I've followed the instructions shown in http://c5alive.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,1217.msg9622.html#msg9622 (http://c5alive.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,1217.msg9622.html#msg9622) with no success, the gearbox will just not move. Trying to twist the case to free it up is useless as it's keyed
I'm a bit worried in-case I shatter the case, it's a brown one (no brown fingers). After reading about the brown finger problem I'm wondering if the brown casing are from the same material.
Can anyone suggest how I can remove this gearbox?
As long as all the 'tabs' are open, the gearbox casing should be free. Do try and give it a good tug - mine rarely comes off lightly and does often need some gentle persuasion.
ETA: My old casing was white and actually was the one which seemed to have been made from a softer material compared to my new brown one.

thanks for your post, BUT.
I've checked all the tabs and all are clear.
I have, as you termed it, given it a good tug, a few dammed good tugs, but it wouldn't budge. I now have some nasty teeth marks around the rim and I'm now at the point that I may tear or rip off a section of the rim.
Well in that case you'll have to wait for someone a little more experienced to come along, mine's always come off with some gentle persuasion.
The only other thing I can think of is are you pulling it straight towards and not at an angle?

I suspect you may have misunderstood my last post, it must be pulled in a straight line and not at an angle. I have quoted below what Karl's said about it on the thread in your link.

No I was pulling in a straight line, pulling from one side then the other.

That's confused me now :-\
But if you were pulling in a straight line then you were doing it correctly and it should have come off. Will have to wait for one of the more experienced members to tell you why yours may be stuck.
Hi there one of the way's I use to get the gearbox off is to open the fingers gently (If you had the brittal one's then they would have broke of already regarding the colour it is not brown it's a kind of purple ish )..as the fingers are open get a screw driver and prise the gearbox using the two bolts as a fulcrum one side at a time but be carfull ...If that does not work .Just give me a ring and I will run you through it ..bye Chas

there is no gap between the gearbox and the 'finger assembly' to insert a screwdriver, the gearbox has not moved a fraction of a mm.
I did read somewhere about greasing the gearbox from the rear, is it possible to remove the armature from the 'finger assembly'?
Yes you are right but you have to make a gap by easing the gearbox up with the screw drivers ....Beaing carfull not to damage it ...I will put some photos on later ...Bye Chas

Lovely piece of workmanship there Chas, and not beyond my capability to reproduce. But, for only three motors and long service intervals, I think it would be over doing it somewhat on my part.
I'll just have to make up a couple of grip blocks and try pulling with the vice.
I always spray WD40 into the join between the gearbox casing and the fingers
Several strong tugs, rather than a single long pull, always work better as well (cant believe how pervy that sounds :o ;D)
Well I managed to remove the bl...y thing at last, ::) it's the most nerve wracking job I've had in many years. In the end I had to strip the unit down and then use the vice together with a couple of grip blocks. I still had to use a hammer and wooden block, with each blow 'ping' and a nail would fly out. This happened so often it drove me up the wall across the ceiling and down the other side, :o :o so in the end I removed the nails and made some plastic wedges, and this worked, but it still took a lot of hammering and rotating the unit before the gearbox came out.
The cause of the problem was at some time or other a load of very sticky gunge had been poured over part of the motor and most of the gearbox, I had a hard job to clean this off when I removed the motor and didn't think about it anymore. This gunge had penetrated into the gap between the gearbox and the finger assembly, I assume with time it had started to harden and make a very efficient seal. :-\
Anyway the gearbox is now clean, thank goodness, and awaiting greasing and reassembly.
