For the third year running we've been invited back to Brooklands awesome Vintage Cycle Event.
For those that haven't been yet here's another chance to take your own c5 onto the Mercedes Benz World test track, ride around the Museum site and even tackle the feared Test Hill.
Those that have been before will be able to tell you this is a premier event for us - check the links for previous years fun 8);

I intend to come, business commitments pemitting, and provided that I have it running under power by then
-
If it is any help, my sister resides near to Brooklands, if people want to foregather prior to motoring to the said Motor Course.
NB there is a humpback bridge and a long hill between her house and the track entrance and the roads are busy with fast moving horseless carriages so it would be inadvisable to convey ourselves by C5s to the Track.
I am reading The History of Brooklands Motor Course at the moment so please forgive the use of now unfashionable terminology.
Unless I can find a cycle path or similar, and which is also a shortcut.I shall survey next time I am down and report back.
-
Superb ;D
Nice idea, but we tend to convey ourselves, accompanied by our c5's , in our own horseless carriages direct to the venue. Upon arrival we set up the display area and then take part in the events as they unfold 8)
More details will be published nearer the time.
-
Please note that the Brooklands competitors wore silks in the racing colours of their entrants. NB this practice ceased in 1908, due in part to the invention of numbers. C5's are not the only vehicles to have competed there with weird steering arrangements: some vehicles had the steering wheels above the drivers line of vision because the owners simply removed the road bodywork and fitted low bucket seats for racing without troubling to lower the steering column to facilitate easy re-installation of the road bodywork.
If you are at all concerned about your safety competing on this high speed track, perhaps you might consider copying one of the pioneers by sitting on a piece of carpet tied to the fuel tank (in our case the battery so that the high back rest and framework could be disposed of to save weight and drag) and securing yourself to the dashboard via straps attached to the trouser belt( this gentleman did take the trouble to wear what was described as a stout belt)
-
Lady drivers at Brooklands would never dream of showing their ankles(or they wouldn't be real ladies).Cord fastened around voluminous skirts sufficed for far greater speeds than a C5 would achieve( but they didn't have to pedal of course)
-
My C5 runs now, at least for the drive asround my locality, so I am intending to come to this event. When we we know more details?
-
...When we we know more details?
...usually towards the end of August.
The event has been placed on their website calendar so is still going ahead.

-
I will be there again, and a friend will be coming in from Heathrow, via USA to see the event.
Looking forward to this one again.

Do we have to make individual formal entries? Whaty kind of helmet is required- a cycle one or an MSA approved crash helmet?
-
Do we have to make individual formal entries? Whaty kind of helmet is required- a cycle one or an MSA approved crash helmet?
As per previous years I will be arranging the entry tickets, and a basic cycle helmet is sufficient.
The full instructions will be posted here in a few weeks :)
-
I took the opportunity to have a chat with Donna at Brooklands about this event.
As per previous years, we will need to be on site for around 9am on the Sunday morning giving us time to get the display area all set up before the gates open to the public at 9.30
I will need to get an idea of numbers attending for our entry passes, so now seems as good a time as any to start the list off 8)
So let me know if you intend to come along, join in with the track event and display your c5!
On the list so far (pending updates !) ;
Me
Angie
Coverman
Ray (plus 1)
Andy
Marty (plus 3)

Or neither.. you know how these things are!
-
As much as i fancy coming along, have to say no for now.
The Estima has decided it needs new front brake pads and a new exhaust, and i don't think it'll all be sorted in time :-\

Won't be the same without you mate...but I understand the need to allocate your resources !
A few more have put their names forward so hopefully we'll have a decent show of C5's :)
The only reason we need the list is so that I can obtain some free entry passes for us. If you're not on the list it doesn't mean you can't come along - you'll just have to pay at the gate .
-
Hi there Karl put my name down will you ..bye Chas
-
Hi Karl, Sign me up as well please, plus another. Regards, Kurt.
-
Chas & Kurt are now both on the updated list.
I'll need to close the list soon and send the numbers off to Brooklands, so if you want to take part & display your c5 at the event let me know asap.
-
Closing date for the free entry tickets is Monday 23rd August , when I'll be contacting Brooklands to let them know how many we're going to need. After that date you'll need to pay to get in.
As with previous years, the tickets will be issued at the gate on the day of the event. We will be using the Campbell Gate to access the site, shown as entry point 2 on the directions;
http://www.brooklandsmuseum.com/index.php?/your-visit/how-to-get-here/
What with the penny farthing racing, c5's on the track and the debut of the c5000, it should be another superb day out. Really looking forward to it 8)
-
I was on your original list so I presume I still am on your current list.
I am still searching for a Brooklands silencer for the C5,they became compulsory as long ago as 1924 and yet none of the exhaust fitting places even list one for the C5.

