New member looking for his 1st starter C5
« on: 15, July, 2011 - 20:55:16 »
Hi All

Neil Jones here a 37 year old fashion & retail professional living in SE London & very much looking for his 1st Sinclair C5. I'm originally from Merthyr Tydfil where the C5 was famously made, however Merthyr being very, very hilly & me being aged 11 the year of it's production I missed out on ownership....Alas.

I've now got a Copen (tiny two seater micro roadster) & cycle around London on a Brompton, but on a visit to Fulbourn, to spend time with my good friend Maria, I spied a teenaged lad with his own C5 which really renewed my interest in the vehicle. Keen to meet and socialize with like minded folk.

I used to have a Daihatsu Mira Classic with a 659cc turbo engine :)

Wonder did that engine go into the original Copen?

Hey thanks for getting back to me.
I'm not familiar with the Mira but think that 659cc Turbo engine may have furnished the 1st copen's? Mine's the later model which now has a 1300cc engine & is looking for a C5 London stable mate.

I think the Copen 659cc was a 4 cylinder. The 1.3 is related to the same engine in our YRV.

Hi Neil and welcome to c5alive  :)

You may recognise the area in these pictures  ;D;

...taken from our run in April 2008 !

Before parting with any of your hard earnt cash I'd advise a read of the buyers guide;

and a browse through the Forum Guide is always worthwhile;

..also, I will be placing one of my c5's up for sale very soon so might be worth you coming over to take a look. This c5 was recently used on the Zutphen run so you know it works ok  8). I just need to put a new chain tensioner clip on it and it will be ready to go.

Welcome to the forum, Neil  ;D

You've found the best place on the net for C5 information and support. There are a steady trickle of C5s which come up for sale both here and also on eBay. Price tends to reflect condition / completeness and as a rule of thumb if you buy an old wreck to restore then it will probably cost you more than buying a decent one to start with. I learnt that the hard way  ;)

C.

P.S. I have a mate at work who has a Copen. Cool car, and quite a rare sight on the road!

Hi Karl

Your C5 looks in really good condition & your based in Crawley (right?) which is very easy to access from Rotherhithe.

Being a Newbie I'm not expecting something from the 80's to be perfect & I'm not totally useless at the odd DIY task, so I'm undaunted by a little work and upkeep.
As the battery is not included, I wonder (and forgive my ignorance here) are they something which you can come by with ease? Are they a standard battery type that I can obtain from a halfords or is this a specialist item?

Also as I only have a tiny copen, which is incapable carrying a C5 home, I've cheekily sent it's dimensions to the family & asked if I find a suitable C5 can they assist me with possible collection, & as they've got a Volvo C30 & a Mitsubishi Outlander LPG they aren't the most spacious of carriers. Still having done some research and test drive I'm sure I can just hire a small van.

Cheers Neil

Neil - Yes, I am in Crawley not a million miles from you so delivery would be an easy option if necessary.

This c5 has a c5alive wiring kit already fitted so it will accept any round post 12v car or leisure battery that fits in the allocated space. Type 063 and type 065 batteries seem to be favourites at the moment and these can be obtained from any motorists centre (Kwik Fit / Halfords / Europarts etc etc). Check the "Tried & Tested" section for user views on various batteries tried ;

Hi Neil,

Welcome to the forum and good luck with your search for a C5. I would also agree with some of the other guys info in that it can sometimes cost you a lot more to fully restore that some you can pickup already done.

..but surely the pain / sweat / tears / frustration bonding process of restoring your very own c5 are priceless memories ?  ;D :D

Well I guess restoration isn't for everyone but it's the part I enjoy most. I have to reluctantly admit that I find my bicycle far easier and more practical for zipping around on than my C5 but buying and restoring a C5 is something I'm really happy to have done. It's been such a talking point for everyone who's seen it and I'm always chatting to people and answering their questions whenever I take it out.

Hi Chris I thought you had to sell yours or have you managed to keep it - good if you have.

Yes I agree Karl that doing them up after stripping them down to their bare bones is a great feeling but not for all if you are not that way minded or if financial restrictions apply.

Hi Lance,
Well it's still technically up for sale although I'm not exactly advertising it like crazy. A couple of people are interested but at the end of the day if it doesn't sell then I'll be more than happy to hang on to it (don't tell the wife though  ;))
I pulled it out of my shed the other day, pumped up the tyres and gave the body a bit of a wash down. Then I had a little pedal up and down the road and wanted to sell it even less!

It's a dilemma...
