mmm, gave this one some thought !

As the owner of C5alive I really should introduce myself, especially as we have a nice new home here complete with new neighbours.

I'm Karl and ,along with my wife Angie and my daughter Jordan, have taken over the reins for C5alive from Mark.

As a shift-worker for a large London based firm ( :-X) some days are easier to spend on C5 stuf than others.

I own five C5's at the moment, a couple of which are quite special - Voodoo and the "furry one", both "parts-bin" specials.
Along with Hank,Paul Bunce,Ollie,Johnny,Mark & Neil I completed last years London-Brighton run on a C5. I've also attended most of the meetings, so I've met quite a few people from here.

Once my job changes settle down I will be sorting out some new meetings and making more friends.

I currently have 5 C5's, one is my first, fully restored and kitted out, she's been on man runs etc including the Wales run (excellent jobby!!) she has no name, but I call her a few choice ones when I have to peddle up some of the steep hills in Derbyshire!, one more is on the bench now, going through a full restoration, three others are waiting to be done.
I have met up with loads of great people, because of the C5

Cheers..Lee, Lee

It s been sitting in the guys garden for years and rust has firmly taken a hold on the chassis, holes galour,it does move just under pedal power ,but someone has taken a scissors  to the wiring i think,i do have the motor but also bad condititon, also gear box but missing one of the nylon cogs,no boot lid,no hub caps, no front wheel cover ,brakes seized, tyres rotted away ,lots to do but we have the technology to rebuild it i hope with a little help from people on here.

Blablubblubublabbu is right, there's more than a few others here who aren't afraid to "improve" the original design a little  ;D

Bit like your £25 special, having a "parts-bin" C5 is great coz you are free to experiment without fear of trashing a pristine example.

Hi Everyone!

I'm Oliver 26 from Yorkshire, I grew up with sinclair products and always wanted a c5, and even worse remember when they were so cheap. But of course never had the means to buy one, well now I can so the hunt is on for a restoration job, this seemed a good place to start!

Hello all, my name is Andy, i am eighteen years old on the 14th (for the second time anyway, i will be 36 years old) I live in South Wootton, near King's Lynn, which is also close to Sandringham, I work at a Citroen dealership as assistant manager in the aftersales department which is only just a couple of miles up the road, so will be using c5 to go to work on. I live with Karen, we have been together for 15 years this July, we have two children, Brandon who is 9 years and Sasha who is 6, we have a small dog (Toby) two guinea pigs (Mike & Marty) and a rat (Jessie) the rat is Karen's, but she would have snakes and allsorts if i let her. I was a big fan of c5 when it was once first produced, but firstly i was only thirteen and my mum & dad would never have bought me one anyway, I used to go in Comet whenever we went shopping and looked at one in the showroom, silly thing is i had several c5 brochure's from then, but all got lost or thrown away. now i have had to buy one's to replace them, as the old saying goes if i knew then what i know now. Anyway i finally bought a non running c5 off ebay for £130.00 last November and over the few months have stripped it down totally, sand blastered frame and had it powder coated, i have re-assemble'd her (or him, have'nt give it a name yet) and am just waiting for wiring loom before finishing touches.
I have attended only one c5 run (Norfolk) a couple of months ago and meet several other nutters! with the same devotion for the c5, but i am looking forward to others once my is all done. I was thinking of putting a run on here as there is some good cycle tracks locally and also can go as far as Sandringham, how about a Royal C5 Run ?

sorry to go on.
Retro Andy.

Hey, Its a yank!!

That'd be me. :D
Not by choice mind you, rather be somewhere in Wales, I hear Cardiff is cool.

I don't actually have a C5, love to get one but for obvious reasons, can't.

At any rate I first saw the C5 a couple of days ago and fell in love.  I thought 'Sinclair? Like the computer guy? Couldn't be.'  It was.

