Hi any one got some good ideas about a modified c5 ???. I would like to make a pimped c5 from an old wreck. Perhaps we could post some designs. I am going to try using Google sketchup.Hope to hear from you all soon.

Thanks Andy, went to Halfords and Maplins with dad today and got lot's of idea's - i think it would be good to have lot's of gadgets and lights but i need to save up !!! I am also still waiting for a cheap c5 to come up.Designs posted soon

Great news I got a Sinclair C5 today for pimping. The body was a bit tatty(cracked) so we got it cheap = £100 but its all complete including a set of unfitted indicators !!!(less relay) i cant wait to get started. but dad says it is my Christmas present.Here is a photo of it before we start:

Its great to see the before pics and then see the end result .......
My first C5 was restored with the intention of selling it, but once i had spent all that time getting it back to a working C5 i couldn't part with it, then the second came along, only bought for spares, and after a few weeks getting all working i deceided to keep that as well.
I will get rid of one someday, thats what i tell the wife anyway ! :o

Powered up today but no luck - POD did not light up and motor did not turn - put pod on 'stan' and all ok with pod - connected motor direct and all ok - Dad thinks problem could be in the control box - he thinks D1 is short circuit - any ideas before we send it off to C5Martin ???

Nice Christmas present mate, my parents would never have bought me one back in the day, but then £399 was a lot of money then, they did buy me several new bikes when I was younger, looking forward to seeing what you make of it, keep up the good work.
P.S dont buy every C5, I'm still looking to get another one day :)

Latest news - today we disconnected the control box to send of to C5Martin for repair when we noticed a bent over pin on the pod connection and a burnt out resistor. Dad replaced the resistor and a voltage regulator {?} that he said was no good and it all came back to life.Now we know it's all ok we are going to start the strip down.Good times !!!

Hi guy's we are nearly there with the body removal of the 'pimping' C5 just a couple of questions for the veterans :
How does the front light come off the body shell ? (don't want to damage it )
Can anyone recommend a crank removal tool (if think I recall reading someone had problems with Halfords one not fitting )

You put your hand up by the front wheel, and there a a couple of lugs that you can press. Take care the plastic might be brittle.

I reckon the toughest part is handlebar stem removal - the parts can rust and "weld" themselves together.
Once that part is removed, the rest should be fairly straight forward (..could be famous last words :o)

Thanks guy's for the info - regards the handle bar removal we used the suggested method i.e I held the the front wheel between my knees then Matt and Carolyn wiggled it side to side and eventually it came off. :) ;D ???

The shell that I've sold you marty was a right ole mare to take off as the handlebar stem is stuck fast and wont move so I had to strip off the handle bars of all their bits and slide them out and prize the body over the stem!

Sorry to hear that Fezza - no damage I hope as the shell is going to sprayed up for the 'pimping' project. See you Saturday (between 3-4 hopefully). PS the spare shell we are removing which has a 6inch split to the front will form part of the trailer for young Luke (future project).

ElectricDave found someone who repaired a shell that had very similar damage.
Don't want to scare you, but something to check when using a chassis from a shell that has frontal damage is that the damage wasn't caused by a crash. Frontal impact can cause bending to the forks and/or chassis near the headstock. I'd hate to see you put in long hours restoring the chassis only to end up disappointed.

How about doing the C5 in the Gulf racing scheme from the 60's i/e Pale Blue with the orange stripe running across it. This is my most favourite racing colour scheme ever.

Electric's back in and tested - slight prob with the pod red connection lead (intermittent connection at the control box) will resolder the connector and clean the pin's - otherwise all good - next job the newly painted shell back on - sorry no pictures of the shell until after the 25Th - Matt's Christmas surprise !!!!

Just a thought I had after looking at the pictures, I reckon it would be possible to alternate the C5 mechanic's ? has anyone ever switched the motor to the right and the brake to the left, the chain bracket is fitted to both side's of the frame, so could it be done, a left hand C5 ?

I've seen one with two motors - one on each side!!!

it would be Great if you coud if possible but bigger whell arches on , put on a flip plate, angel lights , speakers in the boot wired up to the front we you where your mp3 player would be ,lower it? bigger motor , body kit, vinals, (you can get memory fome fabric and strech it ove the seat), air horns,get a badge for the boot like (c5),a roof (watch out for the weight or iit wont be road legal ,

Not sure if this helps, but I do know "web marshall" and other security features can stop the piccies from showing, as photobucket is considered a social networking site and gets blocked. All you see is a small red x instead of the photo's.

Managed to finally get to take a look at Matt's Goldfinger yesterday as it had developed some belt slip during the Royal Run.The gearbox was setting on the 'fence' and the belt was a good tension however,the output drive cog had suffered some damage to the teeth on the tips. Luckily I had a spare motor to rob a gearbox off. The new output cog was also the slightly longer length so I am confident this should cure it.The photo shows the damaged one on the right hand side :

Seem's Sinclair were on top of all the issue's shame they didn't get a longer run at it - who knows what improvements they would have come up with.

Sinclair did get to grips with quite a few of the concerns raised, like changing the "fingers", boot colour,motor windings etc.
Shame they didn't get chance to release properly modified versions like car manufactures do - mark2/3/4/5 etc
If the c5 had been a success imagine which version we would be on by now, 25years later ?

We were in Great Yarmouth today and popped in to see the guy we brought the c5 off of that turned into Goldfinger - while chatting he told us that he used to live in Cambridge and knew Sir Clive's parent's and infact brought the c5 from them !.Could this have been one of Sir Clive's own vehicles !!

