Indicator option
« on: 29, May, 2013 - 18:11:01 »
I am contemplating using these:

http://www.marktplaats.nl/a/auto-diversen/autosport-onderdelen-en-toebehoren/a1001871459-nieuw-set-van-2-led-richtingaanwijzers-richting-aanwijzers.html?c=827ab967057e9f5ff33a0fad145c2c0e&previousPage=VIP_SIMILAR_LISTING

for use as rear indicator lights by mounting them inside the reflector unit (not sure if the reflector can be taken apart without much damage)

If you wanted to take the reflector out I think you will have to cut it out of the light.

They look good. Be great to see them attached to the C5 if you do fit them  :)

They would look great if you could get them fitted, but I think the light would get damaged if you tried to take it apart.

I ordered a set today, see what it is like.
To mount them inside the reflector I will probably dremel backpanel off (just the center light part, two thin slits) and slide the led panels in left and right.

After a few hours work.....

I had the bright idea to make a small slot at the bottom and just slide the indicator PCB in.. That worked quite well except the PCB was 'floating' in the free space between the reflector and the back panel.. No problem: just drill a few small holes behind the PCB location and inject some hot glue and it should stay put.. Well, almost... The distance between the PCB and the back panel was larger than I had anticipated and the hot glue just poured into the reflector leaving dark ugly spots visible from the outside. :-[

Rescue time: I 'Dremel'-ed the shape of the PCB out of the back panel and painstakingly removed the hot glue from the reflector. Then the PCB was glued to the piece that was cut out and glued back into place into the back panel.

The other indicator was mounted in the same way, cutting out the shape of the PCB first, this time I only needed a small hole for the cable at the bottom.

The color in the picture is a bit filtered: in real life the indicators are quite orange  ;D

Front indicators have not arrived yet...

I've seen those on ebay and wondered how to fit them, now I know :)
Looks great - I might go down that route myself. I assume any general flasher relay for a car works ?

No, you will need a flasher relay specific for LED lighting because these modules use very little power and a normal flasher will not start at all or flash very fast.
