilly and it is a great shame that it isn’t in your route but we can get round that with our 4 Sinclair c5s and our team.
Looking at your route it would be good if we could capture some shots these 3 places.

1.   Chelsea bridge with Battersea power station in the back ground
2.   Harrods
3.    Buckingham palace/Hyde park.

If any of members of the c5 convoy aren’t sure about doing this it wouldn’t be a problem and could even look good if we film some C5s that were parked up.

If  fellow club members are interested please let me know and pass on any comments or suggestions as we would be very grateful

Many thanks

Sinclair mat

You're quite right to be concerned about leaving a trailer unattended in London... :-X

There are a couple of options you might want to consider ;

- you could come stay at my place the night before and leave your trailer in my garage , or come down really early on the day ,& we can take your C5 in the bus we used at Shoreham

- I'll bring along a couple of my motorbike padlock&chains and chain the trailer to your car

The intention is to meet at Clapham Common around 9am to unload the c5's(leaving someone to keep an eye on them ) and then drive all the cars to the finish point near the Albert Hall. We can then use my MPV to ferry everyone back to the c5's at the start point. My MPV is going to be driven by "whitevanman" (Phil) to act as a support car.  The aim is to give people the option of finishing the run at the Albert Hall and going home, or carrying on and exploring Hyde Park etc. This means everyone can vary how long the run takes to fit in with journey times etc.

I'll put some more route details etc up a little later on.

Karl

Guess what its me!!!  My C5 still seems to be working and I am interested in the London run.
What is the situation of the parking around the Albert Hall?

I am in London the week before but without the C5, so I will have to nip back to Cornwall Sat eve and get back in time for a 9am start at Clapham Common.

Will confirm with you nearer the time.

Bye for now

Paul

Do you have room for another c5 in your bus?

I'll double check with Steve that the big bus is available and then do a count up of how many C5's are going to be squeezed in  ;)

I'm sure we can get something sorted, don't worry  8)

I've checked with Steve and, as certain as it can be, the big bus is available for this run.

The big bus can hold four C5's ,which will be the following ;

Steve's
"Dave"
Ray's
Umpa's

Ray/Umpa - you can leave your trailers at my place, are you still driving yourselves to Clapham Common or do you want to catch a lift in the bus ?

My MPV will be used as a support vehicle by "Whitevanman" Phil ,with "Elmo" as co-pilot. Paul Bunce will remember this motley crew from the London-Brighton run....

A quick check of those I think will be attending ;

Angie
Me
Steve
Kurt ?
Ray
Paul Bunce
Keith (using "Dave")
Umpa
Lee B
Alan 1310 ?

plus Matt and his crew (see earlier filming post)

If we all make it it will be quite a crowd  8)

If there is room I could do with a lift in the bus, Julia (the boss) is taking Mark (son) to the science Museum so a lift from your house would be great.

If I can leave the trailer at your place, one c5 could come in the bus and I will take the other in the car.
Trevor Bunce will be with me.Or if the car parking in london is not to bad,I will leave the trailer with the car?
Looking forward to the day.

Daft question where do you leave your cars?

...usually at the start point, which is normally the finish point as well. But for this run we are being different. The cars will be left somewhere near the finish point close to the Royal Albert Hall.

and how will the c5s get to the start lol

..mate you are clearly struggling with this (and it is explained in my earlier post) ::),  you should ease off the fizzy stuff before typing ;D

1) We drive our cars to the start point and unload our C5s.

2) The c5's are left at the start point, with someone keeping an eye on them, and we drive our cars to the finish point.

3) We park our cars at the finish point and get driven back to the start point, using my mpv, to commence the run.

The point of this is to allow those with longer journeys the chance to leave a bit earlier if they want to once we finish at the Royal Albert Hall. For those that want to carry on, there is the option of exploring Hyde Park etc.We can go off individually or as a group - whatever we want.

Makes things a bit more flexible, especially for those who are travelling such a long way. 8)

Looking forward to this run :)

We are all getting ready for the London calling with 6 or maybe 7 sinclair c5s now and we are hoping for a good day. With others from the c5 Forum it should turn out to be a spectacular day for filming.

As for the man who wants to come naked....well I guess its ok as every body will be mesmerized looking at all these c5s..it will be a 1st for many to see as London now is so cosmopolitan..

Please if possible could people bring a couple of different colored tops as we want it to look random...maybe a hat or some specs will help make it look as if c5s are everywhere around London.

As for our bunch we have a clive sinclair lookalike and hes wearing as suit for that added bonus and will also change tops or hats etc.. for some shots

It will be a great day and cant wait...

speak soon

matt

I've checked the parking situation and it is good news :).

The gent at the Chelsea & Kensington "parking advice line" confirmed that on a Sunday there are no restrictions in force around the area we intend to use. Even residents bays are up for grabs apparently, but I wouldn't recommend it  :o

It's good to see Matt and his group tagging along, filming as they go. How far involved you get with Matts project is up to each individual though - there is no pressure to join in.

