Title: The first c5alive meeting abroad - The Netherlands 8th/9th/10th July 2011
Post by: Karl on 24, November, 2010 - 20:38:58
I've been toying with the idea of holding a c5alive run in The Netherlands for some time now and think 2011 should be the year we arrange it. There was support for this at the recent wiring kit weekend, and Frankev has volunteered to be our man on the ground with the local knowledge, so it is looking good so far.

Having never organised a c5alive trip abroad before, I'm sure the costs and logistics will take some sorting out. I plan to divert some funds received from items purchased from the c5alive shop side towards this to help reduce the costs , but obviously there will be expenses to be met by all those coming along. Closer to the date (still to be set ! ) we will need to discuss deposits etc.

I think the first item to sort out is ; who wants to come along ? After that we can ask Frank to suggest a suitable venue and then work out if we want to use camping or hotel facilities etc. Transporting the c5's also needs to be discussed.

Lots to sort out, but I'm looking forward to it  8)

Perhaps you could ask Sinclair Research to sponsor you?

 ???

Stranger things have happened.

Looking at my shift rota for next year (always subject to change  ::)), the first suggested dates for this are ;

weekend - 8th/9th/10th July

Will this fit in okay for everyone else who wants to come along ? Hopefully a weekend is the best option for most of us.

Assuming the date is ok, next up will be the location. Hopefully somewhere nice and flat, with cycle lanes away from trafffic as much as possible and a circular route of about 12-15miles.  Good scenery and sites of interest are always good, plus if there's a trransport related event we could hook up with that would be a nice bonus as well  :)

Open to suggestions on this bit  ;D

Hi Everybody,

I am trying with Karl to get you all to the Netherlands in July. The neighborhood where I live is called the Achterhoek and there are really fabulous smooth miles and miles of bicycle roads through the valley of the river the Ijssel, the Veluwe, a national park, most roads open for bicycles only, and the Achterhoek, a century's old agricultural area with lots of old city's and where it is easy to make a twelve castles route of about 12 miles.
Best of all, it is basically flat in holland so it could be a very relaxed weekend or day or whatever. I wil try to find sponsors, and I already have some Dutch C5 fanatics and I'm trying to find some Germans to ( one hour drive), to make it an international event. Even Denmark is only 8 hours driving from here. Open for suggestions.
Hope to get a lot of response.

Greetings

Frank

Frank - That all sounds really good so far  8) To help us decide what sort of accomodation to go for, can you hazard a guess as to how much camping or hotels would cost in that area ?
Title: Re: The first c5alive meeting abroad - The Netherlands 2011
Post by: frankev on 28, November, 2010 - 13:26:00
Give me a few days, an old friend from school from my wife, has a mini camping.
I'll go and talk with him about friendly prices etc. Hotels the same, no old friends but always interested in getting groups and willing to change the price therefore, (maybe sponsoring an event like ours a little). I used to own a bar/disco in town here, so I know quit a lot of local people that might find sponsoring worth their while. 8) ;)
Any information/conformation about the dates, the amount off people etc. is welcome.

The prices of the hotels are coming this week, I made them enthusiastic for the P.R value of a meeting like ours. The camping I was talking about is closed now, the owner is on a holiday  :D
But with this snow and harsh temperatures it is not the first place to stay I am looking into.
The Burton Car Company, the factory that converts citroen 2CV cars into retro looking sportscars with wingdoors etc. has also made an electric version of the car. They are planning to market this next year. The owner Iwan Göbel has invited us to visit the factory where we can get a tour as well as a lecture about the latest state of electric cars and the development of it.
http://www.burtoncar.com/   and   http://www.telegraaf.nl/binnenland/7621946/__Elektrische_sportwagen_onthuld__.html.
Most likely we can get a intimate look inside this 250Kwh engine.

More to follow.
The eight castle route nearby has many electrical charging points http://www.routeyou.com/location/view/47420113/oplaadpunt-elektrische-fiets.nl
I am working on this route> http://www.routeyou.com/route/view/56611/fietsroute-jumbo-route-55-graafschap-kastelen-landgoedroute.nl this route is about 32 miles so I am shortening it to about 20 miles max.
And I have already made a great route of 25 km's (17 miles) that brings us to Bronkhorst.
The smallest town in holland, town rights since 1190 where we cross the river the IJssel by ferry and back to Zutphen through centuries old agricultural landscape.
I am also working on visits to restaurants where we can get special arrangements in combination with media attention. Also all these routes have 220 volts charging points for E-Bikes.

