Title: J'ai un C5!!!!
Post by: minimin on 21, April, 2009 - 20:48:57
Hello!
After many moons I finally have myself a C5! After searching on eBay, i saw one 10 miles away, and after having missed out on the last one close to home, I made an offer and I picked it up last night  :)
The electrics are all in a box, and have all been serviced by Adam Harper, so should be in good nick. I have never had more people stop me to say hello in one trip. I took it out for a test run today, and was really surprised to see how fast it went, even if I did have a few near death experiences (the brakes broke! :o) but about 6 people stopped me to say how great it was to see one - one person even remembered seeing the launch on the BBC!

Thanks. Your advice on the brake cable was much appreciated. I will be at the bike shop tomorrow morning! I zipped along on the C5 to the bike shop which was shut!!!! So, just a few questions. First, what is a good way to clean it? Really cleaning it. Its filthy. Also, how do you smooth out holes/scratches?

Thanks Karl, will do that tomorrow. It came with the two wheel covers but no centre bit, so do you know if I could buy them anywhere, or am I best of sticking to eBay? Also are the wing mirrors meant to be really bendy?
Thanks

Hi Mark,

I'm really glad you got a C5 they are awesome machines.  I know what you mean about the attention you get on one - people just love the C5.

As for the centre hubs, you might struggle, I was lucky enough to get some, but I spoke to Adam Harper about getting some, and the bad news is they were never supplied as a seperate item, even tho they have a part number, then only come with complete hubcaps.  Adam sells these at 40  quid each, but they are brand new mind.

I think you can buy some non original ones I have seen some somewhere but I'm one of these funny buggers that like original parts :)

As for wing mirrors being bendy - not really the plastic case bends if you wobble them but they should be quite firm.  I got some new ones from adam, and make the thing look fantastic - and they really work too.

Good luck with ya C5 dude

Regards

Ian

Non-original centre caps: http://c5alive.co.uk/ecommerce/product_info.php?cPath=4&products_id=20&osCsid=da37f16164d1637b0d5b6b552e3a77f1

Obviously they look different to the originals, but they still look okay and are a cheap way of improving the look of a c5 if the original centre caps are missing. I've fitted them to one of my own C5's.

The mirrors do flex and wobble , and need to be fitted using the black plastic clips. I suspect these are designed to allow the mirror to unclip on impact without damaging the bodywork.

I know I had seen em somewhere LOL.

As for the mirrors - mine don't wobble just the bodywork they are attached to.

When I fitted mine I had to drill two holes and they screwed on with the black clips you mention.

I was really impressed by the way you can move the mirrors (like on a car).

REVISION.
I've had a look and it is the chain, which makes the noise as it passes under the Chassis, in the middle of the Y. But what can I do to stop the noise? The chain is only new.

my chain is a pain too,

Usually they jump under load and come off the chain tensioner.

Is that what you mean ?

Sort of.... There is no tensioner. It doesn't change when there is a rider or not, but when you push the pedals, you can see it hitting the frame. Also, when there is a leaf (very mechanical) pushing it does click but not so loud. So I suppose I need a big leaf?

I dont know what you mean by leaf, there should be a tensioner without it the chain will jump.

Right, when you look at the C5 with no motor, through the back, you can see straight forward and the chain, which loops round. There is no sort of tensioner, just a chain and 2 cogs.
Title: Re: J'ai un C5!!!!
Post by: Karl on 23, April, 2009 - 08:58:03
..there should be a chain tensioner, a small arm with a spring and a cog on the end

http://c5alive.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=310.0

If not, Adam Harper still sells them.

Although a C5 can still be peddled without one , you will suffer chain slip when trying to get up hills etc.

Don't try to overtighten the chain without one as you risk bending the hollow rear axle.

Ahh! So thats what that is It was sitting in the box. I'll try and find the installation instructions. Next thing. How do you fill screw holes or and really big scuffs in the hubcaps? Some holes have been drilled in random places, and they need to be filled!
Thanks

I've never had to plug any holes in a set of hubcaps before, so I'm not in a position to advise. It could be that you're going to be the first to try  ;D (that I know of). I'd be tempted to take a look at what's available in the bodywork repair section of your local Halfords type place.

It might also be worth having a word with some of those guys that repair car trim or motorcycle panels , they must be pretty good with all types of plastic .

