Motor recommision

If a motor/gearbox has not been used for a long time, in excess of 15 years, what should you do before using?

Surely the electric motor will either work or it wont. The gearbox is often talked about on there forum with regard to stripping and greasing.  Is this required as I have no reason to believe the grease inside is not doing it's job.  Although grease goes hard over time I would have thought the grease peoperties are still there and they plastic cogs being I guess nylon but be (to a point) self lubricating....  If you do need to strip the gearbox and grease it can you tell me what failure could occur?
Leading on from that how easy/difficult is it to strip and grease the gearbox? :D
Cheers, Giles

I'd suggest it's always a good thing to service the motor and gearbox - fresh grease can never be a bad thing  ;) Cleaning the armature will help the brushes make good contact and making sure the brushes are still spring loaded also helps.

Check out the forum guide;

...you'll find the link to the handbook which will prove very useful.

There are also topics on this forum covering motor and gearbox rebuilds;

Is there a tried and tested way of removing the old brushs ready for fitting a replacement set.

I have not yet removed the dud ones in a motor i have, i did have a quick look at them, but could not see how they come out, apart from getting a pair of pliers and pulling them out.

Oddly enough I've never had to replace any, but I do remember c5martin saying that removing them damaged the plastic holders...so I guess a bit of brute force and ignorance is called for  :-\.

If you trash anything you shouldn't, let me know. I have a few spare motor parts available  ;)
