Cheers Chas :)

Some photos from the motor and gearbox rebuild. Still waiting on the gearbox bearings before I can fit it. It runs though!

Today I got the motor fitted along with my new drive wheel and did all the wiring. Hooked up a fresh battery but unfortunately it looks like i need a new motor :(

Although the internals cleaned up ok it looks like it was past a repair worthy stage. It works in the sense that it will turn the wheels with no load but there is no oomph to it once in it and on the road. I have a spare stator to try but I might be on the look out for a good used unit. There is one on eBay for £40 + £10 p+p but the guy does not have a very good feedback rating.

Getting there though :)

New stator in, same issue. I put in one of the old brushes as it has a much larger brush braid and that seemed to up the torque, so maybe it is the new brushes with the tiny connecting braid which cant supply enough current. Want to try some new brushes but people are suggesting so many different part numbers (including the crap ones that i have already) that i don't know what to order up  ???

  • You don't have to be mad to own a C5, but it helps

Hi,

have you checked to see if the magnets are still secure? There is one other possibility, maybe the magnets have lost their oomph.

Cheers for the quick replies, the internals are good as i have rebuilt the motor twice now with two different stators incase that was the issue. The magnets are secure and in good condition. Here are the new brushes vs the old one (which i only have 1 of annoyingly)

Hi,

I don't know what you have for a hookup with the electrical system, but your problem could well be in the system and not in the motor.

Check in this order.

If you are using the original key lock switch they are known to be a problem area.
Loose connections, check that every thing is tight. This includes the connections in the control box.
Bad battery, try another battery. If your battery is run down and on it's last legs, this could be the problem.
Bad contacts in the relay, if you have a multimeter check the resistance across the contacts, it should indicate zero or very low resistance. If you don't have a multimeter try and connecting the motor directly to the battery, you need some form of switch, a hefty one not a micro switch, to control the power and cut it when not needed.

Check it out, you have nothing to lose.

Hi Karl,

Cheers for that but the electrical system is all new as the entire original loom was missing when i got it. I just have it running straight from the battery through a 70amp fuse.

Cheers chas, I think next thing on the list will be getting the brakes sorted / upgraded. The rear has been fully stripped, cleaned and adjusted but is still terrible. I think a disc conversion will be on the cards
