Hi Chas,
i am about to start a restoration of my own and i am wandering what you are using to spray the frame?
i was thinking about a powder-coat but the price exceeds my budget. the next option would be zinc spray or ....
who knows what is best ?

I use my C5 everyday and have re-sprayed the chassis with just normal off the shelf paint and it's holding up fine - even though the C5 often gets wet.
Most people get the chassis sand blasted or wire brushed. Then 2 coats of car spray undercoat, 2 coats of car spay gloss and then 1 or 2 coats of car spay laquer.

I find it interesting you think that because I used to think the same! I've restored about 30 bicycles and the last 10 I had powder coated.
I called a couple of local places, and to get the frame and forks blasted and powder coated black cost me £60 the first time on the assurance that it was a cheap price. The next couple of bikes were the same, but then one day I read about a powder coat chrome effect, my regular company couldn't do it so I ended up ringing about 15 firms. I found one about 30 miles away, and when I asked the cost of doing a bike frame black they said "Oh, £15?"...
I've used them ever since with great results! My point is with powder coating, don't call two companies and assume you know what it costs... it's as open to price change as anything else is.
Powder coating' s great, but there are three important points to keep in mind...
1 - Think carefully about the finish. While not as important as a bike frame as it's hidden, gloss comes up a LOT shinier than paint, satin is like regular gloss, and even matt has a shine to it. One of the biggest mistakes I made was doing a 1940's bike in gloss thinking it would look New, because even though it does, it looks 'too' new, and nowhere near authentic.
2 - It's not a rust proofed. None of my collection are kept outside so it doesn't really affect my collection, but make sure you pay the extra for a primer for a bit of added protection. That extra £5 will make it last a LOT longer.
3 - Powder coating' s stronger than you can imagine, and once on is seriously hard to remove. Make sure you get it the right colour/finish first time because a second chance will open up a whole new set of problems ::)

15 pounds is not bad, is that including sandblasting ?
i ve got 2 prices 220 and 250 euro and that is with blasting
Yes, complete with primer! I don't know the prices in Europe, but it really is worth calling as many companies as you can because there will always be a cheap one!
I've yet to have any c5 chassis powder coated but looking at the superb job done on electricDaves MGF sub frames I'm going to experiment and have the next one done. Thanks for the heads up on rust proofing !
All the refurbed c5's I've done to date have had a similar treatment as mentioned by Lance. Shotblasted first, then cleaned, then several coats of primer followed by several top coats and finally a couple of coats of laquer. The paint I'm happiest with for use on the c5 chassis is the rattle can stuff for spraying steel wheels silver on cars. It is sold as being chip resistant and if you bulk buy it works out quite cheap per can. The chassis do tend to come up quite nice after this process 8)
When I at chance I'll add a couple of photos of things. One shows how good powder coating can be, the other how bad!
The 1940 bike I've got looks incredible, shining black paint, glimmering chrome, but a bit too 'bee's, although it does show the quality that can be achieved. The other is an old helmet that was done in satin powder coat. It looks terrible because it's far too shiny and shows every little bit of pitting in the metal. That incidentally is another thing, if it's not a smooth surface you can't fill and sand like you can with paint!
But for a chassis it would be perfect... finish doesn't really matter as it's hidden, and it's a much, much harder finish meaning less scratches and very little maintenance to keep it looking immaculate! Pros and cons ::)

But it takes a lot longer this time of the year ...
Just uploaded the C5 for sale on Ebay
Chas
Like too buy it but 2 draw backs
1. My dad won't let me
2. You are too far away
Your C5 is in better condition than the other C5 on eBay and you have started bidding at 99p whilst he has at £550 :-\ :-\
Hi Chas
Isn't that a bit risky putting it on without a reserve or start price?
It must stand you at a few pounds with the new tyres etc.
Simon
Thanks it has cost a bit will see how it goes plenty of time yet
Chas
I see the bids are coming in already.
Good luck
£46 all ready :o
