Lucky for us the recent "heatwave" coincided with our trip to Belgium , so we were able to enjoy some roof down motoring on the continent for a whole weekend  8)

We set off on a 6am ferry from Dover to Dunkirk on Friday 14th June and headed for our first overnight stop at Varlet Farm (www.varletfarm.com) located not far from Ypres. The plan was to spend Friday and most of Saturday touring some of the WW1 sites of interest around the area, before setting off to Antwerp and then meeting up with some more MG Car Club members ready to take part in the MG Car Club (Antwerp) 35th Anniversary Run on the Sunday.

Varlet Farm is an excellent B&B and I highly recommend it if you want to do a similar tour of the area. We visited Tyne Cot Cemetery , Passchendaele Memorial Park, The Menin Gate (Ypres) ,The "Brooding Soldier" at St. Juliaan, The "In Flanders Fields Museum" in Ypres and also took in The Hooge Crater Museum and cemetery before heading on to Antwerp.
At 8pm every evening a "Last Post" ceremony is held at The Menin Gate and is well worth attending, quite a poignant experience. Visiting these sites is certainly very though provoking to say the least.

On Sunday we took part in the 35th Anniversary Run

On our final day in Belgium we went along to see the Atlantikwall site near Ostend which features preserved WW2 gun emplacements

We then headed back to Dunkirk to catch our evening ferry home. We were pleasantly surprised to find ourselves sharing our boat home with a group of cars on a Cannonball Run

Quite a trip  8)
