noisy grinding crank

Hi Folks,
How easy is it to fix a noisy grinding crank?  When I pedal one of my C5's it doesn't feel smooth and makes a grinding noise.  The other one is smooth and silent.
I am guessing the bottom bracket needs taking apart and fitting new bearings or such like, what do you think?  By the way I was told it has just had a new chain.  I was also told it had been given a full service, wouldn't this include renewing the bearings on a grinding crank?  Or at least trying to fix/grease it?
Cheers, Giles

Thanks very much, I'll ask my biking mates if they have the bootom braket tool.
