I was more interested in a nice cup of hot chocolate and a seat close to the radiator

In the top picture "NO CYCLING" is painted on the ground, was you sheltering from the rain or is this why you had to stop at that point ?

Sadly some parts of the lovely wide new tarmac had the cycle lane painted out ,the council seemed to have changed their mind in a few places. We spoke with staff at the "Control Office" who confirmed we were not allowed to use some parts of the promenade