Let us know how you get on  8)

Good thinking! Will do that tomorrow. On the tensioner, my chain is really tense, it is a motorcycle chain, but it is too tense (i think) because it rattles away as it hits the bottom. From your picture it looks to have a big droop in the middle, so what I was thinking was when I get the white bit off, then I'll be able to put the tensioner downwards so the chain goes down the middle?
Title: Re: J'ai un C5!!!!
Post by: Umpa on 24, April, 2009 - 09:26:46
Hi Mark,

Do you mean when the tensioner is on the chain - it makes the chain too tight ? as the spring should only take up the slack.

It might be that the chain you have is just a little to loose but not long enough if you know what I mean.

I have ordered a brand chain (and horn)  8).  I think that will sort all my problems out.

I would not mod the C5 to fit the chain, I would put some links in the chain to fit the C5 or buy a chain.  As karl has said the rear axel is hollow and can bend under stress if the chain is to tight. Not worth the risk IMO.

My tensioner came with the C5 off, as the seller said it wasn't needed, so I don't have the spring. What I was planning on doing is cabletying the tensioner to the underside of the C5 and then letting the chain run through the middle, because there is a big enough gap.

I see,

If I were you and this is just my own opinion, I would buy and fit the chain tensioner. I tried to cable tie my spring tight and the weight of the chain snapped it in a week.

Your c5 will be worth more if kept original too.

Thanks. I need to take the white part off the C5. I've been to Halfords and spoke to a guy who owned a C5. He gave me the wrong tool to remove the pedals! It doesn't fit!!!!!!!!!!   >:( >:( >:( >:( Does anyone have a link for one or the size of the nut which I need to undo (connecting the C5 to the pedal arms). Also, does anyone have an original wiring loom available? Thanks

So now your trying to remove the body ?

Yes. ;D The chassis is really mucky and the top has rust on it. The bottom seems OK. I will need to completely re-wire it, the loom has been cut and the seller has given me some plain white wire, which I don't think will suffice.
Also on my to-do list it.....
-Pod Does it work?
-Control Box Why is all the wires cut, does it have fuses and does anyone have a cover?
-Battery
-Hammerite the chassis
-WASH IT DOWN!!!!  8)
-Fix the boot

Man that sounds like a proper Restoration job.  I cant help you any more m8. Some of the parts like a wiring loom and controller cover are going to be really hard to get.

But I can answer some of your Q's

Yes the controller has fuses
Dunno why the wires were cut

Can I ask - how much did you pay for this ?

No! ;D I bought it for £120, but it came with
-Charger (Modified for new batteries, but looks dangerous, only has one crocodile clip!)
-Tonneau
-Side Panels
-Wet Weather Coat
-Motor (not installed)
-Halfords Battery
Most importantly A tub of Hammerite!!!

But the guy did say they had all been serviced by Adam Harper, however, he has no record of what he has  serviced or hasn't. =[

I thought a lot of my wires had been cut when i stripped it apart, but discovered there are a lot of spare wiring built into the main loom for accessories like indicators, i looked at other pictures and compared mine.

Looks as though you are getting to grips with your C5 mate. I'd compare it to a house renovation or car restoration - at the very start it always looks a lot worse before it gets any better  ;)

Work out what needs doing first, what can be fixed and what has to be replaced - and how original you want to keep it. For example, neither "voodoo" or "Malcolm" run on the standard pod and control box setup.

Andy is right about the spare wires , some spares are there for connecting to the indicator kit and the electric horn.

Having the pod checked by C5martin might be worth considering, at least that way you will know for sure if it is fully functional or not

The original Sinclair battery chargers are still very good chargers, a sort of forerunner of the Optimate type chargers you see today. But they are getting on a bit , so I never leave mine unattended when they are in use.

If the motor was serviced by Adam there should have been a receipt, if that's gone missing why not contact Adam and see if he has any record of what was done - and how long ago.He also sells the wiring looms, but I've no idea how much.

Scott is busy sorting out a C5 similar to yours, so it can be done. Andy's is another example of what can be achieved, so keep up the good work !

Once you get your C5 up and running you'll have that lovely feeling of a job well done  8)

Remove the bulb holder to prevent damage to the lense

Put your hand up under the front bodywork by the front wheel. Gently squeeze the two retaining lugs together and the headlight should lift out.

The emphasis here is on gently, the plastic is old and getting brittle.

Hi Mark,

well from the picture it looks like

1) the top outer case and screws
2) Two fuses
3) top left where the opening is there should be a foam seal.

That box looks in very good nick from the picture, so when everything is plugged in it might work OK.  That missing cover might be a problem though.

