A firm favourite on our calendar, Team C5alive will be attending the 2012 Alternative Energy Racing event being held at Santa Pod on Saturday 12th May.
Full details to be published nearer the time :)

Some additional info for all those who may be tempted to come along to the 2012 AER event at Santa Pod ;
Dear all,
Alternative Energy Racing is back for 2012 – Santa Pod’s showcase event for alternative fuel and electric vehicles. The 2012 event takes place on Saturday 12th May.
If you’ve got an alternative fuel or electric vehicle in your fleet, this is the event where you can show it off to the wider world and interact with fellow enthusiasts.
As with previous year’s events, AE Racing centres around the dragstrip, and there are trophies for the fastest vehicles of the day, but it’s not a an out-and-out race event. Most people will be in attendance not to set records but to socialise and network with fellow enthusiasts and those in the industry.
A few plans and changes for the 2012 event:
- I am hoping to be able to open the event to those with electric vehicles on Friday night, to allow entrants to camp over and charge their vehicles overnight. All entrants are also welcome to stay on Saturday night for an additional charge to allow them to get home again. This should open up the event to competitors from further afield and also allow everyone to make more runs on the day.
- Due to time pressures on the track, I have been asked by the race director to only allow vehicles capable of at least 50mph on track. However, this does not exclude slower vehicles as I am also planning to have a shorter sprint track that can be used by the “cycle-type” vehicles, so everyone with an alternative fuel or electric vehicle will remain entirely welcome, no matter how fast or slow.
Both of the changes await confirmation, but I am hoping I will be able to confirm these shortly. In the meantime, if you have any ideas you would like to see implemented, please let me know!
Entries are now open and I will start to update the website with 2012 entries as they come in. PLEASE REGISTER ASAP if you want to receive newsletter updates. You can enter by replying to this email or by visiting this page: http://www.aeracing.org/entry2011.php
Please feel free to forward this email onto any friends, colleagues or associates that you think might be interested in Alternative Energy Racing 2012.
Thanks in advance for your involvement in the 2012 event!

Looks like some of the proposed changes may make the event better suited for the c5's, especially having a smaller track set aside for cycle based vehicles .
-
With any luck, my bus will be back on the road and I will be attending! ;D
-
I definitely want to be there ;D
-
That is good to hear guys , it is nice to know this event is likely to be well supported once more by Team c5alive ;D
I'll sort out my application soon :)
-
Don't know if i'll be brave enough to go down the strip but i'll come along anyway ;D
-
I will be coming to this one this year :) But we are having the weekend away and I won't be bringing along my C5, But I will joining in with the wife and family this time so really looking forward to a birthday treat.
Retro Andy.
-
I noticed that it will be Matt's 14th birthday on the 12th so he at last be able to use his C5 on the public roads for the first time ;)
Retro Andy.
-
Don't know if i'll be brave enough to go down the strip but i'll come along anyway ;D
there will be a smaller track set aside for the less powerful vehicles so you'll get chance to play :D
This is always an excellent venue to meet up at, looking forward to a superb day out 8)
-
I've submitted a registration form for "Teamc5alive" to take part in this years AER. I'm assuming that each "driver" has to register individually to receive their free entrance ticket and be allowed on the track, so if you want to take part you should consider completing the registration form on the AER website (link shown earlier in this topic).
-
Entered! 8)
This is even more a must for me now I want to start an electric car classifieds website
-
Still not quite sure what we're doing with transport but might have to register anyway just in case i can make it ;D
-
Good to see the interest is building for this event...the more the better as it helps the organiser when it comes to negotiating with those in charge of the site for extra facilities.
-
You won't need brakes on a drag strip!
-
Trust me they are a positive bonus !!!! ;)
-
Only Bankers get a Bonus ! :-\
-
or the extra cornering if you change the handle bars around..............
::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::)

-
I must admit to being a bit worried at the lack of response from the AER team this year :-\
No reply to my emails and no 2012 entry list on the website is a concern...I'll still register a few more entries though and see what happens.
-
I registered last week but have had no response ?
-
Also registerd and no reply so far ..... :(
-
Some good news 8)
I phoned Rick today regarding this years AER event. He confirms it is still going ahead and that due to other work commitments he has not given the event the attention it deserves. He still has a large number of emails to respond to , as well as the website to update , but hopes to make good progress on everything this week.
So, if you still want to participate in this years AER please make sure you register asap . This is a really good event to get involved with...and watching that jet car go down the track never gets boring 8)
-
Decided i might aswell have a go, so have just sent off my details and we'll see what happens ;D
-
E-mail from Santa Pod arrived last night - entry list to be posted soon :) :)
-
The AER website has now been updated, so if you're not on the list of participants and want to take part then get yourself registered asap
-
I registered, but not on the list, so maybe i didn't meet the cut off date - if there was one ?
-
http://www.aeracing.org/entry2012.php
Dont think there is a cut off, e mail Rick Cuthbert, he's only too keen to get as many people involved as poss.