Looking like it's gonna be a good one !!! :) :D - Are they doing the Micro scooters this year ?

Whats this about microscooters? Are these the small wheeled petrol engined ones? If so, I'll bring my Viza.
-
They had a kiddies race with the push ones last time my eldest loved it - sorry not the motor type.

I t may or may not be of interest to know that an elecric vehile raced at Brooklands in 1926 in a Short Handicap event(this title describes the nature of the race, not the drivers' problems). The electric "racer" was a truck used on railway stations to move freight, and it was ballasted with 2 tons of wet sand in bags and given aprroximately a one and a half hour start over the proper racing cars, which were some of the fastest of the day.The electric vehicle managed a 5mph standing start lap which to everyone's surprise translated into 5.5 mph approx mph flying laps as they thought the vehicle would slow down as the batteries lost charge(which proves my point about batteries being heavier when filled with electricity-NOT) and this Greenbat truck actually won the event by 32 seconds. To prevent boredom of the crowd whilst the handicap time ticked slowly away, the racing cars practiced cornering on an unusedn of the track.
on another part of the track
-
I have the tickets and will arrange for someone to be at the gate to hand them out.
The Brooklands organisers ask that we all be on site and set up ready by 09.30am when the gates are open to the public. Sorry for the early start, even more so for those travelling from further afield.
The itinerary has not yet been published...I'll post the details once I have them - but it may be similar to last year where we get told on the day :)
Hopefully the weather will settle down for a nice sunny day on Sunday :)
-
From the Brooklands site, the programme of events;
September 12th 2010
Cycle Festival ;Accompanied children bringing a scooter and a crash hat will be admitted to the Museum free of charge and there will be a scooter race for children aged 5-12 years at 11 o'clock.
At midday, Sinclair C5s, Raleigh Choppers and bicycles will attempt the famous Brooklands Test Hill.
From 2-4pm there will be C5 demonstrations and the Brooklands Handicap Race for bicycles on the track at Mercedes-Benz World. Raleigh Choppers will also be in action on the track.
Entry for bicycles and support vehicles will be via the Campbell Gate off Brooklands Road. Public parking will be in the Museum car park accessed via Mercedes-Benz World.
Just a reminder guys - Don't forget your cycle helmet if you want to take a c5 onto the Mercedes Benz Test Track
I'm aiming to be at the site for around 8.15am...see you at the gate if you get there early :D
The weather forecast looks ok for Sunday , so fingers crossed we are in for another superb day.
-
whoops i don't have one, hard hat ok?
Alan
-
whoops i don't have one, hard hat ok?
Alan
Don't know, but I doubt it....the insurance requirement is for a cycling helmet to be worn so (I'm guessing) it's unlikely a hard hat will acceptable. They won't allow you on the track if they're not happy ,and as they're only about £6 from Tesco, it might be worth picking one up.
If not, a motorcycle helmet was ok last year .
-
Thanks for the heads up Karl, as I would have forgot to bring one.
Retro Andy.
-
Here is the list of what spares/accessories I'm bringing along, and for whom;
radioMarty : two sets of chassis screws ,plus 1 dead battery

plod: one set of brushes, one set rear light screws and one set of rear tyres
chas: one set rear tyres

Must be one of those day's : Tried and tried in vain to fit two adults, two children, one C5 and the C2.5
into the Zafira but no joy - Will have to leave the wife - opps I mean the C2.5 at home :( - I then took the restored C5 I am bringing along for a test drive and got a puncture ! - then picked up the scooter for Matt and the wheel fell off (if anyone has one he can borrow we would much appreciate it) so I am looking forward to a better day tomorrow - see you there. :)
-
Looks like we are still on for this, but we may be later than 9:30
If thats the case, will we sitll be "allowed" in the c5 paddock?

A real shame the c2.5 isnt going to make it as I was really looking forward to seeing that .
Matt can use my scooter for the scooterthon, no worries ;)

It may well cause problems, the Brooklands staff aren't keen on cars driving through when the site is open to the public. Plus, I'll be leaving the gate area (with the tickets) to join in the event... all I can suggest is that you call me when you get there to see what we can arrange.
-
Ok Karl not to worry I will try to get there as early as possible! Hopefully meeting up with Martin to convoy from this side of the world :)

A DEAD BATTERY ALSO FOR ME !!!