The boot fell off because your two clips missing - its a common fault with C5's although mine has yet to fall off.

Just a quickie do you really want to paint the frame with hammerite ?  The original is a smooth grey.

keep up the good work

Ian..

I powder coated my frame it cost me about £20.00 and the end result was worth it, i think your best bet is to send some pictures to Karl and see if he can supply you with the missing bits, or keep an eye out on e-bay for a spares or repair c5 going cheap with the bits you need, as to get them seperatly is going to be difficult , good luck and keep up the good progress.

How DO you Powder Coat it? And Karl, the bits I need are in the Control Box Picture above and a lock, or a way of getting a lock to fit a key. Also, should the lock look like this?

There should be a "U" shaped clip that holds the lock to the boot , and the barrel should have a sort of "tail" on the end that moves when you turn the key. I dont have any spare boot lock & key sets.

The front brake cable outers are just over 1m long, with the inner cable needing to be longer still. You will also need all the ferrules if the originals are missing. These stop the cable being pulled up into the lever assembly.

;D...they are proper fuses, just a weird size.

Your best bet for a boot lock assembly would be Adam Harper, unless your local friendly locksmith can sort yours for you. The pins in the barrel can be adapted to fit your key, but you are still missing a few essential parts.

After seeing the Pictures on the other post, I have decided that the C5 DOES NOT suit red! It has gone brown! So, shall I cover it in a coat of Grey Primer or a coat of Hammerite? Also, about the legalities of a C5. Can I drive on the footpath? I live on a VERY busy road and the thought of cars zooming past at 50 is a bit worrying... :o
The traffic warden doesn't seem to mind, he said hi when I was out for a  spin. (Before it was take apart!)

hi mark,

When the body is on you can't see the frame anyway so I guess it's just a matter of using the best paint for the job. I'm painting mine the original colour when I get round to it but that's only coz I want it original.

As for the traffic, I can't say other than all the cars I have met have been very good. Legally you can't use the c5 on the pavement unless it's a cycle patch too.

Thanks. I'm going to paint it in Hammerite, but if anyone has any better sugestions let me know before 4:30 tomorrow. Next on the agenda...

What is this. It is on the plastic, where the Control Box looks to be.

Whatever that is it's not part of an original c5. My best guess it's a 3rd party controller. From what I have read they are fitted for 24 volt use. If that's what it is I would check the gearbox on the Motor is ok, as they tend to break on 24v.

I think Umpa is on the right lines, that looks like the remains of a non-standard controller. It's not exactly the same as those we used to supply in the 24v kits, but very simlar.

-Professional PVC Cleaner
-Flash

I've done it about 6 times today with all of these, and the thing wont get ANY CLEANER. Warren - How is you C5 so clean? What did you use on it?

lol Mark, I had the very same problem.

I found it best to clean it with a cheap creme cleaner its called 'cream cleaner' .

I also had limited sucsess with BBQ cleaner for oil stains.

I also used fine scotchbrite - the green pan squares with foam on the back.

Scrub like crazy and do it about 4 or 5 times - the results are well worth it.

Hi Mark,

Nice.  ;D After the 10th scrub with power PVC window cleaner and then a wash down with Cif Kitchen Spray, the C5 looks clean in the sun. But in the dark you can see muck in the grain, but I'm going to leave that. Thanks Umpa.
The motor works, I've hooked it up to the battery, but it meant to sound like it is about to explode? It has a a bit of tape round the gearbox, so I am just hoping you were wrong about the 24V, because I don't want the gearbox shredded. Also, he said it CAN do 30MPH, but he hasn't got it to do that.
So, I'll hammerite it down, and then leave it to dry :). Oh, and got to bury a fish. Nemo died yesterday  :(

Hi Mark,

If it can go 30mph even if it never has, its had a 24v conversion at some stage.  This means you should strip the gearbox and take a good look for wear or damage.  The motor should make a wizz sound - it its grinding it indicates a problem.

As for the body work, it takes ages and you may never get it 100%

Sorry mate, must have missed this one.

If you still need the help ;
Using either matchsticks or ends of cable ties (or whatever works for you) inserted into the small groove at the end of each finger ,you need to raise the "fingers" that grip the gearbox. By keeping all the fingers raised with the matchstickes/cable ties etc, the gearbox should then slide out.

To dismantle the motor and remove the fingers you need to undo the two bolts.

