Title: Brooklands Test Hill Centenary Celebrations Sunday 22nd March 2009
Post by: Karl on 14, January, 2009 - 20:25:34
We've been invited to take part in the centenary celebrations for the Test Hill at Brooklands Museum.
http://www.brooklandsmuseum.com/

This is basically a really steep hill that we probably have no hope of getting up - but it guarantee's a laugh  ;D

Can anyone beat Ray's effort at the September '08 event ?

Not much notice, but for those that want to it could be a chance to modify your C5 and claim the glory for being the first C5 to get to the top !

A reminder of the scale of the challenge !!

There is a press conference for this in February, so it looks like it will be quite a big event and high profile.

Hopefully we can manage a good turn out of C5's  8)

I would love to join you all on this one, as the last time at brooklands was a great day, but its the weekend we come back from Disney Paris so i will have to wait till the second brooklands meeting.
Looking forward to the first meeting of the year that i can attend.

A real shame you can't make it mate - I reckon you could have gone a lot further up the hill !

Still, there is always the chance they might let you try it again in September  ;)

Angie (noonoo) and I went along to Brooklands yesterday to help with the press conference, part of the build up for the Test Hill centenary.

As always, once it got busy we didn't have time to take many piccies - but here are a few we took on arrival ;
(ps ignore the date shown, I changed batteries on my camera and forgot to amend the date  ::))

  (http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i257/1stbooboo/c5brooklandspressconference002.jpg)

(http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i257/1stbooboo/c5brooklandspressconference003.jpg)

The model that used to be located outside Heathrow Airport,on the roundabout;

(http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i257/1stbooboo/c5brooklandspressconference004.jpg)

...plus the real thing peeking out from behind the building;

(http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i257/1stbooboo/c5brooklandspressconference005.jpg)

..me having a laugh on a Raleigh Chopper. Weird thing is, it's the same colour as the one I had as a kid  8)
(http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i257/1stbooboo/c5brooklandspressconference014.jpg)

...the C5's parked amongst some of the vehicles that will be at the main event
(http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i257/1stbooboo/c5brooklandspressconference015.jpg)

(http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i257/1stbooboo/c5brooklandspressconference016.jpg)

(http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i257/1stbooboo/c5brooklandspressconference020.jpg)

...Angie trying out a new toy  ;D
(http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i257/1stbooboo/c5brooklandspressconference023.jpg)

A busy, fun day. Some journalists tried out the C5's on a "test area" set aside. One gent even interviewed me - but I forgot to ask which station it was from  ::), he then test rode a C5 talking into the microphone.

Everyone who tried a C5 ended up with the "C5 grin" , with complete agreement that they are superb fun and didn't deserve the bad press they got in 1985.

That alone made the whole day worthwhile  8).

The Brooklands staff also commented on how the paying visitors to the museum formed a queue wanting to try out the C5. Although we weren't a scheduled part of the programme, we did allow a few people out on them , which was a huge success.
We're now looking into arranging some demonstration rides during the Easter half-term, helping the museum raise some much needed funds.

With regards to the Test Hill event on 22nd March, could anyone that is interested in bringing along their C5 let me know.
Same as with last years Brooklands event, entry will be free to those that participate - but you will need to be on the list.

Retro Andy

the penny farthing in the picture is actually a replica built about 6 years ago, each of the spokes is actually two joined together to keep the costs down and to make it easier to find replacements.

Martin is busy in his shed developing some ideas to help him get his c5 up that hill... :-X

Fingers crossed for some half decent weather !

Shaping up to be a good event  8)

- for those bringing along a C5
your entry tickets will be at the gate, either myself or a "volunteer" will be there to meet you.

- satnav postcode KT13 0QN

- late arrival; should you arrive after 0930 then access is not guaranteed

It was good to see Adam again, and he had even more stuff with him this time - a proper Alladins cave of goodies up for grabs !

He has said he will try and get to the September event as well, but I'll provide more details nearer the time.

..as good as the pictures are, they are not able to fully portray the fantastic atmosphere of the day. The sight,sound and smell of all those cars & bikes tearing up the hill was awesome.

It was an honour for us to be asked to participate in the Centenary celebrations , and getting in free was a nice bonus. Plus Adam was there selling goodies at a discount, so a very worthwhile day out for those that were able to attend.

But above all else , a very big thank-you to all the Brooklands staff for making sure the day ran so smoothly and for taking such good care of us.

I've received the following email from Brooklands Museum ;

On behalf of Brooklands Museum, I would like to send you and the C5 team our thanks for your involvement in the Test Hill Challenge event on Sunday. We have had some great feedback from people who enjoyed the day. We are currently collating the photographs from the weekend; I will send some over to you when complete.

Could you possibly send me the names of the brave C5 people who ascended Test Hill? We have the signed Risk Acknowledgements, but some did not complete their full names. I would like to send the official ‘Ascended Test Hill’ Certificate to those involved.

Many Thanks again.

...ordinarily you are not permitted a "run up" , the rules of the Hill are that it is a standing start only.

After Martins pleading on our behalf, I think the Brooklands staff took pity on us and allowed us a running start - using everything you could manage  ;D

It was really hard work, even my 24v didn't get to the top - but it might have if someone fitter/lighter was using it....

.....plus correctly fitting the quick release battery clamp on my left hand battery would have helped  ::) :D

My pleasure, I guess it's my way of giving somthing back to the site that has given me so much help and enjoyment.

I will do a longer version on DVD for you and post it back with the drivers if you like.

I thought it best to do that one first and I'll work on the other this week.

The camera got passed a round quite a bit on the day, so there's no telling who filmed what , other than Kurt's brother (also called Karl) who filmed most of the last part - best cameraman of the day ;D

Umpa wasn't given the best of raw materials, so a good effort on his part  8)

Just re-watched the footage of this , a real shame we didn't have "challenger" available for this run - but then it was this event that was the inspiration for building challenger in the first place  ;D

Bring on the TARDIS ... 8)
