Charlie's back on the road again, i removed the tensioner, give it a good clean and lubricate, and fitted a better chain (the clip was'nt broken) and it seems much better.

I got it from a different bike shop in town to the previous one, the brand is KMC silent bike chain, i had a quick try after fitting it and pedaled as fast as i could with no problems, still need to try it a bit further and up a hill to be sure, but it sounds much better than before.

I recently  had the same problem and it turned out to be the spring on the chain tensioner.
Replaced spring and now all ok.