So I'm going to attempt to build a C5 from the ground up.  I've already sourced all of the parts I need, With the exception of the bodyshell.  I have a feeling I will be doing something in fiberglass.  It will be 24V PWM controlled with a 250 Watt 3300 RPM Motor. Pretty close to a stock C5.  Doing the math I expect about 24MPH out of it With the tyres I'm planning on getting.  Only about £18 a piece for 16" pneumatic tubeless on the wheel.  4x8.5 rims.  I just gotta figure out the fine details as to how I'm going to build the axle.

If anyone would like to shoot me some more detailed dimensions for the chassis, I'd be eternally grateful.  I would like to be able to fit an actual c5 body onto it at some point, so it would be helpful.

I already have a guy who can fabricate a chassis for me for free he just needs numbers.

I'm rambling so I'm gonna shut up now.

That's an interesting project you've got going and I'll help as much as I can.

Post by: Eric on 16, May, 2008 - 09:23:06
That would be beautiful Karl.

When I saw it I just had to have it.  I'm in California (US), and we've never seen anything of the like around here.

Our laws will permit me to run the beast up to 30MPH without incurring ridiculous fees.  I can register it for £3 and not be bothered by the police.  The pedals make the difference here.  With petrol prices as they are currently, I can't be bothered to shell out for a trip around town.

I'm gonna Rig up solar panels, and regenerative braking, just because I know how. :D

My wife is groaning at my cardboard mock up but I'll show her in the end. ;D

Oh, and the motor and front fork assembly is coming off of a Razor E200 Pocket Rocket.  I've ridden one and believe me, It has the power for this project.

It would be great to see regular pics of Erics machine but what is this pocket rocket?

Post by: Eric on 23, May, 2008 - 18:56:04
http://www.razorama.com/raporopa.html (http://www.razorama.com/raporopa.html) That my friend, is the glory known as a razor pocket rocket.  Electric micro-bike that will do 18mph on a full charge, even with my 190 pound butt sitting on it.

I have heard that they race gas models similar to this in Italy.

Hey they have belt drive motors available too.  Various wattages and various controllers.  I love using their parts, as they work well enough for most projects and the motors are really high-torque. they have a 650watt motor but its chain driven

Post by: Elias on 15, July, 2008 - 08:10:20
Hello all C5 enthusiasts,

My name is Elias and i live in Kaarina, SW corner of Finland. For years I have been thinking about building a recumbent but as I noticed a C5 for sale I did not hesitate. My C5 is good condition. It has originally been used by kids of a wealthy family to go to the shop in countryside. As they got drivers licenses the C5 was unused in a garage for years. After that the chap I bought it from had bought it for his old mother. This lady used the C5 in her everyday life instead of a bike for a few years. Now as she's over 80 years old her hearing has deteriorated so badly that it is not safe for her to drive in the traffic anymore. The only modification that has been made is an extra main power switch in the left side of chassis.

Some pictures taken at the seller's home yard: http://picasaweb.google.com/puolivarjossa/SinclairC5

The rascal sitting in the vehicle is my 5 year son. He is not going to drive the C5 in traffic even if he would be allowed to do that according to local legislation ;-)

I am going to use the C5 to pedal around here in Kaarina. The town is a modern suburban town with lots of bike roads. I will also go to next bigger town, Turku with C5. The distance of 8 kilometres of relatively flat terrain should be sheer fun.

I am fairly happy with my C5. I'll have to replace the battery as the present 60Ah car battery is almost done. I'll write about my battery plan into some battery related thread. I also have to replace one bearing but I'll write about it to another thread.

Hi Elias and welcome to the forum  :)

Your C5 looks to be in good condition with some nice extras.

Sounds like you have the perfect roads on which to use it, so there must be some fun times ahead  8)

Hello all (again!), I'm Gareth, living in Cleethorpes with a C5Martin ebay purchase.
I've already fitted 5 LED headlight and an LED rear bulb and fitted 2 solar panels where the visibility flag mounts on the back.

I intend to have the front wheel replaced with an alloy one with disc brake and fit scooter wheels to the rear so I can -(don't hate me for this one)- tow it with my GoldWing. It will be a dual purpose machine! lol!

