Hi all just got my C5 working for its first run and had to wait until today (1.1.11) especially as the snow has just gone in Manchester!!!!!

Looks really good, well done, really like the wall brackets to keep it on, will have to do something like that for mine to make room in the garage for the X1 when it comes.

No only joking, takes two of us to lift off without touching the white body. Getting to old to lift on my own.

That explains a lot. In my case, my kids are to young ;D ;D
guess I should try to make it so it works like an elevator. I do have an old 24 V engine here somewhere.

Hi all,
This was my first C5 and at the time when I bought it I only cleaned it up, regressed bearings and got it up a running. It has been used for the last 6 months continiously.
Now that I have two others that have been fully restored I have decided to do a full refurb on this one and make it 24v. I have started to strip it down and have ordered the 4QD Uni 8 controller with twist throttle grip (Thanks Chas for the info).
I will be looking at modifying their condition meter board so that it works within the normal POD. Now to look at using the feedback from the twist throttle to utilise the power side (anyone done similar as don't want to have digital displays).
I will also be looking at a different gearbox / chain drive (unless dragon technology works) as will be looking at a 36v turbo type button but we will see....................

I have asked a mate of mine if its possible to design a board that will replace the POD PCB with and exact same size PCB to work with a 24 /36 volt mod, using two driver chips to just give current and volts.
He says it can be done, and would use the led bar graphs from the existing pod.
But thats all it will indicate, just amps and volts....
Will let you all know how this gets on ...

...that sounds like a sensible compromise and more than suitable 8) If he can get them running I'd definitely have a couple of those for future restoration projects as it would keep the original look but help with reliability. Hope he can pull it off :)

If it can be done he can do it, it would work with just the relay configuration as well.
I will be seeing him next week, i have sent him all the tech stuff on C5 circuits etc so will let you how it goes.
Is there a circuit for the relay only configuration any where that i can dowm load or get a copy of ??
I know theres not much to it ??

I spoke to the man who is going to make these boards, the voltage side is not going to be a problem and will be a more reliable indication of volts condition of the batt than the POD is at present.
Current side is going to need a bit more work, i am going to take one of my C5s to him so he take the measurements with the motor on load and without etc ...
Was wondering if we could get by with out the current indication ? But he will continue with it and hopefully have a prototype soon ..

Hi I have started to have a play and have ordered a dc current (Hall effect) transducer. This will work on 24v dc circuit and upto 80A and will give an output of either 0-5vdc or 0-10vdc. This in turn will then be sent to the pod left hand side and can be used to a circuit to use resistors to the 7 LEDS. This will give a true instantanious current drain / usage. That the theory anyway.

Hi all, some photos of the restoration.
Chassis, hoop & forks - sandblasted, 2 coats of undercoat, 2 coats of paint, 2 coats of lacquer.
New fan to keep the motor cool.
New 18mm drive belt.
New Uni 8 controller.
New throttle and modified handlebars to suit.

Being a biker I always fit the throttle on the right hand side, it's more natural :) Plus it keeps the rotation correct.
The old c5alive 24v kit had the throttle on the left but this meant turning it the "wrong" way.

Hi all,
I have been having a play with monitoring the dc current. As previously advised I have bought a dc current transducer that gives out a dc voltage 0-10vdc in respect to 0-50A.
With a motor just connected with no resistance to its gear I get 1.7vdc from the transducer but but rapping the cable round its core twice it gives 3.2vdc. I tried using a rag to increase the resistance (simulating strain on the motor) which gave an increase in voltage to 4.7vdc from the transducer. If the motor runs a a max of 29A then I should be able to us a simple resister dropping circuit to light the leds on the POD.
I have however melted my gear so need a new one if any one has one for sale or if Chas can sell me a metal converted on.......

This sort of damage is why I haven't gone down the route of 24v, but when Karl's Dragon gearbox is ready and you can save your old gearbox from distruction then I would be more tempted, good luck in getting it sorted.

The damage on the gear is not from the conversion it was me holding a cloth whilst testing to see what current (voltage change) to act as resistance. The heat from the cloth melted the plastic gear...... Sorry for any confusion........

