Title: C5 School presentation for Business Studies Class
Post by: Lancealot on 08, May, 2011 - 17:12:18
Hi all,

Last week I went to a local school for a friend who is the Business Studies teacher. She asked if I could talk about the C5 and show a C5 so the pupils could do a study of a successful failure.

Photos & description attached, it also got into the local newspaper.

They all seemed to have a good time.

I Have been asked to do something similar next year for a couple of local radio /Electronics clubs.

Getting very popular - the C5.....

Its amazing the amount of people who have never seen one up close, i know a lot of people were not born then, but even those who were have only seen it on the TV or in news articles and it was always shown in a bad light.

Most are very impressed when then they get to see one or have a go in one ....

No guesses why they are shown in a bad light-they are no more relevant today to safe reliable transport than they were then.

maybe, maybe not - we now have those cycle lanes that were only a promise back in 1985  :)

i would also add, the pressure on goverment to improve junctions for cyclists is also gathering apace. while we need no test or training to ride a bike casualties will not be reduced. the times i see cyclist flash through red lights, not give way to pedestrian crossings and if you dare bib your horn, you invite a rightious lambasting.

another thread in here pointed out the leagle kerb weight restriction, if you think deeper it was one if the main reasons for the early of the C5 as design had to get under this restriction.

any epweight increase could have allowed a higher degree of both safety and durability, through better batteries, motor, brakes, lights, wheels - need i go on?

perhaps it should be suggested to the students, to allow them to enjoy green fun transport, these limitations should be adjusted in the current fuel and climatic times?

There is a fundamental problem with concept which is rather difficult to overcome:viz a prone cycle is necessarily low hence inherently invisible to larger vehicles. Making it higher with larger wheels would increase instability dramatically and would of necessity tax aerodynamics . Putting a roof on would challenge the weight limit and raise the C of G. The reason that the C5 was ridiculed initially was that everyone except Sinclair could instantly see that it was extremely dangerous to use on the road. The engineering design faults became apparent later and would probably have swamped Sinclair in warranty claims if the firm had survived.

I feel much safer in the C5 than on a bike - probably because it's rare everyone notices it. Perhaps if they were everywhere it would be more dangerous.  8)

Thanks all,

I have been asked to do it again but this time will be taking two of them (Standard 12v) as my 24v conversion is still on hold. Saving up for some thing special........
