Like it or not? What do you think of it?

Very nice !!

I've always had a soft spot for Jags but never got round to owning one.
Managed to run a Mercedes 300ce for a few years, now that was a lovely motor.
-
A really nice car, can't knock them for comfort.

Fantastic Jag bud kind of thing I am planning on getting !

The poor old thing has been off the road for over a year now, but its still managed to keep me busy. Currently doing a top-end rebuild on it after the headgasket went...

..just a little more complex than a c5 motor rebuild ;D
Scarily complicated !

You are seem to be able to tackle some big jobs for someone your age, you must have a very keen interest in mechanic's/electric's etc, you will go far mate.

Fantastic Stuff - I recall working on a mark 3 cortina around about your age - but being an simple 1600 ohv engine I had easy compared to that beast of an engine - Keep up the good work bud :) :)
-
Looks like you have your hands full, so a C5 should be simple stuff.
Keep us posted

Started putting it back together today. Got my assistant to help me get the head back on, and I managed to get the cam sprockets, chain, tensioner and distributor back in today.

I got it back together and running on Monday the 24th October but he developed a leak from the chain tensioner. I got the distributor out to get to the bolts for it, undid them only to find that it had snapped :o. After this followed a two week wait for replacement tensioner which arrived along with some Instant Gasket yesterday. I got it fitted today and I can safely say that Oliver is now properly fixed!
I was a little nervous at first because there was smoke coming out from the exhaust manifold area at first but I had a look and it turned out to just be some oil left over on the manifold from when the tensioner let go, but I got him up to temperature and he stayed at a steady 90 degrees. I drove him up and down the close a couple of times and the power steering has come back, but the brake pedal has a little more travel than I remember it to. Sadly no pictures or videos from today because it had got dark by the time I got it running.
Edited to add pictures;

Fantastic job on a great british car.

Gave the old beast a service today and began spray painting some areas that needed attention. Some pictures are on my blog; http://projectxj40.weebly.com/blog.html

Looks superb mate 8)

Very tidy Jag bud - would love something similar :)

What are you going to do with it for 3-4 years before you can drive it and then there the insurance, you will need +£3k just for that.

I've got 3 years to go till I'm 17, and insurance then will be around £2k for the first year. I know some guys who are insured on 1.0 Saxos for more than £2k.
I have spoken to the parents and they said they will pay half of whatever the insurance is going to cost on the Jag when I'm 17.

Did some more painting today, only the end result wasn't anywhere near the one from a couple of days ago. :(

I'm no expert when it comes to painting but the cause of the poor finish you describe may have been because recently it was too hot for spray painting. You'll probably find the spray can says the temperature has to be above 10 degrees but they seldom show a maximum operating temperature. Some paint sprayer friends say if its too hot then the paint dries too quickly and wont flow properly.

I think it was too hot and the paint dried before reaching the surface

try rubbing the area gently with a meths soaked rag, it may take the bloom off : that's what I used to when only a little older than you and rattlecan spraying over old bangers for resale so they didn't look newly sprayed to fund my own car owning habit whilst at university.
-
At least you have a Jag, and at your age. My first car was at 17 , all be it a 1967 mini cooper. £430 third party insurance, about 1990 I think ::) was allot of doe at the time fella. you have a good cruzer .
-
My first was a Ford Escort I bought from some Gypsies for £50. Failed the MOT cos the chassis was rusted through. Dumped it outside their place with a note on saying they can have the V5 back if they give me £50 back... they did ;D
-
Mine was a 2 litre mark 3 cortina - cost £300 to buy and £150 third party insurance - had it resprayed red - looked awsome with the matching red cortina graphics across the back window - wire mesh and isapon were the order of the day !
-
Mine was a Austin Allegro 1.3 series 3, had some great fun with it :)
Retro Andy.
-
Mine was a £30 Ford Prefect 100E. Soon had the head skimmed and other tuning mods but it didn't negate the design defects.Sold for £60 and moved on to a 105E van which eventually received a dry sumped 997cc screamer complete with hole in bonnet for downdraught Weber.
-
Mine too was a an allegro. an old R reg 1.5 5 speed beast! Comfiest seats ever.
Insurance was £1500 in 1992... about 5 times the cars value!
Strangely the car is worth more now than then... :(
-
My first was a Ford Escort, classic 90's car ;D
The lights had a mind of their own ... sometimes they'd all work, sometimes you'd only get full beam, sometimes nothing ..... it made driving at night entertaining.
The thing i'll always remember about it though, is that while taking a slow drive through Woburn Safari Park, i spun it in the lion enclosure, but luckily kept it on the road part ;D And shortly after that little incident, Woburn put a speed bump in on that particular corner.
The jag looks good though, and hopefully as you said, in a few years time, the insurance might have come down a bit for young drivers.
Although it's not just new drivers that get crazy prices. I've had classic cars for years - so classic car insurance, which means no no claims built up. When i was looking to get a 'new' car, even some of the quotes for a 1996 998cc Fiat Cinquecento were coming in at over £1000, and i'm 35 :o

I had a go at some more spraying today, a little bit more around the rear screen and I re-did the bit I did last time.

It turned out a hell of a lot better than last time. Need to order more paint now...

You've done really well to get it this far, and there's still the c70 and c5 to keep you amused 8)

I've finally had the car dropped back off at lunchtime today. It seems that the drive to and from the garage has done it some good at least as the ABS light is no longer on and the ABS works! I had to jump start it off my Sinclair as the battery was only at a little under 3V when the car arrived here and I'm not sure if it will still hold a charge. Although when I plugged it into the charger for 20 mins, disconnected it and the voltage seemed to have shot up to just over 11V I left it disconnected for an hour and the voltage didn't drop so I have left it to charge overnight and fingers crossed it should be alright.

Just hope no one was watching when you did the jump start. "Hi Jim you'll never belive what I saw today, ....." 8)

Should have taken a picture, shouldn't I ;D

I gave it a wash yesterday and today I reinstalled the recharged battery (which seems to hold it's charge well) and fitted screw covers on the front number plate.

And for the first time in a long while - no Anti-Lock failure message on the dashboard;

Does it saying 11 mpg on the display in the last picture ?
Retro Andy.
-
Na, thats 1.1 mpg.
-
Na, thats 1.1 mpg.
Yup. Takes a lot of effort to achieve that. ;)
-
I would love a car like that when I am 17 but i doubt I'll get one like that :(
-
I bought another pack of spray cans for the car a few months ago and I could finally be bothered to start finishing the painting on the car. The A pillar has been in primer for a little while so I got that painted today, just have the rear screen surround to finish off before I can ask my mechanic to come and take it away for welding and whatever else it will need.
Like all my rattle can jobs, it looks immaculate if you look at it from a distance. ;)

Nice write-up and a lovely car :) I have regular urges for an XJ-S, but so far I have managed to keep them under control :D
