Sounds like the problem is with the brushes so removing the motor to investigate further would seem the best option.

You are correct in that to remove the armature the gearbox has to come off.

These guides assume you have already removed the motor from the c5 ie rear wheel, drive belt and cogs out the way and motor leads disconnected from the control box.

All going good now.

I took the motor into a local electric motor service shop and they were able to fix it.
The brushes were stuck and also it needed cleaning.

Cost me $70 to repair.