That sounds really good Frank, thanks for putting in so much work on this project. It all looks great and is shaping up to be an excellent run.

I'll keep in touch via email regarding some of the other logistical stuff we'll need to sort out, but for now I've set the date as the weekend of July 8/9/10 2011.

Once Christmas is over we can start confirming who wants to come and how much it will cost etc.

Cost will be a deciding factor for lots of us I know, but it's a bit like the chicken and the egg - the more people who want to come along then hopefully the cheaper it will be. If we choose camping it would probably be cheaper than a hotel, but if the weather turns unpleasant then a hotel would be more comfortable. Then again, some might be put off by the thought of camping ? Plus there is transportation to consider, maybe it would be best if we all just met up at the venue in The Netherlands. This gives an idea of some of the things we need to sort out.

In the meantime, Frank is doing a superb job of organising and suggesting venues for this run. After the Christmas break we will need to make some firm decisions as to what we want to do in order to give Frank sufficient time to get the ball rolling.

This has the potential to be the most exciting event we've ever staged, and definitely one to get involved in  8).

Hi Lancelot,

According to my routeplanner we are talking about 113 Km's. About 1hr 24 min by car, 6 hours by C5.  ;). The plan is to come to Zutphen, where the entire neighborhood is bicycle friendly. All of the bicycle roads are paved smoothly, and the people are friendly!  ::)
We have forests (Veluwe), the beautiful river valley of the IJssel and the "Achterhoek" with many old mansions and Castles. And everything is flat. The region is willing to cooperate to promote itself so prices will be depending on the number of participants, I have four C5's out of Holland this far, and still waiting for more, also C5 drivers out of any other country are more then welcome.
Karl (BooBoo) is coordinating the british participating drivers, but as it looks till now, we can count on maybe 15 C5's.
But plans still have to get shaped and we hope there will be more attending the first ever International Sinclair C5 meeting. Complimentary T-shirt and sticker of-course. You can't drive around in your C5 after this event without them  ;D. We also have an invitation to come to visit the Burton Car Company. They are introducing a 250 Kwatts electric Burton Car this year and like to give us a tour in their facility. That could make a nice photo-shoot. 250 watts versus 250 Kwatts. But the real advertising of the event starts shortly, so this far, no complaints.

Greetz, and hope to see you in Juli,

Frank

Frank is certainly putting in the hours on this, which is much appreciated.

I'm hoping the amount of people interested in attending this will grow, but for now I'd like to start a list of who wants to come along just to give us an idea of numbers. This can be updated and amended as necessary;

Frank (plus 4 )
Karl
Angie
Jordan (plus 1 ?)
Steve
ElectricDave

Anyone else ?

Did I already mention that Zutphen is very aged old "Hanze" city, witch is beautifully restored and famous for his old towers? Almost a museum where people live in. Lots of bars, coffeeshops  ;) and restaurants. Nice for the wife as well, a big city center with lots of boutique's.

Good man Alwin, be great to see you there. I'm hoping a few more forum members will be confirming & adding their names soon. I will be going over to visit Frank and view the venue in the next few weeks, also to help work out costs etc. as the ferry and fuel costs will obviously be a factor in how many people choose to come along. Once we have some figures to play with it should help increase the numbers.