My only problem is time... I work away from home a lot and nothing gets done :(

Hi there!
I,m Paul and live up in sunny (occasionally) lincolnshire.
I,ve owned a c5 for about 5 years since seeing it languishing in an old boat house next to a property that I was working in and bought it for the princely sum of 50 kwid.
I originally had the idea of doing some heavy mods including twin steering wheels at the front and an engine/swingarm/wheel assembly from a stepthru moped on the back but after cleaning it up and realising just how good a condition it is in I haven,t got the heart to do it so it looks like it will be wizzing round with it,s electric power soon and for a long time to come.
It is a january 85 machine with black rear boot and twin battery.
All that is missing is the drive belt and batterys/charger, I have recently fitted a pair of mirrors that came with the car and It has scrubbed up rather well.
I already spoke to martin the other day about getting the car powered up and will be calling karl in the next few days.

Check out the website for whatever you need, since Martin and I have taken the helm we've tried to ensure that what ever you see advertised is on the shelf & ready to go.

This is probably because I'm the worlds most impatient customer myself, and assume everyone else is the same as me and wants their goodies asap ;D

Hi all

Another Newbie signing in, I am Brian and live in sunny Cornwall (Not) it's a great place but like the rest of the UK at the moment not enough sun. I have been a Sinclair fan for a long time and have various stuff including TVs radios, multimeter's, computers and calculators I even have a black watch somewhere. I am now lucky enough to own two project C5’s with the intension of building one out of the two as soon as possible, then finding the parts to rebuilding the second as and when the parts come along. Unfortunately neither came with the extras like indicators horn or mirrors, hopefully I will stumble over these in time. Great site and I hope I can end up contributing something useful.

Cheers

I love to add diverse ideas to the C5 or anything else.

im from norwich, which has few hills (which im so thankful for when my battery runs out).
am gonna replace all the tyres and tubes (original rubber not really holding the air) and try and sort out the charging problem (im sure there will be a post on the techy bit of this forum soon)
am hoping to use the C5 to go to the school where i work as part of my degree

Great idea, but just be aware that C5s are immensely nickable and are tricky to lock up effectively with a chain.  I'd hate to see you post back here in a couple of weeks saying some scrote has swiped your C5 from outside the school gates!  Maybe you can employ am alligator guard-dog like Crocket from Miami Vice! LOL  ;D (Am I showing my age now??!!)

yes, thankyou, i was very concerned about that and have got a 6' cable lock for it. i have been considering my options for locking it up, i considered either putting it through the spokes of the front wheel (although this would be awkward to move the cover each time) or going around the rear axle, and obviously making sure its always locked against something secure. does anyone have any suggestions gor what is best? i looked at the security leaflet on sinclairc5.com but i dont think the lock i have will fit through the tiny slots on the wheels.

fit a small alarm system, such as a bike or small car alarm, they draw very little current, but make sure you choose one that has a motion or vibration sensing as some cheap car alarms work on a tiny voltage drop caused by the interior light switch turning on the light.

Option 2 is an ex MOD land mine.... ;D

Hello!  I'm Matt, and i live in Sutton, near Ely, Cambs (CB6).  I'm new to the C5 - have ALWAYS wanted one and was fortunate enough to pick up TWO in one listing from eBay.  Both are in pretty good nick and I've given one to my 14 year old son, Christopher.

My best mate is very mechanically minded and he's got both cars at his house at the moment.  There are no batteries with my C5's so having read up a bit I've come to the conclusion that a leisure battery is the most viable option.

Can't wait to get them going.  I do live at the bottom of a small hill (not massive gradient) so not sure whether they'll struggle with this (?) and not sure if it's a 'spur of the moment' thing or not!

Anyway, feel free to get on touch with any tips, advice, or meets!

Hi well i am Mike, ive just found this site after  being given a C5 that i didnt really want, after 18 months of having it, i was curious, and did a google to find out more and found this site.