I found this two pictures of the control box wires, hope they help a little, if you have a complete wiring loom, then some of the wires have no connectors on the ends, these are only used for indicators etc, if your c5 does'nt have indicators etc then a lot of the wires are just neatly cable tied away, but the rest should be easy to work out, like the lights, the power switch, pod and motor.

If you mean once the light unit is removed, you cant seperate the rear lense from the grey bulb holder back part, the light is one moulded unit.

Andy is correct, once you have undone the two screws the rear light unit lifts away from the bodyshell. But the red lens and grey backing are bonded together, the only removable part is the black bulb holder - this just pulls apart from the back of the light unit.

Not exactly sure what you mean  ??? If you are talking about the front light, the lugs are attached as part of the light unit itself - if they are missing then the light is broken.

The rear light has two screws and a "lip" along the bottom edge.

They do tend to sell quickly.

I'm sure Martin will get the next batch sorted as soon as he can but, as always, it's a case of finding the time to fit everything in.

When the next lot is ready I will announce it on the forum.

Title: Re: J'ai un C5!!!!
Post by: Umpa on 22, May, 2009 - 06:18:57
The only alternative is to wire the battery directly to the contol box with the brown and blue wires. The normal method is to cut the ignition block off and stick some battery terminals on the end. This was always an rubbish effort and you can cross wire the battery.

As above - wait for a wiring kit, will save heart ache.

Also, if anyone has taken apart a control  box, is it essential to have the blue wire soldered? I don't have it, and my C5 has no indicators etc. Also, the wires both have connection heads, not soldering ones.
Thanks
Mark

Not sure what your talking about when you say soldered. Mine are fixed via little nuts inside the control box and are fine.

Well there are pictures of a C5 control box with the blue wire going under the board and being soldered on. I was just wondering (before I do anything!) Has anyone got any pictures of their control box set ups?
Thanks
Mark

Go to the downloads section of the main website;
http://www.c5alive.co.uk/downloads2.htm

..then scroll down to,and click on, the instructions for wiring the old style 12v QR wiring kit;
http://c5alive.co.uk/pub/downloads/QR-Power-Wiring-Fitting-Guide/QR-full-guide.pdf

The piccies there might be of use  :)

Right. I've had it. The electrics don't work. I've tried to do it but the stupid thing won't work. They (the wires) are all hooked up as advised, minus the x6 row of stuff, I don't have any of that. But, I have started testing. To make the motor go, i can connect the - motor to the bottom of the relay and it goes.
BUT I have started testing. The motor works when I connect it to the battery and the C5 makes a loud noise which is the belt rubbing on the drive cog. When I pedal and put on the motor, then it works too, but is silent. What is all this about? Is it normal?
Thanks
Mark

Does the pod light up and are you using the original battery loom or the c5 wire kit ?

I'm using the original wires and nope the pod doesn't light up. The circuit I have is

Battery ------- Switch --------- Motor¬

Right, so your not using any of the c5 electronics, and have wired the motor to the battery via a switch?

Yep. I sort of realise why people love/hate the C5.

Mark,

Before we can help you, your going to have to put everything back to standard - only then will we have a chance of helping you & even then it might be that you need to send the pod or controller or even both to be serviced.

Its beyond the scope of a forum to help in the repair of the box or pod as it requires knowledge of electronics, which to be fair you dont have - much like me :)

Right. Blank canvas. There are now no wires connected to anything.

"Malcom", the fur covered C5, runs without a control box or pod - just a few wires, a relay and a switch (plus a battery of course..)

It is a direct copy of the set up found on a couple of "new" boxed C5's that Mark (previous owner of c5alive) had bought. Must have been some of the last to leave the factory when it closed down, guess they were short of parts  :o

Although it will probably damage your battery in the long term, it might be worth considering if you're on a tight budget and just want the c5 to run  ;)

Has anyone got any clips that hold the pod to the C5?
Thanks
Mark

Also, have you got the screws for on top of the back of the C5 (behind the red light) and the little black clips on the top of that part, which the light goes on to Karl? Or anyone else? (Money waiting)
Thanks
Mark

Just a quick note Mark, you can get the side reflective strips from Karl, i did try and trim the first set i put on mine, but did'nt think the finish was not as neat as i'd liked, so i replaced them again, they might be about 2mm wider, but fit as good as you'll get.

I bought some too, you will have to trim them, but there is a convenient line to guide you.  I cut mine with the scissors and it really makes all the difference to your c5.

Self sticky too, just trim and stick.

So hows it coming on Mark ?  Have you sorted out the electronics ?
