The project begins!
« on: 13, November, 2010 - 16:27:01 »
Some pics, away we go!  ;D

It took ages to clean with it having like splashed house paint on it, got half the front done and some of the side, loads left to go. I've been using Surfex HD in water with a plastic scrubbing brush and a used pan scrub.

The motor doesn't seem connected properly into the clips? With the motorpart being brown and the gearbox being lighter in colour. The wiring is all hacked about, as is the control box. I've took the whole lot off.

If you pedal with both wheels off the ground, do both wheels turn? The right hand side wheel seems a bit tight in places and doesn't turn when you pedal. Although is fine on the ground, possible stuck on brake I guess.

Its looking good, 25 years of dirt and grime there ..... :D

Getting the C5 back to a useable state is the best bit about owning a C5.

Its well worth all the effort  ;D

Hi there just had a look at your motor and the gearbox seems to have been put back wrong there is a keyway on the gearbox and it does not seem to be used .That's properly why the motor is upside down  ??? but not sure clean it up first then take some more photos of it bye Chas

Chas
You are are Right, it doesn't appear to have anything holding it in, the way that has been put back.  :o

Won't have any problem taking it apart  ;)

With all the heat sensors missing and the wiring tampered with, going for a "relay" conversion might be the simplest route. If the pod and control box are salvageable they could then be sold on to bring in some funds for other stuff.

Just to answer one question, when you peddle/drive only one wheel gets the drive (motor side), the other wheel is free spinning, but may still turn depending on the amount of friction in the bearings, but there will always be some 'drag'.

It really is a good feeling getting your C5 back on the road, cleaning everything and making it feel wanted again  :)

Cheers for the comments everyone. What does a relay conversion consist of? I think I'd like to restore it to original condition but I'd like to know all the options.

Relay conversion simply dispenses with all the electronics and safety. The relay selected needs a decent current capability, I'd suggest 70 - 100 amps because of stall current pulled., using the small switch to operate the relay and pass the current.

Tbh if your not to sure about the basics then seek help or don't do it, or you could easily have a fire or other nasty accident.

Your one of 'us' now sonprecious, and plenty of help on here to be had :).

Alan

C5 bits come up all the time on eBay, so a nit if patience all will be well.

I've built a couple that run on a relay instead of the original control box and pod. You can build in some thermal protection for the motor by using the existing sensor that fits on the flattened part at the bottom of the motor casing near the brushes. I also fit battery monitors to the "dead" pod housing - all the spare innards go to radiomarty for recycling  8)

They are quite simple to set up and really reliable.
