Title: my c5 restoration project
Post by: Jonny on 12, February, 2011 - 18:13:05
hi guys, just bought a c5 today and will be restoring it. the chassis has some light rust but nothing to bad. i originally thought it came without a pod but found it in the boot  :) it is missing the pod pins though. it has all the usual stuff aswell as tool kit, battery, charger,  high vis mast with instructions and owners pack. the battery was dead when i got it measuring 0 volts on voltmeter but i did my little voodoo trickery that i do to revive batterys and sure enough it bounced back into life  ;D

the front tyre has been replaced with a white one, all the other tyres are flat so i'll be ordering a new set soon. both lights work, haven't tested control box as i don't have the wire to connect pod to it. unfortunately one side of the front wheel cover is cracked- not to badly though also the wheel hubs are quite scratched there are also some deep scratches on the body.

the chain tensioner seems to tuck in more than usual, almost touching the chassis. could this be to do with the chain? it is quite rusty. i'll post pictures in a minuite.

did some work on the c5 today, it is almost disassembled now. got to the point on the video were the pedals are removed. the handlebars came out surprisingly easy which was nice. went into town and bought some sand paper and rust remover from wilko. worked surprisingly well de rusting the chain and the large u shaped thing that holds the boot up. the chain tensioner sat better today also.

pretty productive day   :)

I don't think it belongs to a C5 unless you are thinking of going under water with yours  ;D

did a bit more work today, removed body from the chassis. installed an led bulb, removed middle pedal thing and have installed anti bounce guards for the chain tensioner. also my pod wire arrived today from chas. ordered a crank remover off ebay incase i need to take of my pedal cranks again. at £4.30 with free postage i couldn't resist  :) there seem to be a few cut wires in my c5, i originally thought they went to the lights but both front and rear lights work. some seem to have been cut up near the rear light, some down the front where the pod wire comes out anyone know what these wires may be for?. pictures:

on back of seat, red and purple wires going to the rear brake light: http://s1213.photobucket.com/albums/cc463/JonnyAdam/?action=view&current=IMG_0351.jpg

at the front: http://s1213.photobucket.com/albums/cc463/JonnyAdam/?action=view&current=IMG_0353.jpg

by the way heres the link to the pedal crank remover incase anyone wants: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=160485039117&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT#ht_789wt_907

i've got more cif now so weather permitting may do some body cleaning on sunday.

You will have several wires that are not used that look like they have been cut, but these are if you a horn or indicators fitted, so if aren't fitting any just tidy them away.

As Andy says, you get several loose wires at both ends of the loom for horn and indicator kits.  If in doubt, you can check the wiring instructions for the various accessories.They're all shown on Ray Walkers site;
http://www.sinclairc5.com/acc_inst/acc_inst_index.htm

..or the circuit diagrams on our own download section.

thanks, done alot over the past few days. de rusted and re painted chassis, cleaned body, fitted new schwable tyres it's looking good now  :) need to get some side decals, new brake cables, new drive belt and power wiring kit. my original battery is going flat after 3 days of no use unfortunately. i also found a BRAND NEW unopened palm treo 90 pda which i bought. (love the early palm os's) had a tungsten t5 for the past 5-6 years but sold that as it was getting quite tired.

will post some pictures of my c5 tomorrow  :)

absolutely KNACKERED today. got up at 7 and spent 3 hours down the scrapyard, did get a relay and a huge fan motor though  :) have spent the rest of the day reassembling my c5. it's now reassembled! almost complete just need a couple of pod-body connectors. tested it and the microswitch and motor worked but the pod was all lights on. managed to fix this by giving it a good clean. found a spider living inside it! anyway it's all working now however on the motor load indication side when the motor is not activated the 1st and last led's are on. when the motor is activated the green light comes on (and i assume that the others would if the motor was strained.

all i need now is a nice sunny day to go for a test drive

Pod is working ok with what you have said.

The other LEDs on that side will light when you start putting a load on the Motor, trick is to peddle fast enough to keep just the green LED lit.   :D

eurocarparts are doing some good deals on batteries so might be worth shopping around. Halfords seem to be getting a bit pricey lately  :-\

still haven't got a new battery, and am skint now. just spent a load of cash on plastic and other bits and peices, and i need to do LOADS of work on my antweight and fleaweight robots for antweight world series 36 on november 12th but i shall try to do another mcdonalds run when the weather is good  :)

on a side note one of my team mates says they can get me some 12v gel type leisure batteries so fingers crossed i can use them on tomahawk  :)
