Title: Sticky rear brake
Post by: kamilb1998 on 22, March, 2013 - 17:27:00
For a few weeks now, my rear brake seems to be sticking slightly.

After application of the rear brake it doesn't completely go back into the 'off' position and it therefore squeaks and binds. I can pull on the lever that the cable attaches to at the brake drum end and it will fully return to the 'off' position but after being applied again it won't fully go back into the 'off' position again.

Must be suffering from a lack of use  ;)

Anyone experienced this previously?

Hi there have a look at the cam inside it may need a little grease . And check the spring ...Also take a close look at the shoes Some times the alloy has a crack in it ...Also try and take up a little slack in the cable by the adjuster at the back ..You may need to change the shoes .

Sticky cables maybe? Try removing the inner cable and regreasing it :)

Yes it could be the cable ...But if you want to remove the inner cable just disconect it from the back brake caliper and pull the inner out steady leaving the outer in place ... Then you should be able to rethread the new inner cable back in place .

I replaced the cable a few months ago - and I seem to recall this issue showing it's first signs before the cable change so pretty sure it isn't that.

The shoes, cam & spring were all changed in January 2012 for new old stock items, but I will look over them tomorrow & grease as necessary to see if it solves the issue.

I have exactly the same problem...  :(
Especially when I am steering to the right it squeaks... Did also put new cable with much greese on it...
Also sanded the braking shoes...

Couldn't be bothered to look at it last weekend, will try and have a look at it over the Easter holidays.

Took it apart after cleaning the new C5 today. It seems the 'cam' was very tight in the housing, I removed it, squirted some grease into the housing and the brakes now work as they should  ;D

Hello kamilb1998,
What do you mean by the "cam". i dont know that word (I am from Holland).
Can you please explain to me what you did to prevent the squeek?
Thanks, Bart.

Below is a picture of what I mean by the brake cam.

I found this to be very stiff inside its housing, I took it out, greased it and put it back in. It was then very 'free' and turned without much effort.
