seem someone once had a great idea then let it slip away having done it seems the most part of the work needed.
could be fun to sort it out properly then give it a go up the test hill at brooklands the mini moto engines do seem to give a decent amount of power for size.
but i'd let challenger go up in front 1st - just in case it needed towing ::)

Check out my petrol c5 videos on youtube under ID JORDAN8ISH BYE CHAS
I like the idea of a petrol powered C5 for a bit of fun, but would prefer more power with an electric motor. Fast and green ! :D
Retro Andy
Petrol power goes against the very core of the C5 idea. The future lies in a better gearbox and 24v. The C5 should remain an iconic electric vehicle, in my opinionated idea ! ;D
Might be worth a gamble if the price doesn't go much higher, but knowing ebay, it'll probably shoot up in the last 10 minutes :D
Daz
reckon it would be great fun, problem with it unless you have access to private land where can you ride it?
ok the 24 volt is a tad iligal, but you would be a bit unlucky to get knicked for using one unless acting the goat on it.
this C5 will make a fair old racket and a joy for the local beat copper to snap up and do you on.
so not something to buy in haste me thinks
I'm interested in this one!!!
I was plannign on getting it back to original C5 standard it has everything in place it jsut needs all of the electircs.
Any ideas where I can get this lot from guys?
To be honest if your wanting to put it back to stock, you would be better off buying a different one.
Umpa is right, you should consider the cost of all the missing components and weigh it up against the cost of buying one that needs nothing doing to it.
Some parts are getting rare now - which means prices are going up.
Well if anyone is interested I'v started building another petrol engine c5 that will do 30 mph + and will have the braking system to stop it . so keep an eye on this site . C5 s can also be used off road as well as on the road ..Chas
Had a little bid when it got relisted, but it went over my price.
Will keep an eye out for yours Chas when it appears :)
Daz
Chas - you're always welcome to advertise the c5 for sale on here when its ready.
Unlike Ebay, there's no fees attached with c5alive 8)
Hi there thanks Karl I think I will probably take you up on that .But at the moment I 'v left the petrol
C5 on the back boiler and started building a 24volt / 900watt throttle controlled chain drive C5 Its just about ready for testing on the road but will wait till next week and if it's ok will complete and fit the lights/ horn /trims a voltage monitor and a speed meter also connect the fan up and give it a good clean .Also fitted a set of cables to connect two battery's together and run the c5 with foolproof connecting (will not work if you connect the leads the wrong way round and do no harm (relay and diode fitted with switch).

It's looking good !
a very interesting project, that motor looks as though it was just made for the job, as seems to fit in the motor bracket a treat.
imo brilliant part of being in the C5 scene is you have the basics design then what i find fascinating is how people approach and arrive at the variety of different ways to improve on it.
the joy of this C5 hobby is it don't have to cost a fortune or a lot of space to indulge in trying out your idea's, as they can be as small or as intricate as you care to make them :).

Hi guys
I put in a bid for £60, But lost it,
still looking for my first c5,
James
Keep looking Bud - one will turn up - probably best with a more original one anyway - good luck.
Radiomarty (Adam Ant)
Chas - if its likely to be ready in time, why not bring your 24v c5 to the AER event at Santa Pod ? You'll need to get your skates on and register though :)
Hi there Karl I would like to but need to do some testing on it yet (the 24 volt) and if all is ok will have to complete the wiring for the lights /horn voltmeter + speedometer (just got back from holiday ) so I'm a bit behind ,but will try my best to get there ..
HI THERE JUST AN UPDATE ON THE C5 24 VOLT I,V JUST REWIRED IT WITH THICKER AND MORE FLEXABLE WIRE ALSO MOVED THE RELAY AND TESTED IT AND AT THE MOMENT ALL SEEMS OK BUT I WILL HAVE TO GET IT OUT SIDE AND GIVE IT A GOOD RUN BEFORE COMPLETING THE REBUILD
(http://i992.photobucket.com/albums/af46/jordan8_2009/PICT0343.jpg)
What motor and controller are you using for this, its looks just the job !
John
Hi there John the controller is a Uni-8 24 volt and a Magura 4QD Twist grip throttle .The motor is a 24 volt 900 watt dc motor .The reason why the controller has no cover is that I was adjusting the gain for full control and have not yet put it back I need to test everything on the road before I can complete the rebuild if it`s not up to scratch I will strip it down and redesign it or just convert it to a petrol engine ..
it is such a neat solution i bet i'm asking this question for many ;D,
where was that motor sourced from, is there a name/model number on it?
looks ideal for replacing the original C5 motor.

