Title: New C5 owner - Lots of questions
Post by: aceofhearts on 03, October, 2014 - 17:21:19
Hi everyone,

Very excited new C5 owner here from Bedfordshire. I have recently bought a cheap project C5 and am wondering which direction to take it in.   There are a lot of parts missing (all of the electrics apart from 2 x Pods and a motor) and the motor seems to have been modified onto a different bracket on the rear of the chassis. The rear brake seems to work and it has come with a lot of good (rare) spares, but the lack of wiring and modifications worry me.

I am not sure whether it is best to continue with this one, which will need a new motor, modifications undoing, an entire wiring loom and control box (not sure where to get these from or how much they cost) or to break this one for spares which I am sure will make me a bit of money to put towards a better one.

Main thing though is to give it a good clean up, some new inner tubes which will make it ready to peddle :)

Thanks Martin,

Where are you in Bedfordshire? I am in Biggleswade, would be good to have a look round some other C5's and find out what i am missing :)

I will give it a good clean up and get some photos on here this weekend

Let me know when you are going to be in the area and you will have to pop in :)

In other C5 news I got some inner tubes from Halfords, fitted them, and went for my first ride (cycle).

Really good fun, but the C5 still looks a heap as I haven't really cleaned it yet (a quick go over with a bucket and sponge). My neighbour looked at me as if i was a nutter.

I had a look online last night and due to the rarity of the Sinclair wiring and electronics, i think i might fit a front hub mounted motor and controller or something like this:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/171269213635?_trksid=p2060778.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

Does anybody know what sort of speed and range I can expect with a 24V 250w hub motor?

Here is a picture from today and from when I first got it home:

Ah, see you found this place   :D

The others on here know far more than I do but I look forward to seeing how you get on with it.

Good luck!

Cheers guys,

First real question is what to do with the motor. I found out that the one bolted onto the home made bracket it actually the standard motor, but the gearbox has been removed, the white 'fingers' sawn off by the looks of it and a v-belt pulley put on the end. There is also a fan bolted to the back which I don't think is original.

Also it looks like the belt pulley on the rear wheel has been sheared off so i will need a new one of those, and the motor clamp has been snapped in two as well. Anyone got a whole rear axle for sale? lol

I will put up some pictures tomorrow of what is going on with it. Looks like most will need to be ripped out and quite a few new bits bought.

Hi Guys, got a question for you all :)

I have got the final bits ordered up to assemble the drive side, but i cannot see how the plastic drive gear sends drive to the axle (as it has a bearing in the centre of it?

The only other thing i can imagine is that it drives the wheel directly but i cannot see how it connects to the wheel?

Can anyone help? The wheel has a metal plate on it that buts up to the drive cog

Hi Chas,

That looks like what i have apart from I am missing the thin washer between the motor holder and the drive gear.

So what stops the drive gear from spinning on the sleeve, is it clamped by the wheel?

I will send my number now if it is easier over the phone

Hi the bearing inside the large drive cog is a one way bearing if you put the sleeve in and turn it will only go one way freely and the other way it locks to turn the bearing
Regarding the washers you must have them if not the large cog could go to far on to the motor support and wear out and on the other side of the larg cog there must be 1or 2 washers if not the alloy plate on the wheel could move and come off and grind off the the pins on the wheel making it useless

And here is the main C5 almost ready for motor fitment. The welded in cross brace i will get rid off next year as i will do a full body off resto in the summer.

Today I got the motor fitted along with my new drive wheel and did all the wiring. Hooked up a fresh battery but unfortunately it looks like i need a new motor :(

Although the internals cleaned up ok it looks like it was past a repair worthy stage. It works in the sense that it will turn the wheels with no load but there is no oomph to it once in it and on the road. I have a spare stator to try but I might be on the look out for a good used unit. There is one on eBay for £40 + £10 p+p but the guy does not have a very good feedback rating.

Getting there though :)

New stator in, same issue. I put in one of the old brushes as it has a much larger brush braid and that seemed to up the torque, so maybe it is the new brushes with the tiny connecting braid which cant supply enough current. Want to try some new brushes but people are suggesting so many different part numbers (including the crap ones that i have already) that i don't know what to order up  ???

Hi,

have you checked to see if the magnets are still secure? There is one other possibility, maybe the magnets have lost their oomph.

Hi just sent you an email
Like I said if you have used the brushers that are made for a  washer I have found that they are no good ..

Cheers for the quick replies, the internals are good as i have rebuilt the motor twice now with two different stators incase that was the issue. The magnets are secure and in good condition. Here are the new brushes vs the old one (which i only have 1 of annoyingly)

Hi,

I don't know what you have for a hookup with the electrical system, but your problem could well be in the system and not in the motor.

Check in this order.

If you are using the original key lock switch they are known to be a problem area.
Loose connections, check that every thing is tight. This includes the connections in the control box.
Bad battery, try another battery. If your battery is run down and on it's last legs, this could be the problem.
Bad contacts in the relay, if you have a multimeter check the resistance across the contacts, it should indicate zero or very low resistance. If you don't have a multimeter try and connecting the motor directly to the battery, you need some form of switch, a hefty one not a micro switch, to control the power and cut it when not needed.

Check it out, you have nothing to lose.

Hi Karl,

Cheers for that but the electrical system is all new as the entire original loom was missing when i got it. I just have it running straight from the battery through a 70amp fuse.

Cheers chas, I think next thing on the list will be getting the brakes sorted / upgraded. The rear has been fully stripped, cleaned and adjusted but is still terrible. I think a disc conversion will be on the cards
