Title: A question for daily drivers...
Post by: kamilb1998 on 15, April, 2012 - 09:06:55
What batteries do you use & how long do they last (miles & months/years)? I only appear to be getting about 300-400 miles out of one of my Yuasa batteries before the range begins to drop.  :(

Hi Kamil  ;), I have my batteries three years ago and they´ve run more than 2.000 miles in the C5 and in my electric tandem ( I use them in both vehicles). I use sealed betteries like this one:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/12V-12AH-Battery-12-Volt-12-Ah-Battery-/250974914267?pt=UK_Computing_Networking_SM&hash=item3a6f4546db#ht_500wt_925

I´ve two battery packets with three elements each one, so I have two batteries with 12 volts and 36 amp each. In a normal day, if I only must go to school with children and run into my city I only use one packet and I can run about 20 miles in the C5, more in my tandem. If I must go to my workshop, at the outside of the city, eleven miles away, I put both packets and I can get about 40 miles  8).

After three years of use there are no signs of reduced autonomy or tired batteries (crossing my fingers meanwhile i write). This batteries has been the best choice I could to do. You can buy three at least and getting one more every time you need more autonomy and connect in paralel way and they need less room than a normal acid battery, almost the half and weight less also. I spent less than hundred pounds in the six 12 volts 12 Ah batteries, shipment costs included.

Regards, Rafael

That's a decent range! I was thinking of getting two of these batteries, http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/170772227237?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2648, has anyone tried them before?

I use the older 75ah model of one of these:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/YUASA-LEISURE-BATTERY-L26-80-CARAVAN-BOAT-OUTDOOR-/110715741869?pt=UK_Campervan_Caravan_Accessories&hash=item19c72c26ad#ht_500wt_949

I used to use it for commuting to my old work which was 8.8 miles round trip 6 days a week and it would happily do that on one charge.

The battery your looking at is very good for cyclic applications like the c5 but I think its range will be somewhat limited at 33ah. If your buying two I'd suggest getting hold of the weight of these batteries and compare them to one single larger capacity battery you maybe surprised at how much they weigh.

EDIT:

The YC33-12 battery your looking at is 11kg so 22kg in total for 66ah.

6 of the ones rafarestaura uses would weigh 22.2kg for 72ah.

The newer version of mine I linked to is 19kg for 80ah.

I really do need a battery that will fit within they battery top though as I am using the keyswitch assemblies. I would like to fit a C5 Alive wiring kit but my C5 gets left around town quite often and they key does give me at least some security.

Put the battery in a battery box.....

Rivet on 2x Hasp locks....

Add battery isolator switch to box....

Hey presto secure battery and immobilised c5!

You can now give members a thumbs up for being mega.

Just added a battery level meter that will show how well you are appreciated :)
