Title: Classic & Sports Car Magazine : (16/2/10 Cambridge)
Post by: Karl on 04, January, 2010 - 12:05:01
More details to follow, but I will be helping out with a magazine article provisionally booked for Tuesday 12th January in Cambridge.

From the email I received;

I'm a freelance writer looking to put together a feature ....on the Sinclair C5. Thankfully, for yourselves at c5alive, we have decided to take a more enlightened view of the C5 than some other car magazines, and give it a re-evaluation in this era of congestion and readily-available cycle lanes, especially as every year at the Tokyo motor show, yet another Japanese manufacturer reveals a single-person, white-painted 'pod car' claiming to represent the transport of the future. I like to think we Brits got there first.

I also am of the opinion that a car along the lines of the C5 is a 'people's car' in a way that even a Mini or a Beetle isn't, as, if a modern interpretation went on sale, it would be no more expensive than a cheap, imported Chinese scooter, and yet provide stable, reliable city transport for people as young as 16 who could afford to buy and run it on the most meagre of salaries.

Anyway, in order to do the test and put Sir Clive's creation in the right setting, we'd like to test-drive a good-condition (ie with the electrical system fully-charged and working) C5 around Cambridge.

Do you know of any owners in the Cambridge area (or anyone who is capable of slinging their C5 in the back of their car and driving there to meet us) who might be willing to help us with this feature?

Seems rude not help  ;D

If anyone wants to tag along and help out as well , let me know  8)

I imagine a C5 would go down well in Cambridge ... it's definetly a city more friendly towards bicycles than cars.
Would be cool to come along, but unfortunatly it's a Tuesday ( always a busy day for me ), and my C5's the wrong colour  ;D , but have fun, and i'll get Emily to keep an eye out for you ( she works in Cambridge ).

I know what you mean about the time off work  :-[, the date was chosen as it's a "rest day" in my shift rota. The guy doing the article needs it to be done on a weekday to fit in with the photographer.

Sounds like Ray is up for it though  :)

Looks like the snow is in no hurry to leave - unless it warms up over the next 24hrs it's looking doubtful that I will be able to manage to get to this.

If anyone else is able to attend and help out with this it would be most appreciated .

If anyone is interested in tagging along to help fly the flag ,drop me an email and I'll reply with the location details - I haven't posted all the info on here because it's an open forum . The meeting time is set for 10am.

I'd like to think the more c5's there the better , it'll make for some good pictures for the article  ;D

Thanks to those that have been in contact wanting to help out with this.

The suggested original meeting point seems to be a bit of a nightmare proposal, so Alan1310 has suggested an alternative.

I'll let everyone know of any updates or changes once I've received a reply  :)

There is now a new meeting point for this, full details to be published nearer the time - the new venue proposed by Alan1310 was accepted as a good idea  8).

I've replied to those that contacted me earlier, if I've missed you out of the "update email"  just let me know  :).

Post by: Karl on 14, February, 2010 - 13:25:51
Just a reminder, the Cambridge magazine article is this coming Tuesday.

I've received confirmation from Sam, the journalist, that it is all still on. Here is an extract from his email;

Does anyone have any period accessories or special editions, like those yellow rain capes and warning flags, or the ultra-rare Lotus JPS-liveried version that Ayrton Senna drove round Brands Hatch as a publicity stunt? Doesn't matter if you haven't, we've got photos if not. A brochure might be useful if anyone's got one, or the hoover maintenance and servicing guide and Rospa 'safe C5 driving' booklet, just to add a bit of period flavour.

Looking forward to sampling the 'revolution in personal transport' and giving it a fresh appraisal.

I've replied that nobody knows the whereabouts of the JPS c5's, so we've very little chance of sorting that out by Tuesday  ;D

I reckon we've got the rest pretty much covered though  8)

If anyboy else does want to tag along we will be at ;
 Newmarket Road Park & Ride
 Newmarket Road
 Cambridge
 CB5 8AA

Hoping to be there around 10am.

I'm all packed up and ready to go, but the sodding "tom tom" doesn't recognise the postcode for the park and ride location  ::).

So I've entered the code for Cambridge Airport instead - close enough to where I want to end up and also a big enough landmark to head for  ;D

See you there !

Thanks to Plod, Ray and Alan for helping make today such a laugh - not forgetting the guys from Sports and Classic Car magazine for treating us to a  top notch lunch at the Backstreet Bistro (highly recommended  ;D)

Hi there.

I bumped into your photo shoot on Bridge Street yesterday morning. Pretty cool to see four C5s together :-) The photographer took some pictures of my son admiring them. Do I gather correctly that the article will be in Classic & Sports Car Magazine? Do you know which edition?

Hi fanf

Thanks for dropping in and saying hello - glad you enjoyed seeing the c5's out and about  :)

I should get some more details soon from Sam about when the article is to be published, any updates will be added here so check back every now and then for the latest info. The good news is that Sam and the photographer were both pleased with how the day turned out and the quality of the photo's, which l think bodes well for a good article  8)

At the meal was lots of members from our mini club, and one of those people works in Cambridge.

He knows i've got a C5, and he was saying that the other day he stepped out of work and 4 C5's went driving past  ;D , so i told him it was you lot on a magazine shoot  ;D

Good news, I asked when the article is likely to be published. Here's the latest update from Sam ;

.....I don't think they're being intentionally humourous but it's in the next issue, out April 1st.

So it's off to the newsagents to buy a copy as soon as it arrives  8)

The "May" edition came out today, 1st April so make sure you buy the correct copy - my local newsagent was still trying to palm me off with a March edition (which would have been out on 1st Feb !).

The c5alive feature is on page 109 and covers 4 pages, I think it is without doubt the finest article about C5's I've ever read  8).

As an added bonus there is also a full page article about the Ayrton Senna C5 right at the back of the magazine (page 266).

yep - I'm really chuffed with the article, shame they airbrushed out the c5alive website address, but then you can't have everything.

I still think it's the most supportive feature ever written about Sinclair C5's, Sam has done an excellent job  8)

You said Karl its a shame the web site address was airbrushed out, but I can still read the web address on the side of the C5 in the picture on page 113, plus on page 187 there is a small article about an electric scamp car for sale and they do have C5 Alive's web address  :)

It was this article which made me buy my C5. My dad brought a copy of the magazine home one day and showed me the article. I'd been looking into them before, but with this i just thought "why on earth not" and bought it from eBay a couple of days later.

Shame I didn't buy it before, I'm only 5 miles up the road...

The article was superb, but it goes without saying it would have been even better to have had a few more join us using their own C5's .

But the even better news is that, as you've said yourself, the article inspired another c5 owner - which is what this forum is all about; keeping the c5 alive !

Just received a CD through the post from Tony, the photographer who worked on this article.

It contains all the pictures taken on the day that were not used for the magazine - some really good ones !  8)

Hopefully Ray and Plod you have got yours by now as well.

Alan1310 - email me your address and I'll forward yours on to you mate  :)  I couldn't find your details when I contacted Tony..,so I had your CD sent to me.

I have passed on our appreciation for the CD's and asked him if it was ok to use some of them for posting here, this is the reply ;

Hi Karl,
          glad you like the pictures. I think it’s OK to use the pics on websites (is this a club site or a commercial one?) but we ask for a credit, something along the lines of ‘Photos © Tony Baker/Classic & Sports Car’
Cheers
Tony.

So have a sort through and post your favourite one guys  8)