The 2012 confirmed entry list is also online, but it would be very helpful if you could check it here: http://www.aeracing.org/entry2012.php
…And let me know if the information is correct. There are also a number of missing pictures, mainly because the website-based entry form was corrupting files. If your photo is missing, please reply to this email and attach it so we can update the entry list with your picture.
Please note that I have also separated the entry list for bicycle-type vehicles (that includes Sinclair C5s!) and those that won’t do 40+mph at the finish line. There will be a new-for-2012 trophy up for grabs for these vehicles that we will run on a mini sprint-track!
I can also confirm in this email that gates will be open on Friday to allow entry to people to who need to trickle-charge electric vehicles overnight. This should allow people to drive to the track on Friday afternoon, charge up on Friday night, run all day Saturday, charge again if they need to before heading home. Camping is available on-site.
Please let your friends and contacts who are interested in Alternative Fuels know that the entries are open and AE Racing is all set to GO!

-
Cheers Plod, have sent an email :)
*Edit* And just received one back ;D
-
Just sent my details off! I'll be there!
-
As i didn't race last year ( so just paid on the gate ) do we get an email that we print out to show the people on the gate that we have free entry , or do we just tell them our names and what vehicle we have ?
Wasn't sure if we'd get another update from the AER people so figured i'd ask those that went last year :)
-
...assuming things have not changed since previous visits , once you've registered you just turn up at the gate on the day and your name should be on a list. You then get handed your ticket(s).
-
Only just sent off email requesting that I join in with team C5alive, hope I'm not too late :)
Retro Andy.
-
Just got the updated AER details ;D
We've all now got race numbers and the details of the sprint track are :
Sprint track
The cycle-sprint track will be open from 1000h-1300h and 1400h-1700h and will consist of a long drag down the first straight, a 180 degree turn, then a slalom back to the start/finish box.
Not sure about the slalom :o ;D ;D
Didn't see your details on it Andy, but it does say that there will be another update next week.
-
It says that gates open at 8.00 on the saturday, but there is an option of staying overnight on the friday should people wish to.
-
Last year they did ask that we all took our driving licence with us...even though we were using bicycle derived vehicles ::)
If you have your licence handy it might be worth taking it along !
-
Here's a copy of the email. Looks like all us sprint racers need is a cycle helmet . No driving licence required.
Dear Alternative Energy Racing Subscriber,
AE Racing is nearly here! The event takes place on Saturday 12th May, and things are really getting revved up/fully charged! (delete as applicable to create the pun of your choice)
Tickets
I have assigned two weekend tickets to every entrant on the entries list (see here: http://www.aeracing.org/entry2012.php)
If you think you will need more, please reply to this email with a request for more and I will try and arrange it for you.
Arrival
Tickets will be held on the gate in the office directly to the right of the payment booths. Tickets will be held under the drivers name, and the vehicle must be present in order to collect tickets. This is to prevent anyone from taking tickets not meant for them.
Gates open at 0800h on Saturday, but if there is anyone who would like to stay on Friday night to trickle-charge an electric vehicle for example, please reply to this email to request further details.
Once tickets have been collected, please head to the AE Racing pits (I will include a site map with tickets) where someone from Santa Pod Raceway will greet you.
Timetable
Because AE Racing shares its date at Santa Pod Raceway with the Street Nationals Event, the timetable for the day can be viewed here: http://www.streetnationals.co.uk/timetable.php
All AE Racing runs will be made in the “RWYB (Run What Ya Brung) Sessions” (from 0930h), and you can make as many runs on the track as you want in each session by simply joining the queue in the fire-up road.
You must visit the sign-on office at the base of the startline tower before you can go out on the dragstrip.
Winners presentations will take place at 1800h on the startline once the track has closed.
Race Numbers
The entry list page has received an update here: http://www.aeracing.org/entry2012.php
Every entry now has a race number e.g. AE011. Please display this clearly on your vehicle where possible. We have a white marker which we can use to write the number on rear windscreens of cars, but you are welcome to make a sticker with your race number on if you want. This must be visible from the rear of the vehicle at some distance, so please make it as large and clear as possible. Bikers can display their numbers on the backs of their jackets or by covering their numberplate with the race number.
Cycle-type vehicles for the sprint track can get away with a much smaller number, because race-control will be standing right next to you at the startline!
Equipment
All entrants must bring their DVLA driving licence, except those running cycle-type vehicles on the sprint track only. Everyone on the dragstrip will need to bring their driving licence to sign-on.
Bikers must have suitable protective clothing – that means gloves, helmet (with visor/goggles) and jacket as a bare minimum, full leathers and boots are highly recommended.
Car drivers with open-top vehicles will also need a helmet.
Cycle-type vehicles will require the rider to wear a bicycle helmet minimum.
Sprint track
The cycle-sprint track will be open from 1000h-1300h and 1400h-1700h and will consist of a long drag down the first straight, a 180 degree turn, then a slalom back to the start/finish box.
Staying Over on Saturday Night
Anyone running in AE Racing is welcome to camp on site on Saturday night.
-
Unfortunately it looks like I may not be able to make this.
-
Karl looks very much like Ray and Elecrtic Dave does resemble Karl in them photo's on the entry list- lol :) ;) :D
Ps the wife says watch that 180 at the end of the sprint track !
-
8am? :o
I wasn't even planning to be up at that time on a Saturday let alone driven across the country. What time are you guys getting there?