If you come up with circit you need a PCB made for, my mate can do fantastic PCBs.
Maybe combine his efforts for the voltage and yours for current into one board 8)

Had the motor connected to two batteries to give 24v and whilst it was rotating (6000'ish rpm) grabed the gear with a tea towel to induce some resistance (i.e. strain on the motor / gearbox). This must of cause heat and friction that melted the gear and also the tea towel has holes in it.

In regard to brakes, I am using standard at the moment. In regard to yours sticking, check that you have not lost the little cir-clip that holds the pin in position. I had a similar issue once. Send a photo of your assemble we may be able to advise from the photo.

Hi Radiomarty,
I have the 24v 5 LED display from 4QD. It is using a number of BC556B amplifier transistors and 2.2k resistors with volt steps of 0.5v. By looking at the LM3914 we can drive up 10 LED but will do just the 7 LED as per the POD.

I have produced a 24v monitoring circuit diagram but have not had a chance to produce it or test it. I am very busy at work so it will be some time before I get a chance to look at it. I am looking at the same circuit (x2 LM3914's, with a few component changes) for my current part due to using a dc current transducer (0-10vdc output signal) into Vsig2
.
Diagram below shows the proposed 1st part of the circuit. (its been +20 years since my HND course).

Just a question, i have been looking at the qd controllers, whats the best one to get that would be suited to the c5 MOTOR RUNNING AT 24V ??
Recomendations anyone ???

Hi POD11, I have ordered the Uni8 24 with cover, the twist throttle, matching handle and 5 LED battery monitor (but only got it to see what it was like) - £130. I understand Chas used the same on his.

Test PCB is being made as i speak using the circuit lancelot put on here, (with a few modifications).
Looks like that side of things is nearly complete, my mate is looking using the LED strips from the OLD pod as they have the bezel around them.
He is still working on the "current" part of the display, but has suggested a use for the LED strip on the left, maybe using the Yellows at each end for the indicators, and using the other leds for indications for the fan running (if switched) any other suggestions for the use of these leds ?
Will get some pics of the prototype when i next pop round to see him.
He has asked how many people might want these ?? No price as yet, but will get some sort of idea once the final board is completed.
They will come ready built with or with out LEDs (depending if you want to fit your own or supply the old ones from your POD or even fit these yourself) a bit of soldering

I am hoping to pick up the prototype later this week, at the moment the board that he has made does volts only on the right hand side, the left side will be wired with leads to the LEDS to be connected to what ever the user wants to use them for, Indicators etc.
He has bascily used your circuit, and changed some of the component values etc.
I have given him an old POD board to use the LED strips from, as soon as i get my hands on it i will post some pics etc on here..

Looks good, by the possible spare area on the current side look like I could do the similar circuit as mentioned. If I do a circuit could your guy do a test board (including or excluding componets) and how much.
As a note the large capacitor can be reduced in size as the regulator is right next to the rest of the circuit. I had in mind that like the control box (original) the voltages there and then is sent via the 10 core red wires incuring noise.

This board as it is will only work with 24 volts, its not a replacement for the POD just makes use of the POD casing to give an indication of the volts left in the battery.
Future developement is really dependent on how many people would want it, obviously the man who has done the PCB design has other things to do and this takes up his time etc.
The price was discussed and the present PCB ready built and using the existing LED strips from the buyers old (non working) POD inc P+P IS going to be £40.00.
I am not sure if this is going to be to much for some people given its limited use.

I can put you in touch with the man if you want to disscus your requirements, he tends to make and build the projects and sells them as tested and ready to go.
As you say it could be built in another box and make use of more room, and then running a cable up to the pod for indications only.
I will post some more pics of it connected to 24volts and the indications shown.

POD11, I am now looking at finishing my 24v conversion as been busy with kids football for 2 years but will be concentrating get this sorted.
are you still in contact with the guy that used my circuit and built your board as want to get the other side working for current monitoring and buzzer.

I have modified the circuit a little but now need the circuit to be CADed up but i am waiting to get someone to do it.