nice work chas! Do you realise what you have fitted is basicaly c5 alives old 24 volt conversion kit! Is the motor from tnc scooters in the usa? Whats it like without a gear box? It would go guite well with a sturmey archer inbetween the motor and drive wheel.
Hi there you are right the kit was from c5 alive quite some time ago when it was run by Mark .
Regarding using it as a direct replacement well it is smaller than the original C5 Motor and it took quite a lot of work to get it secure and clamped down in the cradle and it's still not quiet finished yet but if the motor is powerful enough I will make it more secure or even move it to the middle of the Axel .Also it does not need a Sturmy archer gearbox if you are using a speed controller It is a scooter motor imported from USA .The speed of the motor is 2300 rpm then it's geared down by the chain drive and sprockets ....
Looks like a lot of hard work has gone into that , not to mention a lot of thought.
Should go quite well too :)
Just to let you know that I've just had a test run and it runs very good not sure how fast but it also goes up hills as if they where not there Now I can Finnish the build connect the fan up to cool the motor and the controller allthough the controller has a large heatsink it wasn't even warm ..
I now need to connect a voltmeter / ampmeter / speedometer / lights / and a thermal cut out for the power just in case the motor overheats
Will post photos asap
Very impressed Chas - you certainly are a dab hand with the mod's.
Just to update my project (24 volt C5 )
Now that I've been on a couple of runs without any problems I have completed some of the wiring (lights/horn/volt/amp meter .All there is to do now is to fit the speedometer + a shunt for the ampmeter .And a new set of schwalbe tyres and a good clean up..

Thanks Karl ...Iv just fitted a new set of tyres + the speedometer and also connected the shunt for the ampmeter ..All seems to be ok but must test everthing on a decent run

I like those meters, where did you get them, the surround looks the part !
This has given me ideas for one of mine once the weather improves, i shall look at something similar.
John
Looking really good Chas. Top job (again)
The finished article is superb mate - are you giving it a run out at Santa Pod ?
That looks excellent Chas. Well done on another refurb ;D
Daz
Looks the business, really nice job, if only I could have more C5's to play with :'( Although I have got one more C5's than most people ;D
Retro Andy
this is such a good conversion, i hopeyoumake it available in a kit or from plans only.
all the measuring and chin scratching is done, so would be great option to let others do the same, and you make some money for your very hard innovative work too.
very well done either way

alan
Hi there Alan thanks for the comments ..Regarding kit form maybe but that will be later on I do have 1 more 900 watt motor left but I think I will fit it in the middle of the back Axel its a lot easier . Iv`e got to catch up on the decorating (I hate it but someone has to do it ).There is always something in the way of my C5 hobby's....
i did see a physically similar motor on ebay, but it was rated 24v @ 250 watts, guessed it was not what you had used.
in my case i have a standard C5, 'Behemoth' which has the original C5Alive 24v upgrade, obviously the pod is not used and the old sinclair controller was removed.
while it all sems ok to me, no real idea what punishment it has had, so i'm expecting likely as it is the original motor and gearbox might not last over long, me being the proactive type i'm just looking ahead for alternatives in the future.
like you, i'm time poor and have loads of ideas buzzing around my head to try out - and a brand new as yet unused MIG welder to play with, and just begging to be plugged in ;D
so your design in either format is very attractive :D. as i Karl's new metal gearbox when it comes on line, will be interesting to see which one is the quicker or more robust - having seen the prototype at Brooklands hard call to make a guess on, but either will improve the C5's reliability.

Cool 8)
So have you been out chasing Mopeds yet Chas ... or do you leave them behind ;D
Daz
Need to buy some new leisure battery`s first ..
Leisure batteries might be a tad heavy, especially as you need two.
Voodoo runs on two Type 063 car batteries which are a bit lighter and still give enough oomph ;)
Hi Karl Is Voodoo running on 24 volts if so how far can you go , lets say on an average run

With the power setting low, and basically treating it like a 12v , I have managed all the meetings so far on a single set of batteries.
The runs are usually between 10-12miles.
Have you managed to take this out on a proper run yet Chas ? If so, how did it go ?

Just for a bit of clarity here Chas - Karl has been known to wind the throttle back on a few occasions - lol
I was not very pleased with the last c5 with the 900 watt motor only got 19 miles an hour out of it and it got very hot despite the fan on all the time .
So I will be taking the motor out and replacing with the metal gearbox motor and test it out on 24 volts ..
