Title: Raleigh Grifter
Post by: Karl on 27, October, 2010 - 19:33:48
Got this off a friend at work;
(http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i257/1stbooboo/grifter.jpg)

...in need of light restoration, but all there  8)

Might take me a while to sort it out as I've a few c5 projects on the go, but I am looking forward to getting it back to its former glory  :).

Not sure what the stars and stripes model is , but this one was going begging because of a loft clearout  :P

I've been trawling through the 'net for some spares and noticed these guys;
 http://raleighgrifter.aceboard.com/

Looks like the Grifters have an owners site just like the c5's - and they go to Brooklands as well . I reckon we should have a joint meeting/road trip, can you imagine the reaction ? A convoy of c5's and Raleigh Grifters  ;D

this thread reminds me of a few years ago, i was in a neighbours, they were cb radio fans at the time.

a local lad aged about 15, not the brightest spark but harmless enough, had an Archer portable CB radio, and in the habit of walking the streets and talking over it to people, not having the punch to go to far.

so a conversation starts up and he says he has been doing mums shopping, blah blah, then said he had his shopping bag hung over his 'chopper'!

a stunned silence, get him to repeat and he doe's, so now we fear not being bright he might have been given some drugs or drink 'for a laugh' and is now buck naked, so we all shot out to find him.

after a brief search he was located, there he was in all his glory - fully clothed riding a Rayleigh Chopper, shopping over the handlebars.

i don't think we stopped laughing for several hours  ;D

Looking good matie  ;D - you might have started a new trend on here, photo's of us in our youth (only the clean stuff though !!).

Might have to dig out the old family album and see whats lurking within ...

I never got round to doing much with it, it was purchased as a Xmas pressie for my brother. Put some new tyres and brake blocks on it and that was about it ! He was well chuffed with it though  ;D

the one you posted in original pic was the first one i actually oned christmas 76, been on the look out for a few years now for a mk1 but always seem to be the later mk2's which i find

there were around 7-8 style of grifters mk 1 and mk2 then the supers being towards end of 83, then as you know the burner bmx's appeared along with c5's

then we went onto bikes and cars  and women  :D

now i am going back down the line

they come up on e bay regular mate, also grifter site sometimes has them up for sale,

unlike the chopper, grifters you can still pick them up reasonably cheap if needing a bit of work

The missus has an old grifter that's black with red metal mud guards. Is it any good?

Post by: mikegrifter on 10, February, 2011 - 19:02:57
there was only 2 black ones ever made the xl, the one i just bought, relatively cheap to buy, and the gs a bit rarer so may go for a bit more,

these were both around 82-83 as for what there worth depends on what people want to pay

post up pic if you like , will give you a better opinion once i see it

It's funny because maybe 5 years ago I bought a wethepeople bmx with the intention of riding on a night for exercise. I took one lap round the block then got off with my legs wobbling and burning. I thought bloody hell I used to live on my bike as a kid, it's been up the loft ever since  :P

After doing a deal with Karl, the silver Grifter is now mine  :) Wow they are heavy, how the hell we managed to jump about on them when we were kids ! Goes to show how my children are lucky with the light weight bmx's etc of today, I will be giving it a good clean, chrome polish and a new seat, decals, chain guard etc, Many thanks Karl, fantastic, love it ;)

I had the xl myslef when I was younger, my brother had the red mk1, so looking forward to cleaning mine up, I will be on the look for a plastic chain guard, a seat, some new decals and one of the handbrake lever plastic covers.
P.S Does the mk2 have the seat with the refector or not ?

hi

chain guard is one of the hardest items to source, loads of us after them, andy over on grifter forum is at moment trying to make replica ones....

decals easy to source .. ste sells them on grifter forum or another guy on e bay

plastic hoods can be tricky if you need one though you my get lucky

all the grifters had reflectors   mk 1 were metal backed  mk2 were plastic backed

if your thinking of a re spray vauxhall star silver is a perfect match  ;)