Hi Max and Tony, the famous coffee shop the "Pelikaan"(http://lh3.ggpht.com/_za9Q6sbThGc/TTGKrmoHjKI/AAAAAAAABVc/KkjIAZ2ewv8/pelikaan.jpg) is centuries old and serves a price winning cup of coffee, they burn and prepare it themselves (twice dutch champion in last ten years) and they serve many different kinds of tea as well but to prevent disappointments, the other three coffee-shops I mentioned earlier are the other kind.
The kind where you can sit down and smoke, although to be honest, they do serve great espresso there as well.  ;)

I like to give you all an extra reason to come to the Holland meeting in July and therefore I have to give you all a little history lesson.(from hear say)
Sinclair introduced the C5 in the Netherlands in 1985. The RDW, the organization in Holland that tests and gives or denies new vehicles the road-legal status, didn't know what to do with the Sinclair,  ??? ???(no E-Bikes in those days) so all of the original imported C5's where treated by the customs as bikes. They just cut al the engine wires  :'( and allowed it on the road as Bikes. After the Sinclair factory stopped producing them, as well as the Sinclair ZX, a dutch business man bought the hole stock of Sinclair. :o
After deliverance of all the stuff he expected to have his warehouse full of computers.
There where 400 boxes as well that, after opening, to his suprice, had Sinclairs C5's in them, instead of computers. He was supplying computer-stores so he sold some but gave the major lot of them away to computer-stores as Eye-catchers. So in Holland you can find a lot off C5's that never have been driven, stored away, not very interesting items for the people here. As a bike it was a lot of heavy pedaling. So nobody was very interested.
Now the law has changed and since a few years there is an official E-Bike legislation.
The C5 is road legal now. I am going to try to go on television to invite all those people that still have, never used Sinclairs in store houses or on attics, to sell them on our meeting or put them in the auction. Don't know or I can make it happen but sure I'm going to try. So if I can pull this off, I expect a lot off, unused parts and completely new C5's during our meeting. I did collect quite some parts already but still looking for a lot more.  ;)
So for all of you that are looking for those missing, hard to find parts, or are interested in obtaining a original C5 this event might be very interesting as well.
Uptil now, nice looking, hardly or never used Sinclairs are going for between 150 euro and 600 euro. Depending on extra's etc.  (125 GBP and 500 GBP) Times are changing and it is getting more popular by the day.
So it is now or never.

Hope to see a lot of you all in July.

greetz

Frank

Radio Marty,

Up till now I only have a response from a quite luxurious resort. Euro 42,50 per night per person. On base of half pension. Incl. shower, toilet, television and free internet etc.on room (about GBP38,50) Including use of Swimming-pool, Sauna, and reduced price for the use of tennis and bowling facilities.
Since I have the Invitations and posters for the meeting ready now I have appointments this week with two other hotels for special prices for us as a group.
There is a strange situation going on, I need to know how much persons are joining to get special rates, and people are waiting for prices before they know or they want, or can join us.(What was first, the chicken or the egg situation)
So I am working on cheaper rates than the offer that I have right now, Which is a decently reduced price already.
So, if I have success it is going to be cheaper than this. I'll do my best. 8)

sure you use the right E-mail address? see profile page.

Karl - any idea what time you are planning to leave on the Friday - im trying to juggle my shifts about  :)

I've reserved a space for you and Matt on the "bus" ,I'm planning on booking a crossing for around 12 noon so we'll need to leave my place in Crawley around 0900 .

The 4x4 and trailer will be going the Harwich-Hook of Holland route and will be leaving much earlier around 5am to get to Harwich on time. Although you're not "booked" to go in the 4x4, it is carrying all the luggage and, more importantly, all the c5's. If you can't get down on the Thursday night it might be an option to bring your c5's down earlier  ? Drop me an email and see what we can sort out.

The latest update on this trip.

So far I have booked the ferry crossing for the trailer and my 4x4 plus myself , electricDave and Scott. We will be going the Harwich to Hook of Holland route ,reducing the amount of time spent motoring.

The second vehicle ,to be driven by Steve, will go via the Eurotunnel meaning we can delay booking that for a little while longer. This will be a shorter sea crossing but a longer road trip.

We still need to book the hotel accommodation and have settled on the Inntel at Zutphen;
 http://www.inntelhotelsresortzutphen.nl/

..I have spoken with the reservations desk at this hotel and obtained a provisional quote of 66euros per room per night. This may be reduced if more people attend - but if we leave it too long and more rooms are booked up while we wait - then the cost may increase. I would like to book the rooms on Monday 11th April, so if you're thinking of coming along with us then please decide very soon.

If you leave it until after I've made the bookings it doesn't mean you can't come along, just that you will need to make all your own arrangements.

