Topic: Sqeaky groan from rear when coasting or pedalling

Hi guys,

My C5 has developed a regular (appears to happen with one revolution of the wheel - so happens more often when going faster and vice versa) sqeaky groan from somehwhere aroound the rear axle when I'm 'coasting' with the motor off or pedalling. I have had a look and nothing appears to be out of place/broken. I've re-adjusted the rear offiside wheel bearing and greased the nearside one and it's made no difference. Any ideas?

There is an additional bearing set attached to the rear axle found inside the black circular casing that holds the rear brake components. This bearing set is a friction fit on the end of the axle.

I'd be tempted to see if that is the culprit & needs replacing. It can be a bit of a niggly job coz you need to extract the rear axle from the c5 to get at the bearing and remove it.  A friend of mine at a local garage used a bearing press to seperate the axle from the bearing.

At the other end of the axle there are some roller bearings , giving them a good grease might help as well.

Thanks, I'll have a look over the weekend.

It's been in constant use since my birthday last week and it has covered 60 miles already this week so I wouldn't be surprised if the grease somewhere has worn off.

I'd be more surprised to find a c5 rear drum that isnt oval shaped

I've covered another 10 miles today and the noise was still there this morning but now it seems to have gone.

There does however appear to be a light irregular 'knock' coming from the bearing in the black brake clamp thingy - but this is only heard with it up in the air and under no load.

From what I've discovered in the past, dodgy bearings give more of a "crunchy" sound and feel...still worth taking a look though.

I covered 26 miles today and the noise isn't there anymore. So whatever it was has fixed itself, temporarily at least.

The noise appears to have returned. Maybe someone could have a look at it tomorrow?

It's not THAT loud! Just gets slighlty irritating after a while.

IT sounds like the bearings are worn out or the cone nut ..But we will take a look at it in the morning ..see you bye Chas

Chas had a look at this yesterday and greased the rear roller bearing in the cog that goes on the axle and the noise appears to have gone away now.
