Writing a book...
« on: 14, July, 2013 - 15:02:11 »
Well, somebody had to try it. I've just started writing a book about the C5... it's going to be part the story behind it and part a restorer's handbook. It won't be available to buy in print, but I'm just intending it to be an ebook at the moment. Anyway! There's a section that I'm stuck on, which is the launch. Yep, 10th January 1985 Ally Pally, but does anyone know any of the details about what happened at the launch? If people had a sneak preview or if it was a big unveiling? What actually happened at the launch?

Any details anyone knows would be appreciated  ;D

I have a friend who went to the launch. I can grille him about it if you like.

He went with his wife who was a researcher for environmental issues relating to cars at the time

They were given a pack which contained lots of info in.

What questions do you need answering and I will ask him. Not sure he will remember every detail but I can try.

Wow that's incredible!! Well really I'm just interested in what happened. Was there a buzz? Was there a silence and then Sir C started talking before unveiling it? What was the crowd's impression etc? Pretty much anything you can find out would be hugely appreciated :-)

Cheers Marty, actually I'd seen that before. In terms of the launch though, obviously we all know the date but I'm wondering if any of the invited people actually had any idea what they were about to see or if  sneak previews were in fact given. I'm trying to imagine what it would have been like on the day itself, if everyone was chatting wondering what to expect, if a cheer or silence filled the room... you get the jist  ;) Hope the MGF's going well by the way!

I think shocked silence is the more likely answer. It immediately attracted unfavourable comments

Actually you,rd exactly right, I found a run down of the launch that goes into some great detail and it describes it as a 'solemn atmosphere' lol!

Incidentally I'm up to 60 pages already, although about 15 are just illustrations. It keeps me busy while she's watching her soaps lol! It's the definitive history of the history, as well as loads of documents too so will be a restorers companion.
