Running my diesel car on veggie oil !
« on: 12, August, 2010 - 20:33:49 »
I thought I'd experiment with running my diesel Estima on new (unused) veggie oil. The TEOC site says as long as you dont exceed 50:50 mix (diesel : veggie) ,then all will be well and no need for any modifications. I'm using rapeseed oil at the moment so i'm only saving about 30p a litre.

Once I'm happy with this I might take a look at the waste veggie oil and bring down my running costs  even more ;)

I'm going to try this route too I think, especially if I can get friendly with a few local takeaways!

A friend of mine runs a LOT of "bio" diesel (lives quite close to you too chas!)

I have a friend who has been doing this for some time and it seem's to work well. I'll have a chat with him see if there are any 'tweeks'

You are compelled by law to declare over a certain annual consumtion( might be 2500 litres, not sure) of untaxed oil for road vehicle propulsion purposes and pay tax on it.

This is very true but the threshold is very high so that "normal" people can use it without any issue. I thgt it was closer to 4000 than 2500 though.

I know there is a legal requirement to pay tax if you process/manufacture in excess of a certain amount, but will need to check if there's any requirement to pay tax again for new stuff that you already paid vat on at a supermarket.

Does beg the question though, how on earth are the tax bods going to monitor and check  ?

When we buy fuel, the cheeky bleeders charge us VAT on top of FUEL DUTY!

A tax on tax.. disgraceful

locally to me there is a bio deisel garage, i used it for several months. recently the van was running rough so i thought injectors were needed,
. decided to run some normal through it and problem disappeared.

omho while running clean veggie oil @ 50/50 is likely fine, using ex chip/kebab shop oil you are going to need some decent filtering and a way of controlling the stink - well, if you like your neighbours being friendly
