Title: Best way to transport a C5 in a car
Post by: peckishere on 29, January, 2011 - 20:41:54
Hello Everyone

I have recently baught my first c5 on ebay and I now have the task of a 3 hour drive to pick it up

I am also trying to figure out the best way to fit it in my car as I have a 3 door fiat punto mk2 and I may have to move the seats around to fit it in.

What is the best way to fit a c5 in a car and what should I be wary about when transporting one?

C5's are deceptively BIG.

If you end up strapping it to the roof, then remove the boot and and covers and strap it down well.

Good luck!

I ended up buying the Toyota Estima so that I could carry two at once. Then I found I needed my trailer as well  ;D

Omg im such a noob ive never seen the buyers guide or the topic on c5 transportation  :(

Ill have to crack out the haynes manual for my punto to remove the front seat as it says to do in the topic for c5 transportation. This will definetly be something usefull to learn as i hope to go to the gatherings and meet ups when i get it

And i might even make a video log on the day so i might even make a youtube video!

I actually haven't gone to pick it up yet lol.

I've managed to purswade my employer to lend me the company van for the weekend so ill definitely be able to get it home :)

if anyone wishes to see the ebay listing, here is the link:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=230579210505&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT

looks like the front break lever is missing, also seems to be an ex-rental c5 as it has the outline of a number 2 sticker on the boot and flagpole holes in the boot

I hate to sound any alarm bells , but the "offside" rear wheel (brake side) seems out of alignment. This could indicate a bent chassis leg, check the buyers guide for piccies of what I mean and compare to the photo in the listing.

It might be nothing and just the angle of the photo but I'd take a closer look. If it's been a rental then it may have been abused, that's why we don't loan them out anymore.

Looks a decent enough buy :) I wondered if it had been painted because in some photos the finish looks glossy?  ???

I bought a trunk frame that stands on the bumper with two legs, and two hooks with straps to put on the upper-side of the back door or the backside of the trunk barge.  ;)
works pretty nice, with two extra straps to secure the C5 firmly to this frame. Original it is intended to carry three bikes where the two hooks that stick out carry the frames.
Does it make any sense, what I tell here?
And of-course I have a roof-rack, that works as good as well.

I think its just a bit grubby, i think the glossy look is due to it being a misty / damp day when the photo was taken. I'm sure after I get it home and cleaned up it should look ok

After inspection of the photos, it looks like it may be due to the angling of the photography. the 'motor side' wheel looks ok in the initial photo but when you select another photo to view of the 'motor side' it looks different somehow.... i hope  :-\

if it does turn out to be a bent chassis leg, is there anything that can be done to bring it back into alignment?

The metal is soft enough that you can straighten it out by hand using a pair of mole grips, but the trick is to keep the "box section" intact. If the chassis is bent and beyond repair its not the end of the world, just look for a replacement chassis - they do crop up every now and then.

That's the trouble with ebay and purchasing items, until you get to see the C5 you can not gauge everything from the photos yet Karl's keen eye for detail and owning a few he has noticed a protential problem. Go and pick it up and if the frames bent knock him down and explain why you have done so this also depends on how much you have offered to pay as take it you have not already paid the guy until collection. Anyway hope all works out well

I'm gonna go for it anyway, as BooBoo says if it is a bent chassis it can be bent back into position using a mole grip (I don't think its likely that it is bent, I think its more to do with the angling of the photography)

I am interested in the front wheel cover, however I will not be able to purchase it until the 25th of this month as I am now strapped for cash after buying the c5 and a few items from the c5 alive shop to get it mostly functioning and to get it looking nice and not so grubby.

Now I have managed to book my employer's van for the weekend, what does everyone think is the best way of securing it down so it doesn't move around inside the van?  ???