Ive pretty much done the basics and got the thing running, but only for about 3 or 4 miles, i thought they did better then that?

Have i done something wrong?

Mick

Hi Mick

At the risk of stating the obvious, is your battery up to scratch ?

If it is then you're going to need to supply a few more details to help us identify what the fault is.

Other things to check depend on whether you're using the standard keyswitch set up or a modified battery connection.

Let us know and I'm sure we can get you rolling again.

Hey guys, i am Hywel from South Wales, a 20 year old product design student (as you probably guessed from the username!). My brother's partner brought down her c5 yesterday, and i am looking to do it up and restore it to its former glory! It has never been used, but has been stored badly and so has a lot of cleaning to be done, the battery is shot and the hand grips have been gnawed through...
Any advice? Despite my searching of t'internet i cannot find where to get replacement grips or the price of them, and am having trouble cleaning the beauty down, what would you expert recomend?
Just took it out for a pedal run though... goes like a dream...

perhaps you should look here for the quick bits you want, maybe ebay you cannot find other bits for, its part of the fun of getting a C5 working, beyond that i cannot give you anymore advice

Hiya mate and a warm welcome to the forum

Email me an address and I'll get some handgrips on their way to you - I've got a box full of them. As for cost, the first round is on you when you attend your first meeting  ;D

As for cleaning , personally I use Cif bathroom cleaner and a 4" paintbrush with the bristles cut down to make it nice and stiff...gets the Cif into the grainy finish without causing any damage  ;).

Scuffs and scrapes can be reduced by careful use of a sharp blade and/or wet'n'dry sandpaper.

The emphasis here is on "careful"  8)

Hi everyone

I'm Dave and I'm here on behalf of my uncle! He's inherited a C5 from his brother. It seems to be ok but we thought I'd join the group to get some info about what to do with it, uncle might even keep it as he wasn't left much else!

Basically before we decide what to do what should we look for? What might go wrong with it, if it hasn't already? You'll know the type of things we need to look out for.

Thanks

Dave

Welcome to the forum Dave, sorry for the delay in responding but you've caught us at a busy time - Martin just moved house and I've had some IT gremlins  >:( Service pack 3 and Virgin upgrades equals a very frustrating time  :-[

Take a look around the forum and feel free to ask about anything you're unsure of.

You're always welcome to pop along and try out our loan C5 (aka Dave  ;D) to get a feel for the beasties.

As for your own C5 I'd recommend sorting the basics first ; connect a 12v car battery and see if it runs. Let us know how you get on and we can take it from there.

Hey guys and gals.

I'm Steve, currently living in Wells, Somerset - but hail from Cardiff originally.

Considering replacing my 21-speed Saracen Ikon Full Suspension mountain bike for a Sinclair C5 - with a few mods.

Would you believe the C5 is actually only just younger than me by literally a matter of 2 and a little bit months??  I gotta get me one of these babies.

Hello
My name is waran and I live in south wales near cardiff. I don't know if there are any C5 owners near me, if there are I don,t see them out and about. I don't have a C5 at present and so am on the lookout for one, anything considered if anyone has one for sale. I am not totally new to the C5 as I swapped my moped for one when about 15 years ago. I had a grey boot version with twin batteries and chargers, although the batteries were knackered and only one charger worked. I had great fun with my C5 with very few problems except once the magnets in the motor became unstuck and attached themselves to the armature. my father managed to fix it though but eventually I let someone have a go and they managed to break the rear wheel, so being a teenager with no decent income I was forced to sell it, I also did not realise you could get spares.
I sold mine to a member of the battery powered vehicle society, which I allways regretted. I am now looking forward to owning one again. Thanks.

Hi Warran and welcome to the forum mate  8)

If you are out there looking for a C5 to buy, you could road test my newly formed "buyers guide"  and let me know if you found it useful ;)

Nice to hear you previously owned a C5 and have decided to return to owning one of Sir Clive's finest creations.