We aim to arrive about 10.30, really looking forward to seeing everyone and a great day ahead :)
Retro Andy.
-
Have fun today guys Id love to be there !
-
Had a great day at Santa Pod in the sun :)
The sprint / slalom track was fun, and i think i came away with the quickest standard C5 .... the 24v were just too quick for me though ;D I did try to go even quicker, but when you have to stick your foot out to stop it tipping, it's probably time to slow down ;D
Was great to meet up with everyone, and well done to Dave for 2 excellent runs down the black stuff in the C5000. I didn't take many pics, but others did and i'm sure they'll be on here later.
Made a change for it not to rain, and with the Street Nationals on, there was constant drag racing all day.
And as usual, Fireforce put in another superb performance .... that's one quick car ;D
-
Great day out yet again this year at Santa Pod - some serious competition taking place on the sprint track with some scary two wheel moments experienced by several of us - Great to see a good number of c5alivers - Plod had his 'Rambo' C5 which really looks the part (even more so after his of road mud moment !) - Minidaz recorded a very impressive time in possibly the fastest standard C5 ever - Electric dave as always impressing the crowds and the commentator with his 57mph run down the drag strip - and Karl well he was media king for the day having to be dragged away form the many interview crews battling for his appearance :) ;) :D ;D - Goldfinger had a good maiden voyage in its new 24v set up - one slight moment when it melted a wire after changing batteries but soon back up and running - next mod upgrade the wire for better current handling Matt loving the extra speed on his Birthday adventure- Great to be able to see all the many different vehicles there on the day and also great to see Retro Andy and family popping by and joining the fierce competition on the sprint track ;) ;)- all in all a great day out - if you haven't been yet I recommended it - Hopefully Plod has some photo's to share -now of to the shed for next years mods.............................................................
-
Thanks to Plod , Minidaz , RadioMarty ,Matt and RetroAndy for coming along to form TeamC5alive at this years AER
ElectricDave had a superb time with the c-500 beating two of the the BVS electric motorbikes and coming close to some big budget sponsored entries. Plod took some excellent footage of electricDave in action on the track so hopefully he will get to post it on here soon. Just goes to show using scrap parts to build your vehicle can still get excellent results - especially if you've got the know-how which, luckily for us, isnt a problem for ElectricDave 8) It would have been nice to see "challenger" allowed take to the main drag strip again , especially as several slower vehicles were permitted onto the track :-\ , something I'll discuss with the organisers for next years event .
There were several highlights of the day, for me it was meeting Cedric Lynch and chatting to him about his Isle of Man success and watching the gasps of amazement as his home built bike (made in 1991) managed 64mph on the track :) Having a ride around the site as part of the c5alive posse was also a good laugh and it certainly got us noticed.
We have already been invited back to next years event so that will be included in the diary for sure. A great day out for everyone.
-
Sounds like you all had a fantastic day, shame I couldn't make it there.
-
Some of the pics of the day, some video to follow ...... 8)
