Title: C5 Wanted for restoration
Post by: waran2005 on 14, April, 2009 - 10:45:00
Hello
I am a new member of the forum and I am looking for a C5 to restore. I don't expect it for nothing and will pay a fair price for one as long as it is basically complete. Is there anyone on the forum selling one, or is it going to have to be ebay.
I am not out to make a quick buck, I am genuinely interested and allways have been. I did own one quite a few years ago and now financially I am in a better situation I want one again that I can work on as a project.

               Thanks.

I think a lot of us have purchased are c5's from e-bay, you dont seem to get alot for money when you buy one for restortation, but its all the fun getting it working again, take a look at mine (Andy's project) it looked a right sorry old state, but the frame was alright and the main bits were all their. I paid £130.00 of ebay and spent about £200.00 restoring it, but it was great fun.

 ;D Hello
I have bought a C5 now from ebay but it does look a mess, I don't know if any one had seen it while the listing was active but I eventually purchased it for 117 pounds. When I collect it I will post some photos.
I think its complete, well has the front wheel cover and I think both hub caps, but does need lots of work. Retro Andy, your C5 looks great, hope I can get mine some where near as good as yours mate. Any advice?
The one I had years ago was a two battery version, it looked like a factory fitted set up, didn't realize they were that rare, any idea how many were made?
Can,t wait to collect mine, I will keep you all posted.

                         Waran.

I was watching that one. We really should make an effort club together as buyers to not out-bid eachother! Although my bids didnt reach anywhere near £117!

Martin and I agreed that your C5 was one of the best restorations we had seen, your advice could prove really useful for Warran.

Nice to see the forum doing its job  , putting people in touch with each other to help keep C5's alive 8) .

Makes it all worthwhile  ;)

hello
Picked up my C5 today and it does look pretty complete except there is no charger which I am not that bothered about. It all looks original, just scratched, dirty and some surface rust on the chassis. All wiring looks untouched and the motor/gearbox is the later type and turns over freely.
Mine is numbered on the back TR 3 which I thought was a bit strange but then I was told it was one of four that used to be hired out on the beach front many years ago. The guy that sold me his said his mate has the other three and asked if I was interested in those but he wanted payment there and then and I don,t think I have the room or money for another three so they will probably end up on ebay, funny i was only looking for one?
The front on mine is warped very slightly, has anybody had any success with trying to straighten one out?
Pictures will follow soon and work will commence, Catcha all tomorrow. PS i think I will try the electrics before I dismantle all, hope there are no problems.

Which beach ? the first time i had a go in a c5 was when i was 14 on holiday with my family, i think it was Paignton, but i'm not sure, i do remember me and my brother going up and down the prom for thirty minutes for a pound and we went on them twice while we were on holiday, i did'nt get to ride one for another twenty one years when i went on the norfolk run last March, it was great fun.
If you look on Martin's site he has some pictures of how to straighten out the front if warped, i did'nt do any testing to mine until it was all stripped down, i cleaned everything, sent the control box and pod to Martin and i cleaned the motor internals, replacing the drive gear and re-greasing bearings etc as i thought if i tryed it first if something was seized, worn or faulty it could cause something to brake.

P.S. Thanks for your kind coments Karl and Martin.

hello
I am still in the process of stripping it down, i have taken a few photots and will post them later. I have tried the electrics and it is a runner but what is strange is that the instrument pod is not lighting up at all, any one have any ideas why, if the ULA chip was duff i thought it would not even run or have I got this wrong?
Retro Andy, the C5 I purchased was used in paighton as you said, I may even have been the one you used as a child. The bloke does have the other three, do you remember if they were numbered TR 1 to 4, mine is number 3, and apparantley they have not been used for twenty odd years. I did view the other three and they looked complete but the front on one was severly warped and he told me I could of had the other three for 360 pounds.
      Post the photos later.

Hello
Me again, I see there are some people who are interested in purchasing one or more of the remaining C5's that he has. I think his name is Mike Prowse and he runs a self storage buisness I believe and his contact number is 07778 777511. I don't know if he will split them, but that would be fair for other members who wanted one to rebuild.
If hes not contacted soon they will be on ebay, and I think he would rather not bother doing that if he can help it. They are all white boot models.
Good luck to all those interested. waran.

PS let me know how you all get on.

I gave the guy a call earlier and I'm now in the process of finding some cash + transport. I might get all 3 depending on how it goes, although most likely I will just get 1.

Cheers for the info Waran!

..the C5 can run without a pod, check C5Martins site for how to bypass the pod if it fails.

If the pod and control box are known to be okay, then you want to start checking for bad connections etc. First place to start is unplugging the pod and checking the pins (squirt of WD40 or similar ?).