Post by: Karl on 10, April, 2009 - 16:23:49
Since I no longer pass through the area we will be using, Ive checked the route to make sure everything was as I remembered it  :)

There are some road works near Knightsbridge, but nothing that would cause us to make a detour.

For those that want to follow it on a map, here is the route ;

Start at : The Avenue(A205) at the junction with Windmill Drive,SW4

Use the bicycle lane through Clapham Common to Cedars Road (A3126)

Follow Cedars Rd into Queenstown Rd and all the way through to Chelsea Bridge

Cross Chelsea Bridge onto Chelsea Bridge Road, leading onto Lower Sloane St

into Sloane Square, then Sloane Street ,along to Knightsbridge then left into

Brompton Road (A4) then along into Exhibition Rd, finishing at Kensington Gore (Royal Albert Hall)

The start point ;

The best postcode I can find to help those with sat-nav is:
SW4 9DE

Please note, according to the AA Route Planner this post code will get you to Windmill Drive - BUT THE WRONG END

Meet at the Snack Wagon in Windmill Drive,SW4  next to "Mount Pond" . Try to be there no later than 10am. I would like us to be rolling along in our C5's by 1030 , which doesn't give us much time to ferry the cars to the finish point. I've delayed the start time as much as I can to help those travelling from further away. But if we leave it too late the congestion might be a problem later in the day.

The finish point ;

As you can see, parking on the yellow lines near the Royal Albert Hall is permitted, but can get busy - so we will need to get there fairly early to grab some parking spaces.

Once we finish at The Royal Albert Hall, those that want to are then free to wander about Hyde Park etc .

Ray / Umpa - I'm working on a plan to try and save you a return journey to my place. Give me a call or email me  8)

This isnt the longest run we've done as far as distance goes, but I anticipate lots of stops for taking pictures etc as we pass Chelsea Bridge,Sloane Square,  Harrods ,Science Museum etc.

Karl, if I follow my sat nav and end at the wrong end, can I drive down this clapham common (windmill drive) to reach you or is it a one way job ?

Sorry for being thick but I have never been before.

Umpa - not a problem mate , the road is "two way" & you should be able to follow your nose by the smell of the bacon butties from the snack van  ;D

Its usually well visited by Ambulance, Police and Fire crews so you should be ok..

Kurt - sorry to hear you can't make it  :-[ , maybe see you at the next one  ;)

Just so we know whether to hang around for any late arrivals tomorrow , it might be useful if those that are coming can let me know on here .

The "list" so far ;

Umpa
Steve
Me
Angie
"Eric"
Ray
Trev
Lee

Any others ?

Got back a little while ago, I didnt stay in london long after the c5s all went on their merry way!

Was great to meet all those news faces, what a friendly bunch you all are! It became rather obvious straight away that a C5 wasnt going in my car (well, to be fair it was always pretty doubtful), so I'll be on the lookout now for a cheap van / estate to do runs / meets.

Hopefully see you all at brooklands, maybe even with a C5 myself!

Nice to meet you Mike , fingers crossed you manage to get yourself sorted with a C5 in time for the next one  ;)

Todays run was eventful  ;D, with the odd bit of drama but a really fab day.

Great to meet up with Umpa, Lee , Ray & Trevor - top respect for travelling so far in order to get your fix of C5 fun  8)

I was blown away when Matt and his crew met up with us in Queenstown , not something we normally see on our C5 runs , another group of C5's out and about  :D

Shame "London" wasn't a bit more welcoming regarding Matt's filming project - I never knew that you needed a permit for filming if your camera exceeded a certain size  ???

The only other snags were the front wheel bearings collapsing on Trevors borrowed C5 and Voodoo's gearbox started grumbling at the top of Hyde Park.  Voodoo is still running, but I'm going to dismantle it tomorrow and see what the damage is  :-\

The weather was fab, my arms and face feel a bit sunburnt  ::) , but it's all good - another fab run  8)

Hi Gang,

Here's the video of the London sightseeing run.  Sorry it took so long but I have had loads of problems with this one, from the editing program autosaving the wrong video over the finished film - so I had to redo it from scratch - to youtube not linking the music and me having to redo it a second time.

I have to be honest I don't like this video - so i have done a version I am happy with and will upload it to a bittorrent site should anyone like to download the full youtube unfriendly version.

Try and enyoy !

Regards

Ian

I think the film was great, far better than my recordings, hearing Karl's laugh and voodoo horn made me chuckle.

(Re :  our phone last week about filming London calling 19th april 2009)
Hi Karl
I would just like to confirm with you that we would like to film a few parts of your journey in London (http://www.123world.com/london/) with the c5 club. We will be filming our 4 c5s round London (http://www.123world.com/london/) for the whole weekend and possibly the weekend after if we don’t capture enough of the right shots.

This sounds very interesting!

Jeez I thought I had them all done  :-\

if anyone finds any more broken links - let me know and I'll fix them.  Its all because I created albums in photobucket (to many hobbies) and needed some structure to chaos...