Got home a lot quicker than I got there!
What an awesome day out. So many C5s, lots of new faces, lots of fun.
I didnt take any pics at all, but I hope those of you who did pics and or videos will upload some!
Seeing the C-5000 was amazing, it just ate the hill for breakfast. The test track was good fun.
Great to see you all!
Mike

ElectricDave unleashed the c-5000, RadioMarty took "Challenger" up Test Hill and Jim with his bionic legs powered a standard 12v c5 "over the top" - some amazing sights ;D
Matt was happy to bag a large box of jelly babies for his efforts in the scooterthon, and then enjoyed a tussle in "Voodoo" racing against retroAndy in "challenger"...all good fun.
It was good to see c5martin make an appearance and above all else, it was great to see so many from c5alive turn up and support this event. Brooklands staff were impressed, so thanks guys ;)
Hope you all enjoyed the day as much as I did ;D
-
Had a great day - good to meet so many new face's and a fantastic turn out - 25 C5's I think help celebrating 25 years - Thanks to Boo Boo for the loan of challenger which made the test hill a breeze :) - Matt is all VooDoo up !!!! - not forgeting Mike's no nails gearbox !! -an all round fun day - will post some pics tomorrow and get Matt to make one of his vids. Great fun :D
-
Brilliant day all round, nice to meet lots of new faces.
Some pics and video to follow shortly.
Great day , best one so far .....
Fantastic gearbox with the "No more nails" filling, beats grease anyday ....

Some great piccies there mate 8)
Must admit, that dodgy gearbox was shocking :o, guess you have to be really careful buying stuff off Ebay ::)
It was a crying shame the penny farthings and raleigh choppers didn't make it this year, hopefully they'll come along to next years event. On a happier note, I had a chat with Donna at Brooklands about placing the spectators nearer to the action next year so we won't have the same problem of being miles away ! Plus, due to there being far fewer cycles this year, our C5's benefitted by being given twice the track time of previous years ;D
The most humbling aspect of it all though was just how far people were willing to travel to support us, not least the marvellous gent who travelled from the Netherlands just to see us. Top respect to that man 8) (hopefully Chas sorted him out for the parts he was after !).

What a fantastic day, one to remember, really loved "Challenger" it was so much fun, thanks very much Karl & Angie for letting me loose in him, it was nice to see so many C5's together, the trip home was good 2 and a 1/2 hours. I still had such a grin on that my noodles kept falling out of mouth eating my tea :D
Retro Andy.
-
Great to meet you all yesterday. Very enjoyable and a great venue to have it at. Found myself sitting in the captains seat on that brilliantly jaded VC10 chatting to the old guy who used to be the flight engineer on one. Only fly in the ointment was that the M23 was closed both ways on the way back so had to go along the old A23!
I must spend more time tidying and cleaning up mine as everyone elses looked in so much better condition. Hope to meet you at a possible South coast meeting soon.
-
Glad everyone seems to have enjoyed the day & got home ok 8)
We avoided the M23 gridlock and took j9 of the m25 to go home via Boxhill,Reigate etc to Crawley. Nice scenic route that ,much to our surprise, wasnt busy at all.
Here are a few more piccies that have been sent to me as not everyone seems to be able to cope with photobucket ;D
These have been sent from Keith - the c5 owning Brooklands gent with the microphone ;

Once again a great event with purfect weather.
Took me 3 hours to get home but unfortunatly, not intact? LOL.
-
Not Intact - what happened Ray ?
-
Oh No Ray ! Don't say the Ubmobile got damaged ?
Retro Andy.
-
Great day out. Really enjoyed it thanks-especially the using of the test track.
-
Sounds like you all had a really nice time, and the weather to match.
Had a look at the pics / footage of the C5000 .... excellent piece of machinery ;D
I've missed this show twice now so really must try and get there next year :D
Daz
-
Yes,I got home and started to unload the Ubmobile, and found the boot was missing.LOL.
I should have removed it,but was not thinking straight.
I have an old one but it needs a liner and key lock.
So If anyone has a spare and is also comming to my October Norfolk Run,I would apreciate it.
-
Oh! Bugger!
Sorry to hear about that Ray, hope you find a replacement. Not worth retracing your steps back to brooklands then? :)
-
Hi Iv just uploaded a video from Brooklands to youtube .Could not get it onto photobucket due to it being to long ...As you will see the camera falls down onto it's side for a while ..But it's ok ..

-
Hi there Mike tried to email it but it's to long ..will post .Bye Chas
-
Well done Chas :) good footage
-
Loved the movie footage 8)
Gives everyone a real taste of what the track was like :)
-
.........So If anyone has a spare and is also comming to my October Norfolk Run,I would apreciate it.
Ray - I have the boot liner left over from the Challenger project, I'll bring it along for you in October.
It is a bit tatty (as was the rest of the c5 that evolved into "Challenger") but should tide you over until something better comes along ;)
-
Great Karl,thanks a lot.

Big thank you to Karl and Angie, especially for the loan of Money Pit so Shirley could take part on the track event. We both really enjoyed ourselves and Shirley has even signed up for the web site and may be convinced to come back for more (possibly even her own C5 ?). Jetpac unfortunately suffered an electrical fault just before the track event but I am sure I will have it fixed soon when I get a spare moment and parts.
SG:- I think it's the capacitator myself!
