Title: C5 Restoration for John
Post by: Retro Andy on 08, May, 2011 - 22:35:54
Hi all, I recently meet a man called John who lives about 15 miles from me in Hunstanton and has owed his C5 for a long time, but it has'nt been used for about 4 years, I am going to strip it down, clean/restore it for him. Here are a few pictures before I start, hopefully John will intruduce himself on the forum soon and be able to get out and about in his C5 again,
P.S Do you like the tent, perfect for a C5 ?

Hi Andy - the pictures are great and I like the cover.  Where did you get that from.  It is ideal for the C5 and it keeps it covered.  I think a wooden platform on the floor would be nice to have the tires of the grass in the event if it rains heavilly etc. -  John

Doesn't look too bad, a bit of elbow grease and some painting and that will come up a treat  8).

Not sure about painting the motor black though..and cutting the wires to remove the motor is criminal  :o

The tent would'nt be a long time store for a C5, this is a small kitchen tent used when camping from argos, but comes in handy for lots of things like this, I put it up as it was ment to rain yesterday and I like working outside in the fresh air and daylight, here are a couple more pictures

Been busy stripping down John's C5, and know its onto the big clean up before re-assemble and testing, not sure about the condition of the hub bearing in the left rear wheel, will it be alright ?

I have been testing everything before finishing putting everything back together again and have found that a couple of extra parts are needed, sorted out these with Karl earlier and will soon be here, then I can finish it all off and go for a test run.

Have been away for the week camping, but been finishing off John's C5 today, I have come up against two issue's, the first is that when the motor is running with the wheel off the ground all works fine, but when you try it with the wheel on the ground, it make a terrible noise when trying to turn and the belt comes off and the second fault is the pod isn't lighting up correct up the left
display, I think Karl will bring along some spares next week and help get it up and running  :)
Will add some pictures tomorrow, I think it has come up well.

Have you had the motor / gearbox apart ?  What condition was it in ?

Yes, had the motor/gearbox apart, cleaned and greased gearbox etc, didn't notice anything wrong, but I plan on taking the motor out and having another look.

Hi Retro Andy,
I found the same fault with a motor I had, it may be the same, so worth a look.

Coming off the motor brushes are two braided wires that then attach to the outer connector. This in turn is then attached to the RED & BLACK power cables. I found one of the braided wires not connected. This gave similar symptoms you are having. I used an old back end of a motor housing / brushes that I had spare but if this is your problem you should get spare from Karl.

Hope this helps

Lance

Many thanks, you might be onto something with that, plus I think I have a spare end from when I restored mine, will try that next.

I think that the motor issue maybe with the brushes, as the negitive one was very loose (broken) and could be the cause, I have tryed to swap with my spare one, but that broke trying to remove it (corroded in) even soaked it in wd40, so can you please bring along some spares Karl on Sunday, many thanks.

Many thanks to Karl bringing along the solution to the problem with the motor, a replacement motor housing and brushes done the trick, wired it into the control box last night and took it for its first run, all went well.  :)
