Removing/ replacing chain tensioner spring

Ive got an original chain tensioner and spring to fit to my C5- but I'm having difficultly removing the old, worn/stretched spring from up in the chassis, is there a particular knack to it? With its funny end profile it "hooks on" quite well, and is quite difficult to remove, given the limited access!