You could send your pod to Martin for bench testing .

Hello
Had a go at trying to find out why the pod would not work and have now located the problem, the pod wiring loom plug is faulty, there is no 5 volt supply on pin 1. checked back in the control box and its OK that end. Bypassed the plug to try it and the pod lit up as normal, GREAT. So it seems a simple fix and is only a problem from where its been parked up for so many years.
I think then the only thing wrong with my C5 when it was garaged was that the chain tensioner had fallen off and the battery may have been knackered. So perhaps those other ones may have been runners.
Thanks for your advice Karl, painted my chassis with the aid of my son so is not perfect but he thinks its great! Will definately post pictures later.

Hello
I have been very busy with my C5 and I have some pictures I would like to post. Can anyone tell me exactly how I am supposed to do this, I have uploaded them to photo bucket?
Progress so far is good, the chassis is painted, changed the faulty plug for the instrument pod, rebuilt the motor and run for 30 minutes, appears to run very well. Most mechanical parts are ready to refit and it is now a rolling chassis thanks to the new tyres from Karl.
The body has been cleaned mostly by the children, god they worked hard and to be honest there are quite a few marks but overall it looks pretty good, rust stains were the worst to remove.
I bought some TAYA chain from the local iron mongers for £3.50 a pack, some bike shops wanted 8 to 9 pound for the same thing. All i need to do now is sort my chain tensioner out and source a battery and that hopefully that should be it.
As soon as work out how to post pictures I will put some on.

                                Waran.

Hi Warran,

Whet you do is go to your Album in PhotoBucket and hover your mouse over the picture you want to post, a drop down box will appear - select the bottom box labeled IMG Code - and copy the text in the box (ctrl & C) then simply paste the text into your post.

Karl, if you wanted to tho - what would the original colour be called ?

is it just grey primer or ???
Title: Re: C5 Wanted for restoration

Hello
I will have to confirm what color the paint was I used but I think it was ford olive grey, I may be wrong, I will check tonight. But be ware as some paints are two stage (base coat & primer).
To be honest I think the halfords grey primer was a closer match to the original color but would then require a clear laquear coat to finish.
As said before though you can paint it any colour you like, nobody really looks at it anyway. Halfords paint is pretty good stuff being acrilic you can paint it on anything.
Took my C5 for a run up the street last night, went well and all appears to work fine, even the back break. The motor drive did start to slip eventually though, I will have to sort out that motor mod ASAP.
I used a 038 car battery, cost me £25 pounds, had discount as my son works in motor world, any idea what sort of range I can expect from this.
Thanks for all your constructive comments, more photos of finished C5 soon

                              Have fun, Waran.

I'd expect about 6-8 miles from an 038 , depending on the usual factors.

The belt shouldn't slip - especially if it's a new wider belt. Might be worth having another look at the setup.  Using the c5 with a slipping belt can cause additional wear on the gearbox drivecog, so it's really worth spending some time trying to get to the bottom of it.

Hello Karl
Had a look at while it was slipping and I could see that the motor support had popped out, I de-tensioned the motor and pushed it back in and it was OK again. Maybe I didn't have the belt correctly tesioned, apart from that it went well, I think that bracket modification is in order.
Thanks for the response Karl, 6-8 miles, not bad, I can visit quite a few places near me with that sort of range and further afield if I pedal a bit. My chaine tensioner bracket seems to be holding up.

Hello
thanks for all your kind comments about my revamped C5, I,m glad at least its one more saved.
One adult & two extremely hard working ten years olds scrubbed there little hearts out for hours cleaning that body, they done a great job. All they want in return is a go in it, well one is my son and he did have a go in it to the extent I couldn't get the little sod out, I had to box him in a corner and virtually drag him out.
To start I only used CIF white cream cleaner, scotch pads, and plastic scrubbing brushes to get within the grain and this did take over 90% of the marks off. I then spoke to my father and he suggested with those difficult marks like rust staines that I should try his elbow grease, honestly I am not taking the mick, the product was called elbow grease and he said you can buy it in most pound shops.
I then tried spraying it on and scrubbed away but it seemed to have little effect so I gave up using it. The kids then started using it and to my amazment the marks/stains started to come off. I then read the instructions and your supposed to spray it on and leave it for ten minutes to do its stuff and then it worked really well. It is suitable for plastics, says so on the bottle. What I did notice though is that after using that my hands started to go slimey so I suspect it contains some sort of caustic like oven cleaner so use rubber gloves?
Any one tried over cleaner type substances?

me again, here are some pictures of my C5 out in the sun, sorted that problem with the motor support, made a bracket and it seems OK now. Still need to do a few odds and sods before I am totally happy with it. All ready has a few new grubby marks on it from the local kids. All the best,, Waran.
