Title: making my own sinclair spacer plate for the mirror
Post by: frankev on 08, December, 2010 - 21:11:46
A few weeks ago I bought a great new set of mirrors, there was one problem, from the left mirror the spacer plate was missing. A friendly C5 owner send me his spacer to use and I made a copy.

I have to perfect the method a little but it works, and it looks much better then the photo's show. Stupid flash reflection from camera. ;)
any way, I go to mount my mirrors tomorrow. :D

I will ad some English comments in a day or two.

That is a top effort mate - you might want to make a few spares and sell them via the forum !

Hi Karl,

I am afraid that I am in the stage of learning. This was my first attempt and it worked out pretty well. But what kind of spares could you make more?
A spacer, a fracture plate, maybe a mirror? (the outside i mean).
I am more then happy to give it a try if you have some parts that need to be reproduced. as long as you remember that I am an amateur in this field, up till now. But selling them is more your cup of tea. ;)

There was a little bit of bad luck with my effort. The resin I used to make the copy was hard and broke easy. The mall I used from clay, I now learned shrinks in the oven, less then 1% but enough to break the spacer plate as I tried to fit it on. Second and third attempt are in process now. I made a mall by painting the spacer example plate i have with a brush with latex, maybe 40 layers or so.
I now have an outside and going to try it again with the same resin but was already informed that I should use PU rubber. At 45 pounds for a single bottle of this rubber, I try it with the same resin first. You know, we cheap Dutch.
Also made a mall from playdo, children's clay that dries in the air, I dried it with the original in it so it couldn't shrink, but took a while to dry.
I keep you informed of my progress.

Hi there,

Since I am still waiting for the Sugru to arive, I tried to mount the mirrors with the old first tried one, the one that broke on the edges. The one you see made in the proces in the picassa webalbum. And hurree! Look at the result, My Sinclair is ready with mirrors mounted and all.

I also had a appointment with the people from Fablab, I think you have fablab in England as well. They have a 3D laser scanner and a laser that burns everything not necessary, away from a block of plastic, so you are left with an exact copy of the original. You just go there and do your thing. You just pay for the materials you use.(and have to clean up your working space behind you  ;D )
I was thinking in making the spacer plate for right as well as left in blue plastic, nicely coloring with the side panels, but I guess that has to wait now for somewhere in the future.
Happy me.  :D :D :D
