Title: New C5 restoration
Post by: C5 ENTHUSIAST + RESTORER on 10, January, 2010 - 15:16:05
I.v just started a new restoration project .Picked the C5 up a few weeks ago and it was in very good condition apart from slight pitting on the chassis .So rather than leave it as it was I decided to do a complete stripdown .It was told that it was only used for about an hour then stored until now .It's the best I've seen for ages .Anyway take a look at it after cleaning the body and the chassis..
More photos to follow later in the week

Yes it will be a great C5 when restored ...Just checked the serial plate and the date is an early one .It was Nov 1984 no 644 built before the launch date .Not many left from this year.....

Doesn't seem to have had much usage, once you've finished that one Chas it will make a really nice C5 for its new owner  ;)

Did a little rebuilding today check out the photos ..also striped down the motor ready for greasing the bearings and removing the old grease from the gearbox and replacing it .
You can see from the photos that it has very little use.
Just check out the teeth on the gearbox ..
More phots to follow .

Well not much doing out side so decided to rebuild the motor .First of all cleaned out the inside of the motor (dust etc ) then added a small amount of grease on the back and front bearings .Then got rid of the old grease from the gearbox cleaned it then applied some new ..Then as you can see built it back up ready to put it back on the frame .

That is so nice, I dont think I've seen one put back together so fast or upside down, looks a lot easy than when its on its wheels, I do it this way next time (upside down, not as fast  :D)

Well I always put the frame back on with the body up sidedown as long as the body is supported .

What I am going to do is leave the battery connector top with the key in .Then connect a second set of power cables to the control box and take them through the other side of the body and fit quick release battery clamps ,so if wanted you could use either side or both for extra mileage..........

Cleaned up the front wheel covers .Chain fitted also fitted an anti jump chain guard .
Also as you can see I've fitted quick release clamps + left the original key switch in place
Checked the electronics seem to be ok but will need a test run first
Also as  you can see tried the quick release clamps first (ok no problem) Then the key switch (same again no problem ) then connected both up together and all ok
(By using two batteries could double the distance)

And then fitted the back light and checked both front and back lights all ok

If you look back to my photo of the c5 with the connectors you will see the original key switch and the quick release cables ....As it's been said they there is no protection on them (if connected the wrong way round  for just a fraction of a sec it will blow the control box) So I decided to make up some new cables with a 70 amp relay + protection diode in line to protect the control box  also a switch to give more security..take a look I will be fitting them asap...

Fitted a new power cable with a switch and reverse protection built in and works well

Also left the original key switch in place you can now use either side or both to double your power

Will be for sale soon
