Chaps - one of Matthew's other hobbies is building computers and has recently been looking into high spec gaming systems - Ive noticed alot of these use some quite advance air or water cooling systems for the cpu etc and I was just wondering if any of you computer geeks out there know anything about these - the plan is to try and get the best system installed into Goldfinger for motor cooling :) :)
My gaming pc with an nvidia GTX was cooled by a zalman, had problems so went back to coolmaster with thermaltake case ,,,,, overclocked and great for my big kid ( thats me ) playing.
anyway for cooling a motor in c5 they dont hold enough in the reservoir to cool quick enough, the metal gearbox I have on my earlier c5 was cooled down by brake disc cooling fan, they are used on US nascar vehicles and you can get them in 12 + 24 volt motors, they push over 100cfm at about 4amps.
( just made amendment in card type, quadro in office pc )

I have just checked my fan on 24 volt, its 175 cfm . ( the little 3" farty pc fans most use on here are only 25/28 cfm ) The problem with the water cooled is that the reservoir has to be air cooled anyway, on a pc there is a fan at the base. If you have it on a c5 you would need to locate it at the front or provide a good air cool source . Already looked at this a few years ago when I stripped out my pc, you will find it does not function as you cannot get the water to cool the inside of motor as you can with air, the commutator is the highest heat friction source.
Also air cooling does very little if not nothing to cool the controller, I assume you are using the UNI 8 ? These are heatsink cooled and there is no passive cool function on these at all. No point cooling the plastic case if its cooking inside as plastic base. The best method is to use a ducted alloy heatsink like from an amplifier ( pin type can dissipate 20% more ) , Newtons law of cooling proves this. The best and most simplest I have seen on this site is Chas's controller mounted on an alloy base.

If you do use the heatsink as described above then remember to use thermal conductivity paste ( like from a pc processor ), will prevent any hot spots blowing between plates. you can get a 3gm thumb from a pc shop for a quid.

Hi there regarding the UNI 8 on my Batmobile C5 as you can see it's on a aluminum plate and a small fan blowing on it and after a long run the UNI 8 is only warm also the motor is the same temperature I don't think the fan is doing anything just using battery power
I am using this fan which has a good airflow for my 24v conversion blowing across the motor.