Hi Karl
thanks for the advice, read your buyers guide and found it very usefull. There's certainly lots of things to consider before purchasing a C5. The problem is though that i will probably end up purchasing one from ebay and due to the location of some of them it is unlikely I will be able to view them and so decent photos and asking the right questions will be a must.:o

when a purchase one I will keep you posted. Thanks Waran.

Hello,

My name is Koen, 38 years old, 4 kids, I live in Belgium in the town Hove close to Antwerp.
When I was young I played a lot with Sinclair computers (ZX81, ZX Spectrum) and was fascinated by the C5 that regularly showed up in some PC magazines (HCC) at that time.

2 years ago I bought one second hand for 175 euro from a nice guy in the Netherlands. The C5 is almost complete including the charger, the only thin that is missing are the white plates to fit the rear tires. I also don't have a good battery. Also the lock on the back is blocked, I can fit the key but it does not turn.
The biggest mistake I made a year ago was to fit a battery in the wrong polarity, since than it didn't run anymore.

Over the last weeks I got it up and running again. I had to replace a fuse in the control box. Still the display is not working...
I'm now looking for a good battery, further I plan to disassemble it to paint the metal since this doesn't look that good.

Nice to see this forum alive,
Koen

Nice to have you onboard Koen, a warm welcome  8)

The rear hubcaps are still available brand new from Adam Harper.

Your display pod might be repairable , could be worth contacting c5Martin

Hi All,

Another newbie!

My name is Paul and I have bought my first C5 over 20 years since I first saw and wanted one.

I bought one off ebay and it needs a little bit of work so expect me to be asking some qustions on the technical forum etc.

I like all things transport, own a couple of cars and my own plane that i fly as much as I can.

I live in South Gloucestershire about 5 miles north of Bristol and have a fair bit of land to play on so i dont have to worry about juggernauts coming up behind me!

Hopefully speak to some of you soon

Paul

Hi Paul , great to see another new member  ;D

Incredibly cool that you have your own plane  8)

Welcome to the world of all things C5 , as we've said before on this forum - it will probably bring you pleasure and frustration in equal measure, but you will never get rid of that C5 grin  ;D

Hello everyone.  I'm Mike and I'll be 30 when the C5 hits its 25th anniversary.

Regretfully, I can't say I've been lucky enough to own & ride one of these marvellous devices, but I've always wanted to.  Now, more than ever before!

I live on Portland in Dorset, at the heart of the Jurassic Coast.  We have many hills and terrains which I guess would be somewhat unsuitable for a C5, but we also have a great selection of long flat stretches, and a dis-used railway line which runs into town.

I don't know where to start really.  So, if it's ok, I'll ask a few questions and see whether I can get answers...

1.  Does anyone know where I can get a working/safe to ride C5 for little or no money?  I'm so poor!  (Pathetic excuse I know, but I just want to ride one before they all disappear!)
2.  If I were to encounter a hill, would pedalling as well as using the motor make the hill easier?
3.  How does the rear break light work.  Does it come on when you apply the break, or does it come on and stay on when the front light is on?
4.  If I were lucky enough to own one, would I be permitted to ride it on cycle lanes?  What about pavements?  Would I be permitted to use it on a mmain road in amongst main traffic?

Sorry, but my enthusiasm got too much there!

Hope to hear from someone soon.

Mike

Hi Mike,

Welcome to the forum mate  :)

In answer to your queries;

1) If there was a cheap c5 out there for sale it would probably be snapped up pretty quickly. A cheap C5 can also be a money pit, so going for the cheapest could well be a false economy. Check the buyers guide for examples of what to look for on a used c5.
Ebay/local "feebie" papers/local house clearance shops etc might be worth keeping an eye on. Happy hunting and good luck !

2) A c5 is a battery assisted "bicycle", so there will always be pedalling involved. They don't climb hills particularly well, so hills are a bit of a challenge.

3) The c5 is not fitted with a rear brake light as standard.

4) see (2) , as it is technically a bicycle you can use a C5 where bicycles are permitted.

Hope this helps.

Karl