I phoned Frank as well to sort out any other arrangements that needed discussing and we have agreed for all those taking part in the run to make a contribution of 15 euros towards a lunch on the Saturday and a souvenir from the trip. You know, I really fancy this trip. My C5 should be back on the road within a week and what better maiden trip than a few days in the Netherlands?

I'll have to do a bit of research into crossings & prices and make a decision within the next couple of days.

Making good progress on this now  8)

Ferry crossing booked for the 4x4 and trailer, so transport arrangements for all the c5's for seven of us are sorted.

Hotel accommodation now booked with deposit paid.

Just the eurotunnel crossing to sort for Steves car and remaining passengers then we're all set. Tony and family are arranging their own crossing etc but will be joining us for the run and staying at the Hotel.

If anyone else does decide to join in and wants to stay at the same place just drop me an email and I'll forward the necessary info to make a booking. You will need to sort your own transport though.

Looks like it's going to be a great trip. I nipped over to France the other day - we took the car on the train for the first time. What a great easy way to cross the channel! We'll definitely be doing it again sometime.
Unfortunately I can't get over to the Netherlands for this trip (no way to transport the C5) but if it's successful then fingers crossed something similar will be arranged next year.

I really hope to make it an annual event as well.
In Holland, since it is a bike here, you are aloud to take your C5 into the train with you.(buy ticket for it)
And a roofrack does the trick as well.

Hello everybody,

About the meeting in Zutphen, the Netherlands, 8, 9 & 10 july 2011.
Everybody is very welcome to attend, it looks, with 23 Sinclairs attending till now, to become a major event. I would like to put a few little items to your attention.
To make it a smooth event and a memorable one, I would like to ask everybody who is attending for a small financial input.
If you attend both runs, Saturday and Sunday (till 14.00 hr) I ask for a contribution of 15 Euro. If you only attend on one day I ask 12 Euro.
Why I do this is for the following reason. Everybody that joins a run gets the special Coffee or Tea mug.
And I want to organize a picknick during each run, so I like to pamper you all, so we can concentrate on the (fun)run.
Also, I have two stickers for everybody, one to stick on the boot off your Sinclair and one for you to keep, collect or put on E-Bay  ;)
So I would like some feedback from all off you. Do you think its a fair price?
Or would this financial sacrifice be a reason for you, not to join?
I would also like to make T-Shirts off the event but it turns out that they would cost about 13 euro each.(printing in color on both sides)
I can order them, but I don't know how many of you would like to have one and I don't know your sizes.
Please, if you know you are coming over, send me your address (not E-mail)
so I can send you some info and material in advance. So please send this to me or to Booboo. (E mail addresses at the member section)
Well, looking forward to meet you all, open for suggestions,

greetz

Frank

Extra info about the Meeting in Holland.

I used a few days to get a collective insurance ( for damage inflicted to others) for all people that come along for the runs in Zutphen at 9 and 10 july 2011.
This is very hard. Especially because a lot of you are coming from abroad.
Since the insurance companies only work with ready made packages and are not willing to improvise or cooperate (except for very high hour-rates)I would like you all to take care off a insurance yourself. I think you call it a liability insurance. Maybe it is already included in your travel insurance. Look into it.
If you take an insurance overhere it will cost you about £ 1.70 for a month but this is only for people that live here. And remember, the runs are in a weekend so the insurance companies are closed then.
No panic. i planned the run over very smoothly bicycle roads and since the Sinclair is soft outside and most owners are very careful with their 26 year old C5, nothing is likely to go wrong but I can not accept liability for you all.

But as far as the rest is concerned. It is looking good, better every day.

This first netherlands run has to be a contender for the best ever meeting we've held.

Frank did an excellent job in creating a two day event that had something for everyone to enjoy - stately homes, windmills, breathtaking scenery, locks & canals, picnics in the forests, a stork village, a car factory , excellent bike lanes, top hotel and very friendly group of people , a penny farthing rider taking part - and we got a free mug  8) What more could you ask for   ;D ?

