Title: Click
Post by: harpy on 03, January, 2013 - 19:26:35
Hi everyone, I am still struggling to get my c5 running. After all the hassel  with the lack of wheel bearing and jammed wheel, i got everything ready for the big test now its finally stopped raining, and all i am getting is a click from the control box. The pod lights seem OK, full set on right. On the left,2 outside amber then one green when i press go. All it does is click. Is this minor or major? If this was my car i would say its the solinoid. As i understand engines more than electrics i await instructions from those that know.
Hope someone can help.
Thanks,  Ray.
PS.  Is there anyone with a c5 near me (west berkshire) seems most are "up north", would be good to meet someone who knows.

Hi harpy,

one of the possible problems is if the C5 has been stood for some time the brushes tend to seize in their retainers. See if you can make a direct 12v connection to the motor and ensure it's rotating.

Hope this helps.  K.G.

Hi - It sounds as if the issue maybe with your motor - If possible disconnect the motor cables from the control box and try them direct of the battery - make sure you prop up the drive wheel when doing it - it could possibly be the brushes sticking  through lack of use - let us know how you get on - Marty

I live about 50 miles away from you but I am still having teasing problems and I don' know much about getting C5's working :(

Once again thankyou to all you C5ers. My problem was the brushes,i poked them and it now works. When i get more time i will have a look inside the motor, (i presume the brushes come out from the inside or is it possible to remove from outside ) but at least i know it works. Next question is what noise should it make,it sounds a bit rough but that might be normal. Is there any footage including sound to compare.
Many thanks,  Ray.

Hi Ray,

poking the brushes in is only good for a test but not as a solution, should the brushes not move freely it can lead to arching and this will burn out your brushes and commutator quickly. The noise that you hear could be arching, the brushes wearing in, the bearings, or your mistrust.  ;)

IIRC there is a good description concerning the motor in the 'Unofficial Service Documentation', this can be found under 'Downloads' on the home page. If not let me know.

Not that I know of, but with five computers you will have five different audio results.  :o :o

Hi there I think that you will find that the bearings are making the noise ..When you get time to strip it down also check out the small bearings at the front that go inside the gearbox the shaft  some times breaks off due to the belt being to tight also the motor dropping of the support ..
Regarding the brushes you cannot take them out without damaging them the only way is to replace them .....but if they move easily up and down the tube and there is some length on them just give them a little WD40 ..
Bye Chas
