"Dave" requires some treatment...
« on: 23, July, 2009 - 18:50:27 »
"Dave", our resident c5 that we loan out, needs a bit of tlc.

I went to loan it out to the Sea Cadets at Ardingly and found that the chain was slipping so badly that you could barely get moving. Since it is a fairly new chain I thought something else might be amiss  :-\.

Having taken a proper look I found that the chassis has bent causing the offside rear wheel to move forwards and upwards. This in turn seems to have caused movement in the axle alignment and shortened the distance between the  two cogs, hence the Chain slipping - it is now too long  ::).

The first piccie is of "Moneypit" , showing the wheel sitting correctly in the wheel arch;

This next piccie is of "Dave" showing how far the wheel has moved;

Not a great piccie, but this is where the bend has occurred;

I'll take some better ones once I've removed the chassis to repair it.

I don't know exactly how ,or when, this happened, I suspect the person riding it has hit a deep pothole, bumped off a kerb or hit a "speed bump" too fast.

But don't worry, "Dave" will be resurrected  8)

Poor Dave, hope he's back on the road again soon, you've got me worried now Karl after i had chain problems a few months ago, but as it all seems alright since replacing with a better chain, but you always have that thought in the back of your mind if something is not quite right after you have had problems .

The bend on the chassis where the drive shaft goes through has bent a little more than lotus designed it to be.

Karl will fix this I'm sure.

Yeah its not really visible looking at the chassis - but the wheel shows it all to well.

This is a better photo now that the chassis has been removed;

I'll see if it can be straightened and used on another c5

If not it will be stripped of everything useful and help keep some other c5's on the road.
