Gear box

What advantage is having a gear box on a C5 There is one on the Chas section

http://c5alive.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,1071.0.html

It dose not look much for £70

It is probably all the work that goes into making it

Hi Luke - all C5 have gearboxes on the end of the motor - The item Chas sells is a replacement cog for the part of the gearbox that suffers from wear  :) :)

  • You don't have to be mad to own a C5, but it helps

And is almost impossible to find a spare if the original is damaged. So it's a toss up between the high cost of an almost indestructible item against the high cost of a replacement GB, which of couse will end up having the same problems as the original box.

It's not the cost of the material or the cost of machining, it's the cost of the work that has to be put in to be able to produce the part. If Chas had ordered 100 pieces the cost would be a lot lower, but could he find a 100 customers? I think not. Not only that to order 100 pieces the outlay would be incredible. I for one would not be prepared to take the risk and lay out that kind of bread.

If 100,000 pieces were ordered for china the cost would be around a fiver, but again what in the hell are you going to do with all that unsold stock?

Hi there luke .
Regarding the cost of the gearbox if your teeth are worn out on the motor the belt slips so what can you do ...You could tighten the belt ok but that puts a strain on the motor and you could end up snapping  the small bearings on the end of the shaft making the motor useless ..
Then you would have to buy a new motor ...
There will come a time when there are no motors/gearboxes left for the C5 then what can you do ..
Just  check out the items I have made and sold for the c5 as I am always trying to make the items to keep the C5 running ...

Some of the items are ;Gearbox insert ....bearings/ pod washers/ Hi viz masts + rubbers/ mud flaps/ center wheel caps/ ball joints for the steering/ New s/steel washers/ top hats for the back bar/stickers/ 1/2 link for the chain/ thin cotter pins for the chain/ chain tension er /
Clips to hold the brake cables in place / frame clips that hold the control box in place / keys for the key switch + lock / Cables/ switchers / front brake calipers / wiring harness / pod wiring cable / battery straps / large drive cogs / hazard flashers / mirror brackets / 3 speed gears / Back and front brake disc + caliper + front metal wheel/ Small gear box cogs and the metal posts / and different size motors/ Gearbox pullers / C5 stand /  Boot insert / and still doing the same ....at the moment I am having a go at making a c5 tool box...

regarding the items for sale on the site that Karl lets me use they are for all if you want them ....