Zutphen itself is a real gem, being an incredibly pretty place with lots to see and do .Sitting by the fountain enjoying the cafe culture was a memorable treat in itself. The Hotel was incredible being helpful in storing the c5's and looking after our needs, good food ,nice rooms and amazing facilities - swimming pool, bowling, tennis courts etc etc - and a couple of bars to keep Scott happy. :D

The runs themselves were completed without any real drama, oddly enough there always seems to be one fault that crops up on every run that then goes on to repeat itself. Sometimes its punctures or wheel bearings - for this trip it was chain tensioner clips ! Three fell off making cable tie bodges the required skill of the day. Despite completing two quite lengthy runs, the c5's coped really well - although a few cases of chain slip and belt slip were evident at the end  ;D

16 c5's took part, with only one failure that was recovered home just 1 mile from the finish. Due to an overtight chain the axle was pinching its bearings each end - and actually caused the axle to heat up to a point it melted the motor mount (the metal was too hot to touch !)  :o So, if you have to make a choice , stick with chain slip rather than overtighten the chain !!

Given that the c5's are now over 26years old they all coped really well.

A massive thank you to Frank for sorting out the logistics and arranging everything and a huge thank you for everyone who took part - it was a superb weekend and one to be repeated again next year.

Some photo's to follow  8)

Hi Mike DX and Minidaz,

Our forum member Quasimodo  8) is working as a scoot-mobile designer.
He took a 750 watt scoot-mobile engine, 2011 electronics and fitted this in a Sinclair C5. If you look at his introductionpage here at the forum, you can see the creation taking place.
It is a Sinclair that, if you open the throttle, spins on both back wheels. Lookes like he could do a wheely if he wanted.  :o :o. It lost its pedals, but can drive backwards just as easy. Has both handgas as well as a footpedal throttle, Cruise control, etc. and if I remember right it works on 48 volts.
We like to refer to it as the Sinclair C5 2.0(beta)!
We (Wuppert, Quasimodo and me) would like to spent some time together to build a new C5 that keeps the good old stuff and has the 2011 state of the art technique 8) This century seems ready for a C5 successor.
That was just one off the amazing things I have seen this weekend. Much more to follow. ;D

Sorry Mike. The Sinclair version 2.0 is still a idea only. So Mike, be patient. We will keep the forum up to date concerning our C5upgrade. Your interest in this prototype is noted so we will keep you informed if we succeed.

My c5's are all back home and sorted so no worries there, hopefully yours is also back together as well - if not, you know where to come for any help you might need.

If you've any pictures from the event please feel free to add them here , it will be nice to look back later in the year and reflect on how much fun we had.

You need to create a photbucket account, upload to there and then paste the link into mesage on here.

As Plod says, we use a picture hosting service such as photobucket or Flickr etc .

I prefer photobucket as it is so easy to use, here's the instructions I placed in the forum guide;

 Using photobucket

1) log into your own photobucket account

2) place your cursor onto the picture you wish to post within the topic on this forum, you will see four options appear

3)  right click & copy the fourth/bottom option (IMG code)

4) paste the link into the posting

Your picture should now feature in the forum posting.

Remember, if you move or delete the picture within your photobucket account then it will automatically be deleted from this forum.

Hi April and Thom,

Nice to see that you have found the way to the forum. I had a little holiday to France so I could not respond before.
I use Picassa webalbums to upload my pictures to the forum and since you and Thom where quite active photographing it would be nice to see the result of that.
I also think that it was great that you and Thom did find us on route and it was a pleasant surprise to meat more Sinclair C5 drivers on the go!
I also have a lot of pictures that would fill these pages up and therefor, here is the link to them. I tried to get everybody on the photo's so if you see a picture, just copy and paste it to your own computer.

Did you see how well the colors of the storks match the C5 colors :P

Greetz and hopefully to next year.

Frank

Ps I was thinking about taking my Sinclair C5 with me to France, glad I did not do it. I wouldn't have survived the first five minutes on the French roads!
They really drive "different" overthere :o :o :o :o

Hi BooBoo,

Smart farmer! Here is it a big hit. Everybody can play and its cheap!
You should tell this farmer about cow cuddling. You can go into the field and cuddle with a friendly cow. This is a big commercial success as well because it gives a intense inner rest. City folks love it!