Hi Plod - the throttle and controllers were separate items - i don't want to recommend them until i have got them up and running and know they are up to the job -They were done on a budget with Matt's birthday money so time will tell - hope to try and get it going this weekend - if you need any help bud give me a shout as your only just down the road - once i get it sorted your welcome to pop over and see if the set up is suitable for yours. :)

That looks like the same kit Scott got for his "Bluebird" conversion, will be nice to see how it peforms .Could save a few pennies for future 24v conversions :)

I'm interested too in the results.....because i try the 24v 250w and it doesn't had enough power :-\
so i ordered the 350W.....but i measured that the 250w only did 160watt >:(

Hi Folks thanks for the interest - I will post some pics soon but our initial findings are :
Initial start off is very slow and under powered - poor performance on hills - ok on flat and when up to full speed - the control box i would suggest is not really up to the job and appears to have no adjustment to 'tweek' it. Having said that i think its gentle smooth action may be kinder to the gearbox and as young Matt is driving is safer ! For those wanting a serious conversion maybe this is not the best set up and the more expensive dedicated adjustable controllers are the way to go.
As for reliability the same set up is being run on the next c5alive outing and hopefully Bluebird will report back on how he gets on.

...testing a newly converted and modified c5 on its first ever proper run is usually interesting , but doing so in another country has to be a first ! Hopefully it will be enertaining in the best possible way 8)

I have been asked by several people how Goldfinger 24v conversion is going - my initial thoughts are thus :
We planned to do a conversion on a very limited budget to 'test' the water - we purchased a cheap 24v 350watt control for around £7 and a throttle for about £4 - the initial feeling was although slow on take off and struggling a little on hills ,for such a cheap price and having a good speed on the flat once run up, this would prove to be a good cheap solution.
Saturday showed the draw backs - a novice driver with out realizing was holding the front brake on full while also holding full throttle - although an extreme test you could liken this to a very steep hill with a larger c5 rider - the result was a burn out of the Mosfets and the control becoming inoperative.
With this in mind I would conclude that this paticular controller not really up to the job - I think the fact that it appears to have no thermal cut out or acceleration gain control makes it not suitable for C5'S - This is off cause a personal opinion. I intend to try some more controllers and give them some similar stressful conditions to see how they fair. Watch this space for updates.

Matt, Nice to know that at least in principle it worked. It may be better to look at a more expensive 24v +500 Watt version as some have +30A capability (approx £18-£47). Note that these do not utilise PWM (Pulse width modulation) for is speed control (as with the 4QD system at approx £120-£140).
In easy electrical calculations the standard C5 motor is a 250W at 12v but we know it operates at and is rated upto 29A. The normal calculation is 250W / 12v = 20.8A, but in realistic terms for power factor calculations is 250W / 12v =20.8A x 1.414 = 29.4A.
So for your 24v conversion to operate you need 29A / 1.414 = 20.5A x 24v = 492W.
I hope this helps as I am also looking at converting my 1st C5 to 24v but as this is potentially a big problem using these cheap alternatives.
I would like to know what you did in regard to the various electrical connections and also nice to see some photos. I am looking at adapting the existing wiring harness so that it can be easily changed back to a 12v version by simply unplugging the 24v bits.
Keep trying and keep others off your C5.

Cheers Plod will take a look - Lance thanks for your thoughts and a very valid point raised on the current capabilities - I have found another controller which does use PVM and is coming in around £25 - it is rated 480amps so may be just on the edge so we are looking into it.

Your point about switching back to 12v is also very good idea on two points -
1. if the control box does fail we can switch back to 12v to get home
2. it would allow us to switch back to road legal -
I did take out all the existing wiring and rewire from scratch because it was becoming 'cluttered' due to goldfingers gadgets i.e strobes ,indicators, sirens etc so i basically have a 12v circuirt running via a fuse box for the gadgets and a seperate 24v circuit - I will post some photo's at some point soon :) :)
The idea now is to use a 12v basic relay and switch circuit as Karl has sometimes done as our back up. Will keep you posted on progress.......... ;D ;D

Just picked up a 4qd controller secondhand on e-bay -.Its a 48v version (room for future experiments) and have converted it to run on 24v - its a uni 4 so may not have enough umph but gonna give it a go- hope to get it fitted over the weekend......... :)

Nice find. I have have just ordered the 4QD Uni 8 - 24v. As was not happy with the cheap alternatives following on from others experiences, so I have bit the bullet and gone safe............
I however looking at modifying to get the POD utilising LED's as close to a standard 12v original style.
Good luck with the mods and look forward to seing it running......

The trial's continue - have not had a lot of time to play with goldfinger due to 3 complete restorations but decided to quickly fit the 4qd uni 4 controller to see how it goes - please note that 4qd recommend the uni8 however as we picked this up on e-bay cheaply it was worth a shot :

Sadly the initial pull off and up hill performance was poor but great when up to speed and on the flat - the controller also became very hot so it's endurance must be questioned.
Bottom line is yes it is possible to do this on a budget put you will not get that feeling of initial power and have to be prepared for plenty of pedaling -
What next ..... To fit a basic 12v relay circuit for get home failures and Matt is saving up for a uni 8 - It's been a fun adventure but at the end of the day 'you pay your money - you take your chance' -- TBC............

Hi Matt & Marty, Like the look of the fuse carrier (can I ask were you got if from). The Uni 8 looks the same as the Uni 4. There must just be a few component changes to allow more current output. The Box is the same but has a thick ali block on the back.

Now fitted with a Uni 8 controller and performing very well - the mods continue - coming up - 24v display pod - motor temp display - upgraded brakes - chassis reinforcement and some form of cooling for the motor :) :) :)
